ECRL completes boring of 16km Genting Tunnel on schedule
BENTONG: The East Coast Rail Line (ECRL) project has reached a major milestone with the successful completion of tunnelling works for the 16.39 kilometre Genting Tunnel on schedule. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the tunnel, which cuts through the Titiwangsa Range, was among the most challenging engineering feats of the 41 tunnels along the ECRL route. "Tunnelling work took more than two years to complete," he said at a press conference after the Genting ECRL Tunnel breakthrough ceremony here today. Loke said a hybrid method involving the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM), along with drilling and explosives, was employed for the excavation. He also said the Transport Ministry was reviewing proposals to extend the ECRL line beyond its current terminus in Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang in Kelantan, in a bid to improve connectivity between Malaysia and Thailand. Meanwhile, Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak described the on schedule completion of the Genting Tunnel as a significant achievement. "This is because the ECRL project team had to overcome difficult geological conditions while boring through the mountainous Titiwangsa Range," he said. With tunnelling works now completed, the project moves into its next phase involving track installation, electrical systems, signalling, communications, and the fitting out of station interiors. The ECRL is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with passenger services scheduled to begin in phases from January 2027.

Govt adds 10,000 more MyLesen spots for poor students to get free B2 licence
SEREMBAN: An additional 10,000 secondary school students from poor families will be able to apply for the free motorcycle licence under the government's MyLesen B2 Programme this year, says Anthony Loke Siew Fook. He said the Transport Ministry has agreed to add to the 15,000 spots initially approved for this year due to the overwhelming response. "Under Budget 2025, the government had agreed to bear the cost to provide free Class B2 motorcycle licences for 15,000 Form Four and Five students from B40 families. "However, in the first six months of this year, we received 15,191 applications and 14,581 students, or 97% from the allocated quota, have already participated in the programme," he told reporters after handing over the B2 license to students here on Thursday (July 10). He said the additional 10,000 spots will cost the ministry another RM3.5mil. It costs RM350 for each participant to sit for tests and to obtain a valid license. The cost, he said, will be borne by the ministry through its various initiatives. Loke, who is also Seremban MP, said of the 10,000 additional spots, 1,000 will be reserved for Negri Sembilan as the ministry had received an overwhelming response from applicants here. Separately, Loke also advised school authorities to check if students who rode motorcycles had a valid license. "We need to get schools to help provide us with the information, as we want to help students from B40 families to obtain a license. "Any student who rides into the school compound must be asked to provide such details," he said. Loke reiterated that this was not to penalise the students but to help the Road Transport Department identify and license them. Asked if the ministry would revoke the licences of those who benefited from the programme but participated in illegal racing or committed other traffic violations, Loke said he supported the move. "We are giving them free licences because our intention is to help them. "If they are involved in other undesirable activities on the road, then we will revoke the licence," he said, adding that this was important as they would not only be endangering their lives but the safety of other road users as well.

[UPDATED] Immediate licence suspension for commercial drivers in accidents
KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has decided to immediately suspend the vocational licence of commercial vehicle drivers involved in road accidents, pending police investigations. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said that if drivers were found guilty or issued a notice for violating any provision under the Road Transport Act 1987, their vocational licences would be revoked in accordance with Section 56(4)(b) of the same Act. "As soon as an accident occurs and as soon as we receive a preliminary report from the police involving a bus or lorry driver, we will immediately suspend that driver's vocational licence. "Later, if police investigations find that the driver is not at fault, we will rescind the suspension. "However, if the driver is found to be at fault, we will take further action in accordance with the law, such as cancelling the driver's license, revoking permits and so on," he said after the MyLesen B2 licence presentation ceremony here today. Vocational licences comprised the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence for passenger vehicles and Goods Driving Licence (GDL) for goods vehicles. Aedy said suspension of vocational licences had begun, starting with the lorry driver involved in a fatal accident involving nine members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) on May 13. "As of today, we have suspended five," he said, adding that this included the bus driver involved in the accident that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. To ensure that commercial vehicle drivers remained competent, Aedy said the RTD would require all drivers involved in accidents, even if not guilty, to pass a refresher course before their vocational licence could be reactivated or removed from the suspension list. "All drivers will also be subject to a fee to cover the cost of the training programme." He said the refresher course will cover re-education on driving competency, including road regulations, safe driving practices, mindset change and safe vehicle handling. "RTD will also set the duration of the programme, which must be successfully completed by the individual involved," he said, adding that further details on the programme will be announced in the near future. Aedy said the move was part of improvement efforts aimed at ensuring that all commercial vehicle drivers complied with road regulations, besides driving responsibly and safely on public roads. "Previously, such measures were not implemented. However, we are now taking a more decisive approach. "I would like to remind all operators, including bus and lorry companies, as well as those involved in goods and public transport services, to ensure that their drivers adhere to all regulations and responsibilities entrusted to them." Meanwhile, regarding the enforcement of seatbelt use among bus drivers and passengers, Aedy said up to yesterday, a total of 510 summonses had been issued. Of that total, 80 summonses were issued to drivers, 396 to bus attendants and passengers, 26 to backseat passengers, and eight to bus companies for not installing seat belts. Starting July 1, it became mandatory for all drivers and passengers of express and tour buses, manufactured after January 2020, to wear seat belts. For buses built before 2020, operators would be given a grace period to install seat belts.
