Since then, an intense manhunt has been underway in mountainous central Montana, as authorities desperately try to apprehend Brown, who they say is armed and dangerous.
What precipitated the shooting remains unknown.
On Friday evening, authorities released a photo of a shirtless Brown wearing a black shirt, climbing down what appears to be concrete steps. They also announced that they had located a white Ford F-150 truck belonging to Brown, which they say he used to flee the scene of the shooting.
A SWAT team raided his home, but did not locate him.
In a Sunday night update, authorities said the search for Brown included air and ground resources.
Brown was an armor crewman in the Army from January 2001 to May 2005 and served in the National Guard from April 2006 to March 2008, Army Public Affairs confirmed to Fox News Digital. He deployed to Iraq from February 2004 to March 2005 and left the service with the rank of sergeant.
He also served in the Montana National Guard from April 2006 to March 2009.

Hunt enters day 5 for Army soldier accused in Montana bar killings
The manhunt for an ex-U.S. Army soldier accused of killing a bartender and three patrons at a rural Montana bar last week entered day five on Tuesday, Aug. 5, and officials have upped an initial reward to $10,000 for information leading to his capture. Law enforcement said quadruple murder suspect Michael Paul Brown, 45, walked into The Owl Bar in the small city of Anaconda on Aug. 1 and unleashed a barrage of bullets on the victims, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said. The bar in Deer Lodge County is just over a 100-mile drive west of Bozeman, about 100 miles southeast of Missoula. Director of External Affairs Emilee Cantrell for Knudsen's office said Brown, considered armed and dangerous by police, remained at large across multiple jurisdictions, including the FBI on his trail. Cantrell told USA TODAY that Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte was slated to hold an updated press conference sometime later on Tuesday. About 10:30 a.m. local time, the suspect walked into the bar and opened fire on the victims, officials said during a news conference on Aug. 3. Michael Paul Brown, 45, is suspected of opening fire on Friday morning at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, a city of about 9,000 people in southwestern Montana, authorities said. There has not been a confirmed sighting of Brown since Friday, authorities said. Thirty-eight local, state and federal agencies are involved in the search, Anaconda Deer Lodge County Attorney Morgan Smith said. Officers are "unrelenting in their pursuit, working around the clock" to find him, Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte stressed at a news conference on Tuesday. "Rest assured, our brave men and women of law enforcement aren't giving up." The governor said he signed an executive order to use financial resources from the state emergency respond fund to help support law enforcement, including overtime. "This action today will ensure additional financial resources are available as we continue to track down this criminal," Gianforte said. The governor opened Tuesday's news conference with a moment of silence for the four victims, identified as bartender Nancy Loretta Kelly, 64, and patrons Daniel Edwin Bailey, 59; David Allen Leach, 70; and Tony Wayne Palm, 74. Brown lived next door to the bar and investigators believe he was familiar with most of the victims, authorities said.
