Parents seen bringing young children to opposition rally at Dataran Merdeka

KUALA LUMPUR: Several parents were seen bringing their young children to the opposition rally at Dataran Merdeka today. Although the rally was scheduled to begin later in the afternoon, children accompanied by their parents were already present as early as 10.30am. A single mother who declined to be named said she came all the way from Muar, Johor, to support the cause. "I lost my husband in a hit-and-run accident last year and have been receiving RM1,100 from his pension since. "I have two young children aged three and four, and my youngest is autistic," she said, adding that she was having trouble receiving aid from the current administration. She claimed that all requests for aid, be it from the Welfare Department or Zakat, had failed as they said she was receiving a pension. "How can I survive with two young children on such a low income? "I'm not asking for a handout. I just want help in getting my food business operating well so I can take care of my family," she said when met outside a restaurant along Jalan Tun Perak today. Meanwhile, when approached by NSTP reporters, one of the children said he was simply following his father, who was on duty as a member of Pas' volunteer corps, Jabatan Amal. "I don't know much. I'm just following my dad who's on duty here," the child said. Meanwhile, at Masjid Jamek, another rally participant who was seen with a small child claimed he was only there to shop for clothes. When asked if he was aware of the prohibition against bringing young children to the rally at Dataran Merdeka, the man said he planned to return home around noon as he had to go to work. "I won't be bringing my child to Dataran Merdeka later for the rally. I need to go home first because of work. I'll come back in the evening after I'm done," said the man, who lives in Gombak. Police anticipate a turnout of between 10,000 and 15,000 people at today's rally. Participants are set to gather at Masjid Negara, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru, and Kompleks Sogo – before converging at Dataran Merdeka. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the police would facilitate the assembly. A total of 16 roads will be closed for the rally, which is expected to end after 5.15pm.

Infrastructure work for five-season paddy planting programme begins ahead of schedule

ALOR SETAR — The main infrastructure development project under the five-season paddy planting programme over two years in the Muda area has commenced ahead of its scheduled start date of Aug 1. Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) chairman Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh said the project's progress is ahead of schedule, reflecting a strong commitment and seriousness in assisting farmers in the Muda area. The development project comprises two main components: the construction and maintenance of 15 Tertiary Irrigation System Blocks (Project 1), and the Pedu Dam Phase 1 Comprehensive Rehabilitation Project (Project 2), with a total allocation of RM1 billion. 'These 15 blocks will supply water to 560 hectares of paddy fields. According to the original timeline, the project was scheduled to begin on Aug 1, but the contractor began work earlier,' he said when asked about the project's progress. Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited to the major infrastructure development project under the five-season paddy cultivation programme in the Muda area, located at Batu 7, Kampung Kemboja, Ayer Hitam, near Jitra. He said the paddy cultivation programme would bring comprehensive reforms to the country's paddy and rice industry ecosystem, helping to reduce reliance on imports and enhance national rice self-sufficiency. He added that the Prime Minister's visit marked his second to the project site, aimed at reviewing the progress of agricultural infrastructure development in line with the government's efforts to strengthen the national food supply and boost local rice production. 'This project, which is currently underway, focuses on upgrading the irrigation and drainage systems, as well as enhancing the use of modern technology in the paddy cultivation sector. It not only supports intensified planting activities but also has the potential to boost productivity and increase the income of paddy farmers. 'With the implementation of five planting seasons in two years, the country is expected to reduce its reliance on imported rice and raise the self-sufficiency level (SSL) of this strategic commodity,' he said. Meanwhile, when asked about the proposed construction of guardrails and maintenance work along the Sungai Korok canal, Ismail said MADA and the Public Works Department (JKR) have held initial discussions on constructing guardrails at the location, as previously suggested by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. On July 8, Ahmad Zahid said that the government would consider proposals to build guardrails and install streetlights along the route near Sungai Korok, following the tragic incident on July 5, in which six family members died after their car skidded and plunged into the canal. — BERNAMA

HIKAM Calls On People To Defend Democracy, Support Development Agenda

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- The Himpunan Gerakan Islam Malaysia (HIKAM) has called on Muslims and the people to unite in defending the sovereignty of democracy, rejecting political uncertainty, and supporting the country's development agenda based on the principles of justice, unity and peace that form the foundation of Malaysia MADANI. In a statement today, the HIKAM secretariat said it takes seriously the latest political developments, which indicate attempts by certain quarters to topple the government through means other than legitimate elections. 'Efforts to destabilise the political landscape will only trigger a crisis of confidence, undermine the economy, and increase the people's suffering.
