Dubai's Porteous steps into the spotlight as title defense builds to a thrilling climax
Chasing Porteous closely is Italian Renato Paratore at 13 under, following a five-under 65. Davis Bryant (USA), Sebastian Garcia (Spain), and Robin Sciot-Siegrist (France) are all two shots back at 12 under, with a tightly packed leaderboard promising fireworks in the final round.
The 35-year-old, who now calls Dubai home, has been making the most of his local knowledge and comfort in the UAE, navigating the firm greens and fiery fairways to sit one stroke clear at 14 under par heading into Sunday's final round.
'I started off poorly. I was a couple over through five and then managed a few birdies to get one under through nine and then played well on the back,' said Porteous, who stepped back from full-time professional golf last year but clearly still has the firepower to compete at the top.
His back nine included three key birdies—none more clutch than the one at the 18th, which nudged him ahead of Paratore and set up a thrilling finale in the Garden City.
'I was just trying to hit greens. The greens are a lot firmer this year and releasing out a lot. If you miss the fairway you've got to try and find the putting surface," Porteous added. 'I've just had one swing thought all week and I got away from that a bit at the start. Obviously, the greens are pure so if you start rolling it well you've got a good chance of it going in.'

Last year, Porteous won this very event with a dazzling 24 under par. Now, with his wife joining him on the bag this weekend, he's looking to keep the vibe relaxed while chasing another big win on home soil.
'I am excited. I've got my wife on my bag, she came up last night so it's still a relaxed atmosphere and we are having fun on the course,' he said 'There are so many good guys right behind me. The course sets up for a lot of birdies so if I can create the birdies then people have got to overtake me.'
As the leading Dubai-based contender, Porteous is carrying the local hopes into Sunday, with support pouring in from UAE golf fans and sponsors including Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Arena, Al Laith, and eGolf Megastore. The game of golf continues its impressive global growth, with the R&A's newly released 2024 Global Participation Report confirming that 108 million adults and juniors now play golf across its affiliated markets, up nearly 3 million from 2023. This surge includes both traditional on-course formats and the booming world of simulator golf, adventure golf, and driving ranges. In the UAE, this trend is increasingly visible, with an estimated 20,000+ active players, including a rising number embracing off-course formats like simulator golf, which has seen a marked increase across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. For the first time, junior participation data has been incorporated, revealing that 43.9 million juniors now play globally, with a striking 80% engaging through formats other than 9- or 18-hole golf. This reflects the UAE's own junior golf ecosystem, where school programs and shorter formats are helping draw more children into the sport. 'The growth in non-traditional formats such as driving ranges, adventure golf and simulator golf is helping drive participation among adults and juniors on a global scale while on-course activity also remains very popular,' said Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A. 'Over 100 million people playing golf in some format is significant and highlights the sport's sustained appeal.' The total adult participation stands at 64.1 million, with on-course players (9- and 18-hole) now at 43.3 million, up from 42.7 million the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of registered golfers, those formally part of golf clubs, has grown steadily to 8.4 million. Asia remains the top region with 26.2 million adult golfers, followed by Europe and Canada. In Europe alone, junior participation has topped 18.5 million. Encouragingly, women now account for 31% of adult golfers in the R&A's top markets, and 50% of adult participation in non-traditional formats. As the UAE continues to invest in golf tourism, luxury golfing communities, and youth academies, the region is poised to mirror, and contribute to, this global momentum. With events like the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, DP World Tour Championship, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the recent growth of golf entertainment venues, the sport is quickly becoming a lifestyle choice for many in the Emirates.

With the gentlemen playing from the Tournament Tees and the ladies from the Forward Tees, anticipation for this annual event was at an all-time high. Champions Rise in Dubai Unlike Scheffler's dominant display overseas, the leaderboard in Dubai saw a tight contest. Ultimately, it was the dynamic duo of Mark Schoombie and 2025 Lady Captain Tanya Harrison who emerged victorious. HYROX attracts over 3,500 athletes from 124 nationalities in Abu Dhabi
21 July 2025 14:13 ABU DHABI (WAM) The Abu Dhabi Sports Council, in collaboration with HYROX and ADNEC Abu Dhabi, hosted HYROX, the world's largest indoor fitness race and the leading fitness event in the Middle event, held on Sunday, brought together 3,506 athletes from across the globe, including 213 professional represented 41 percent of the participants, with the 30-35 age group being the most from 124 nationalities took part, including 340 Emiratis. The United Kingdom led the participant demographics with 24 percent, followed by the UAE with 9 percent, and both Ireland and the Philippines with 5.25 percent race consisted of eight 1km running rounds, interspersed with eight functional fitness workouts, forming a complete challenge that tested both strength and was open across several categories: Individual (Men and Women), Doubles (Men, Women, Mixed), Doubles Pro, Individual Pro, Relay Teams (4 persons), and a dedicated category for People of event kicked off with the men's category at 7:00 am, followed by the remaining categories throughout the day, concluding with the men's relay at 9:00 ceremonies began at 12:45 pm after the first race and continued until 10:45 pm after the final event.
