CM vows to continue efforts for a drug-free Punjab
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that for the better and bright future of the youth, we reiterate our commitment to a drug-free Punjab. The Punjab government is committed to carry out coordinated efforts to eradicate the menace of drugs across Punjab, she said, in her message on the 'International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.'
The CM said, 'The purpose of celebrating the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is to provide awareness and consciousness about drug abuse and its eradication from the society.'
She highlighted, 'We must pledge to create a safe environment for children free from the detrimental effects of drugs.'
She expressed her best wishes to all organizations and well aware citizens who are playing their due positive role in preventing drug abuse from the entire society. She emphasised that the drugs addicts are a great cause of concern for the entire society. She revealed that Anti-Narcotics Force is being reactivated and streamlined in Punjab so as to stamp out drug trafficking in the province. She vowed, 'Our firm resolve and determination to halt drug trafficking is unwavering at all costs.'
She urged the parents to fully support the efforts of the government and other relevant organizations for the prevention and eradication of drugs from the society. She exhorted the parents to keep a vigilant eye on the movements and habits of their children. She appealed to all the citizens to create awareness about the hazards of drugs and help those fighting against drug abuse.

WHO's stepped up higher tax drive may fuel illicit cigarette trade
LAHORE: As the World Health Organisation (WHO) intensified its global drive for greater tobacco taxes, there are growing concerns in Pakistan that the strategy may have the opposite impact. While intended to reduce smoking, the WHO's tax-centric approach is exacerbating an already rampant illicit cigarette trade, harming legitimate businesses, depleting public cash, and undermining regulatory integrity, experts of the industry said. Pakistan has become a case study of unforeseen effects. Despite heavy taxation in accordance with WHO recommendations, the market has seen a noticeable shift toward illicit cigarette consumption, they said. It may be added that legal tobacco companies now control less than half of the market, although accounting for roughly 98% of the industry's tax revenue. Untaxed and unregulated brands have invaded retail shelves across the country, often selling for less than the legal minimum price and without tax stamps. 'The illicit cigarette trade has now overtaken the legitimate sector, comprising 58% of the total market. Pakistan's annual consumption is around 82 billion sticks, yet only 34 billion are taxed, down sharply from 67 billion a decade ago,' said Asad Shah, Director at Pakistan Tobacco Company (PTC). Shah noted that tax revenue potential from the sector stands at around PKR 570 billion annually, but actual collection reached just PKR 292 billion in FY 2023–24 and only PKR 223 billion in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year. Although the WHO acknowledges illicit trade as a challenge, its policy guidance continues to emphasize taxation over enforcement. 'It's burdening compliant manufacturers while failing to curtail illicit and smuggled brands,' Shah added. Experts said that public health objectives must be pursued alongside strong enforcement mechanisms, not only tax increases. Experts warn obesity resulting in many diseases
KARACHI: Calling obesity a full-blown epidemic that has engulfed Pakistan in recent years, leading gastroenterologists and liver specialists have warned that excess body weight is now the leading cause of fatty liver disease, liver failure, and a major reason for the rising demand for liver transplants in the country. Urging people to adopt healthy eating habits and become physically active to avoid premature deaths and costly medical interventions, experts also warned that unhealthy lifestyles and obesity are contributing to an alarming rise in colorectal cancer cases among the relatively young population in Pakistan. They were speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the 7th Annual Conference of the Pakistan GI and Liver Disease Society (PGLDS) at a local hotel, which brought together local and international experts despite ongoing global unrest. Dr Lubna Kamani, President of PGLDS, stressed that obesity is now deeply intertwined with fatty liver disease and a wide range of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. 'While we now have new medications available for obesity and fatty liver, prevention is still the best strategy. We must eat less but healthy and stay physically active,' she said, while also pointing to a sharp increase in colorectal cancer among young adults, which she linked to unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles. 'We need to immediately launch a national colorectal screening program in Pakistan before this silent threat claims more lives.' Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Sindh Health Secretary Rehan Iqbal Baloch welcomed delegates from across the country and acknowledged the serious challenges patients face in accessing GI and liver care.
