
Urgent recall for fish sold in multiple states that could leave customers PARALYZED
Fish sold in multiple states has been recalled over fears it could contain paralyzing bacteria.
P. East Trading Corp is recalling cases of herring that were distributed across general stores in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
The company, based in Bronx, New York, sent out the product in 18lb wooden boxes marked with the container code 'Lot 1 PRC5073'.
The recall was sparked after food safety inspectors found the fish measured more than 5in in length and were uneviscerated, meaning they had not had their internal organs removed.
This heightens the risk of the meat carrying bacteria that causes botulism, a rare food-borne pathogen that attacks the body's nerves.
It is more commonly found in internal organs, especially the intestines, of fish.
Botulism can lead to full-body paralysis, including in muscles needed to breathe, making it fatal in rare cases.
Consumers are warned not to consume the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
No illnesses have been reported in relation to the recall.
The FDA urges any customers with symptoms such as muscle weakness, dizziness, slurred speech, abdominal swelling, constipation, difficulty breathing, and paralysis to seek medical attention immediately.
The authorities note that the fish - which is a product of Canada, caught in the cold waters of the Atlantic, and manufactured by Sea Star Seafood Ltd - might be difficult to spot, as it was likely repackaged at the retail locations it was distributed to.
Retail packaging and coding will vary based on location of purchase but the FDA has released a full list of the stores it was sent to, which totals more than 75.
No major retailers are included in the list, which is mainly made up of independent stores.
Symptoms of foodborne botulism usually appear within 12 to 36 hours of consuming contaminated food, but the range can be from a few hours to several days.
Botulism is caused by a toxin released by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which is normally found in spores in soil, marine areas, and on the surface of foods like fruits, vegetables, and seafood.
Fermented foods like wine and low-acid foods such as most vegetables, meats, and fish, are the most likely culprits.
The bacteria make spores, which act like protective coatings and are usually harmless.
However, warm and wet tight spaces lacking oxygen - such as metal cans or plastic jars - can cause the bacteria to release toxins that attack the central nervous system.
Botulism targets the body's nerves and can lead to paralysis, including in the muscles needed to breathe.
This makes five to 10 percent of cases fatal.
Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, blurry vision, slurred speech, difficulty breathing, and trouble moving the eyes.
The CDC estimates there are just 200 cases of botulism in the US every year, and 25 are from food, making it rare.
Other causes include infections and, rarely, injecting too much botulinum toxin used in Botox.
Consumers are urged to contact P. East Trading Corp to learn how to dispose of affected products and determine steps like being reimbursed.

Ticks can be active in any season and it's important to check for and remove the bloodsuckers as quickly as possible — especially after you've been outside hiking, gardening or enjoying nature. 'Humans are outside more in summer so we hear about more tick infections,' said Sam Telford, an infectious diseases expert at Tufts University. But he urges caution year-round because 'every season is tick season.' While tick populations vary a lot regionally, some Northeastern states including Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are seeing 'above average' numbers of American dog ticks this year, said Telford. And New York state is seeing a higher number of reported deer tick bites this year than last year, said Saravanan Thangamani, who studies tick-borne diseases at SUNY Upstate Medical University. How ticks can spread disease Ticks, like mosquitos, need to feed on blood. But instead of a quick prick, they are slow feeders – with hooked mouth parts that attach into the skin of deer, rabbits, dogs and people. There are many different species of ticks found globally and only some spread germs that can make people sick. A main worry is blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks, which can spread Lyme disease. Once found mainly in New England and pockets of the Midwest, the ticks are now present over a wider range. A tick bite doesn't always lead to illness. 'If you remove a tick within 24 hours of attachment, it's fairly unlikely that you will get infected,' said Telford. How to check for ticks Ticks are usually found low to the ground, in leaf litter or grassy areas. Check your clothing for ticks and do a full-body check including under the arms and behind ears, knees and hair. 'If you're out all day long, try to do a quick check for ticks every few hours,' said Bobbi Pritt at the Mayo Clinic. 'When you go back inside, take a shower. That will wash off any unattached ticks, and you're also more likely to spot any other ticks." Use tweezers to remove the tick and grasp it as close to the skin as possible to pull from the head. If you don't have them handy, you can also use your fingernails, the edge of a credit card or any semi-sharp object. How to keep ticks away The best approach is to minimize tick exposure altogether. Bug sprays containing ingredients such as DEET can be sprayed on exposed skin to ward off ticks and mosquitos, said Telford. Wear long sleeves and pants, and you can also spray clothing with repellents containing permethrin, a chemical similar to a natural ingredient in chrysanthemums that makes ticks avoid the flowers. Protect your pets from ticks Don't forget to pay attention to outdoor pets. Medications can prevent fleas and ticks from attaching to a dog's skin. But it's still a good idea to check the fur after being outside. 'Wherever pets can't easily groom themselves, that's where the ticks will be – on the ears, around the muzzle area, under the collar, between the toes,' said Thangamani. Dogs and cats roaming outdoors can also bring ticks into the house. 'If pets bring ticks in, a tick can live in the house for months until it finds its next blood meal,' which could be another household member, he said. What to do after a tick bite After removing the tick, keep an eye on the skin around the bite. If a rash or flu-like symptoms appear within several days or weeks, see a doctor. The Ozempic boom has seen a drug widely used to treat diabetes and manage obesity in adults transform into 'miracle' weight loss jab that's coveted by anyone with a few extra kilos to shed. Ozempic and other alternatives like Mounjaro and Wegovy are all different brand names for the drug semaglutide that mimics the the actions of GLP-1 - a hormone in the brain that regulates appetite and feelings of fullness . Weekly doses of these blockbuster weight loss medicines can help people shed 15 to 20 per cent of their body weight on average - but it can also pile on the years and make you look older than you are, experts say. The rapid and drastic weight loss triggered by these medicines has left people 'freaking out' about developing so-called 'Ozempic face', celebrity nutritionist Rose Ferguson told Femail. The 49-year-old former model, who is close friends with Kate Moss and boasts 116,000 followers on Instagram, reported a rise in the number of her clients who are worried about their face transforming from these injections. Semaglutide, which is not a targeted drug, does not just cause loss around the stomach and thighs, but the entire body - including the face. People using skinny jabs like Ozempic might notice a greater number of wrinkles all over their visage - including on the forehead - as these 'miracle' weight loss treatments cause a loss of volume in the face . According to New York-based cosmetic dermatologist Dr Michele Green, 'this volume loss can also worsen the appearance of existing fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity' and, therefore, contribute to a more 'aged' look with continued use. Cheeks sag When you lose weight over an extended period of time, it allows the skin to contract and shrink with the body - but drugs like Ozempic significantly accelerate the process. Dr Green noted that the appearance of an aged mouth is especially apparent on people who rapidly lose weight from higher doses of the GLP-1 drug. It is characterised by deep folds at the corners of the mouth, increased vertical wrinkles on the lips, sagging skin around the borders of the lips and and drooping skin around the chin. Dr Green has noticed a number of celebrities suffering from Ozempic mouth as the result of taking weight loss drugs, with some of her standout examples being Sharon Osbourne, Rebel Wilson and Whoopi Goldberg. Tooth decay The latest side effect linked to the use of skinny jabs is tooth decay, with experts noting a rise in the number of patients complaining of 'Ozempic teeth'. The unofficial umbrella term refers to dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease linked to these weight loss drugs that are now used by millions across the world. 'While there is no direct scientific evidence yet , in clinical settings semaglutide drugs like Ozempic are starting to show correlation with damaged teeth,' Dr Sandip Sachar, a dentist, told The Standard. Experts told the outlet there could be a couple of different reasons for this. First, GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic can lead to less saliva being produced and, consequently, hinder the mouth's self-cleansing abilities. The second reason is linked to acid reflux, a common side-effect of these jabs. An increase in the amount of acid 'can erode your teeth,' Dr Daniel Atkinson, clinical lead at told the paper. Finally, Ozempic's appetite-suppression qualities can make it difficult for the body to get the nutrients it requires to maintain healthy teeth.
