Hamilton care home chef triumphs in national awards
A Hamilton chef has been named the best in Britain for the special menus he creates for residents at a local care home.
Robert Sorbie tasted success at the national final of the prestigious Great British care awards, where he was served up with the title of national chef of the year in recognition of his work at Abbeydale Court on Strathaven Road.
He impressed judges with his themed celebration menus and freshly-prepared meals, with his delighted colleagues saying: 'This award reflects the love and care he pours into every plate he serves.'
Robert, who has been head chef at Abbeydale Court for the past eight years, took the top award after qualifying for the UK final by winning the Scotland and North-East regional heat in November – and then went on to take the national crown at the overall finals in Birmingham, hosted by Vernon Kay.
He said: 'I was judged on various skills which included producing and presenting meals prepared for events throughout the year such as Burns night, Valentine's day, Easter, St Patrick's day, Halloween, St Andrew's day, Christmas and new year – themed nights give me great pleasure and satisfaction, and all meals are prepared and cooked with fresh produce.
'I was interviewed by a panel of professional judges and was fortunate be selected as regional winner and I was very excited to reach the national stage of the competition. Winning is a great achievement and filled me with a sense of pride and joy to bring the award back to Hamilton [and] the residents of Abbeydale Court.'
Robert first began his culinary career aged 16 as an apprentice baker, attending college part-time to earn his qualifications and within six years having progressed to become an assistant manager.
He then enrolled in evening courses at Glasgow College of food technology, gaining professional cookery qualifications including an HNC and HND on his way to becoming a chef, going on to become a pastry chef at Strathclyde University's former Jordanhill campus.
Robert worked his way up to sous chef and eventually to head chef, spending an impressive 21 years in the role before moving into his current role at the Hamilton care home where he is a popular member of staff and has been celebrated by colleagues, residents and families.
A spokesperson for Abbeydale Court said: 'Robert's win is a remarkable achievement for the entire Hamilton community. This prestigious national accolade recognises exceptional talent and dedication within the care sector [and he] competed against some of the best chefs in care settings across the UK, emerging as the national winner.
'Robert is renowned for his passion for food and commitment to improving the lives of elderly residents through creative, nutritious, and person-centred meals.
'His meals are about more than nourishment – they're about comfort, memory and community, and his approach goes far beyond the kitchen; he sees food as a tool to enhance wellbeing, bring joy, and uphold the dignity of those in care.'
Abbeydale's spokesperson added: 'His win shines a spotlight on the important role catering plays in social care and serves as an inspiration for chefs and care professionals nationwide.
'The team at Abbeydale Court, along with residents and families, are immensely proud of Robert's achievement – an inspiring example of excellence in care right at the heart of Hamilton.
Head chef Robert has worked at the 109-bed home since November 2016 and delights residents with not only a fresh, homemade daily menu, but also 'takes pride in preparing food for family occasions, birthday celebrations, and private dining experiences for residents and their loved ones'.
Judges described him as 'an asset to the care sector' as he impressed with his wide and varied menus, worthwhile mealtimes, healthy food choices, catering for special dietary requirements, hygiene and sustainability, as well as using local produce and linking in with residents' activities.
They praised his 'passion for culinary excellence and his dedication to bringing joy to residents' – and his award citation ahead of the final read: 'He is always looking ahead to the next internal event to ensure it's a memorable experience for both residents and their families, and adapts day-to-day menus freely to ensure everyone's nutritional needs are met.'

She jetted to Ibiza with husband Marvin to celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary with "old friends". Marvin posed with Myleene's ex at a dinner table, with the men flashing big smiles. The Saturdays singer, 36, also revealed her close friendship with former bodyguard Graham. Rochelle told her followers in the caption: "72 hours in sea, belly laughing, questionable dance moves and spicy margs that tasted better than our decisions, "Our annual non negotiable child free trip with old friends who remind you who you are. There's also an update on the Sarah Sugden surrogacy storyline as there's some baby news. It comes after Charity Dingle agreed to be a surrogate for her granddaughter. Elsewhere, there's a violent showdown, trouble for Vinny Dingle and drama for April Windsor. Let's kick things off with Ruby Miligan vs Manpreet Sharma. The pair clash over something the former has seen, and soon there's a confrontation and things escalate. Manpreet is embarrassed and determined t have it out with Ruby, leading to her hijacking a forklift at the depot and refusing to get off until Ruby speaks to her. Insults are hurled, but the mention of Ruby's daughter Steph leads to her snapping and attacking Manpreet. Eventually it leads to them both being arrested for ABH, locked up for the night. But can the pair resolve things or has a new village feud been born? Elsewhere, and another feud seems to be simmering on. John Sugden decides to exact his next revenge against Robert, after seeing him speak with his ex Aaron Dingle, John's husband, in the café. Seeing them together leaves him jealous, and he decides to sabotage Robert's relationship with nephew Harry. When Harry keeps drumming, no doubt encouraged by his scheming uncle John, Robert ends up losing his temper and he snaps at Harry. Just as John heads to the house he walks in on Robert shouting at the youngster, and he feigns concern. A terrified Harry clings to a smug John, with him getting exactly what he wanted and Robert left distraught. Wasting no time in telling Aaron about what happened no doubt trying to make things worse, John relishes in talking down about him to his husband. But will Aaron give him the reaction he craves? Also in the village, Mackenzie Boyd puts his thoughts aside and tells wife Charity she can try again with another embryo transfer for granddaughter Sarah after she began bleeding recently. Cain Dingle agrees to pay for it, admitting he has some secret funds. But how will wife Moira Dingle feel about this knowing their financial issues? Soon Charity learns she's pregnant, with Sarah thrilled, and she soon makes a big baby announcement in the Woolpack. Elsewhere, Vinny Dingle is still chatting to newcomer Mike as he continues to question his sexuality ahead of his wedding to Gabby Thomas. As their bond grows, Mike asks Vinny if he's gay but it's clear he's confused. Mike comforts Vinny who is grateful for the support, and later the pair agree to meet up again. When Gabby heads to an overnight spa trip, Vinny gets an urgent message from Mike who then shows up at his house. Revealing his partner has kicked him out, the pair talk and soon Mike hints at an attraction between them. Vinny denies it, but soon it seems there's more to the story when Mike turns on Vinny. It could well be that Mike is lying about who he is and his agenda. With Gabby heading home after thinking she's left her home behind, can she save her partner from Mike? There's more from the possible new romance for Belle Dingle and Kammy Hadiq. Nicola King persuades Belle to join some dating apps and when they come across Kammy's profile, Nicola swipes right. When Kammy learns it wasn't Belle's doing he masks his disappointment, and soon Cain is getting involved. He warms Kammy away from his sister, but a mortified Belle has a go at Cain for this while claiming she isn't interested. Lydia Dingle wonders if her sister-in-law is protesting a little too much though, so could Belle and Kammy give things a go? Finally next week, it's April's 16th birthday and things don't go as planned. April tells love interest Dylan that she wants to sleep with him and the pair head upstairs, only to be caught out by Mandy Dingle who sees them heading downstairs together. She wastes no time in telling April's father Marlon who is dismayed. New cafes in Sheung Wan and Central that you should try
The pint-sized No Title doesn't have much space for seats, so they're mainly a takeaway spot but they're pet-friendly for those who do want to sit in. The proprietors Wing and Man are a young couple from Guizhou who love nostalgic Hong Kong vibes, so their cafe is full of Easter egg references, such as a goldfish tank that's a nod to Wong Kar-wai's films, a milk cake inspired by the long staircase at the end of Gough Street, and a playlist of Cantopop classics. Their coffee blend is from the Chinese person who won the world's best pour-over coffee, and No Title is the only place in Hong Kong where you can savour this. The nutty blend carries hints of dark chocolate and buttery caramel, while the fruity option has white floral notes. There are plenty of options on their sizeable list of signatures and non-coffee sips that come with their own stories, such as the Tiny Goldfish, the Moulin Rouge, and the Opacarophile (it means someone who loves sunsets, fyi). If you're not quite sure what to choose, have a chat with the baristas who can pick something based on your current mood and what you're sensing in that moment, which is a really cute touch. Apart from homemade Lamington cake, No Title also offers Guizhou sticky rice, featuring lard and soy sauce mixed rice topped with pork crackling – an interesting pairing for coffee, to be sure!
