Watch: Zip through highways: ₹3,000 FASTag pass offers unlimited travel from Aug 15

The Hindu26-06-2025
The Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has just announced a new FASTag-based Annual Pass, designed to make highway travel smoother and more affordable for private vehicle owners.
Starting August 15, 2025, private car owners can opt for a ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass. This is available only for non-commercial vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans.
Commercial vehicles are not allowed under this scheme. Interestingly, lorry owners are now asking the government to extend a similar pass to commercial vehicles too.
This Annual Pass is valid only on toll plazas operated by the National Highways Authority of India, which means it applies to National Highways and Expressways. If you're driving on a State Highway or a toll road run by a local body or a private operator, you'll still have to pay the regular toll.
Trip calculation depends on the type of toll system. At point-based toll plazas, one crossing is counted as one trip. If you're doing a round trip, that's two trips. On closed toll systems like some expressways entering and exiting once counts as one trip.
To activate the Annual Pass, you first need to ensure your FASTag is active and properly fixed to your vehicle. Then, visit the RajmargYatra app or the NHAI website.
Once there, enter your vehicle and FASTag details, pay ₹3,000, and you're good to go. You'll receive an SMS confirmation once the pass is activated.
The pass is valid either for 200 trips Once either limit is reached, your FASTag will automatically return to the regular toll deduction mode. And if you exhaust your trips before the year ends, you can recharge and get a new pass for another ₹3,000.
Although this is completely optional. You can continue using your regular FASTag without the annual pass.
But if you're someone who travels frequently maybe you commute daily road trips this pass could help you save anywhere between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 a year.
The government hopes the Annual Pass will ease some of the most common frustrations among highway users things like high toll charges, too many toll plazas in short stretches, and time lost in long queues.
The Ministry says this move will help reduce congestion, avoid disputes, and make highway travel faster and fairer.

Piyush Goyal exhorts nation's youth to be architects of Viksit Bharat

New Delhi: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, on Friday exhorted the country's youth to actively contribute to building a Viksit Bharat by 2047, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Panch Pran' (five pledges) for 'Amrit Kaal'. Inaugurating India's International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Conference 2025 here, the minister called upon the youth to commit themselves to making India a developed country by 2047. Recalling the Prime Minister's address on August 15, 2022, he said the 25-year period of Amrit Kaal leading up to the centenary of India's independence in 2047 is a defining moment for the nation. He elaborated that the first of the five pledges is the resolve to make India a developed nation. Urging the youth to visualise themselves over the next few decades, he said they will be the primary drivers of this transformation. 'This commitment can only be realised if we also embrace the remaining four pledges with equal seriousness,' he told the gathering. The second pledge, Goyal noted, is to shed the colonial mindset. Referring to India's rich history as a global economic powerhouse, he said centuries of foreign subjugation had eroded confidence and imposed limitations. 'We must not be bound by the constraints of the past but instead aspire to meet global benchmarks and set ambitious goals,' he stated. The third pledge is about taking pride in India's heritage. Goyal said that India's history, culture, traditions and value systems hold deep significance as we move towards becoming a developed nation. 'Vikas bhi, virasat bhi – we must pursue development while preserving our heritage. Our diversity is our strength, and we must amalgamate our traditions into a collective journey towards progress,' he added. Speaking about the fourth pledge, the minister said that unity and integrity of the nation must be paramount. Commending IIMUN for its efforts to engage youth from across India and abroad, Goyal remarked that this unity is India's greatest strength and must be nurtured at every level. He underscored that this collective spirit is fundamental to the country's journey towards becoming a developed nation. The fifth pledge, he said, is the collective resolve of 1.4 billion Indians to contribute to nation-building. Goyal emphasised that a developed India can only emerge when all citizens work together like a family, with shared responsibility and compassion. 'We must be concerned for the marginalised, care for the underprivileged, and ensure that our progress is inclusive and sustainable,' he said. The minister encouraged the youth to accept nation-building as a duty and a privilege, and to perform every task with commitment and dedication. He urged them to inculcate care and concern for others and give their best to whatever job they undertake. Goyal also urged the youth to actively consider participating in public life. Recalling the Prime Minister's address on Independence Day 2024, he noted that the Prime Minister had called upon one lakh young men and women to enter politics and public service to become agents of change. 'There is a need for capable and committed individuals to contribute to policymaking with compassion, dedication, and a spirit of service,' he said. Goyal urged the youth to take charge of India's future, saying, 'Be the changemakers, the movers and shakers of tomorrow's India. With collective resolve, we can overcome every challenge and lead our nation to greater heights.'

5,600 startups and counting: UAE leads GCC's startup revolution

Over 550 fintech companies operate in the UAE, supported by ecosystems like Hub71 , which raised $224 million in early-stage investments and facilitated over 423 jobs. Oman launched a regulated fintech sandbox, accepting digital payments, DLT, and alternative finance ideas, backed by Central Bank initiatives. The GCC is entering a high-tech era fueled by ecosystem building, open regulations, and investor interest. A quiet revolution is reshaping the Gulf's economic landscape, driven not by oil but by a surge in startups, fintech innovation, and digital infrastructure. GCC initiatives foster collaboration through funding, regulatory ease, and cross-border mobility. Regulatory Environment & Open Innovation The UAE boasts free-zone legal frameworks, investor-friendly laws, and international treaties supporting full foreign ownership and simple setup . Hub71, backed by Ghadan 21 and Mubadala, provides mentorship, capital access, and global partnerships. Oman's sandbox requires business viability, AML/CFT compliance, and risk measures, ensuring responsible fintech growth . Challenges & Future Opportunities Scaling : Though registration volume is high, transitioning startups to mature stages remains a challenge; funding concentration is often in the top 10 ventures . Talent gaps : Tech growth demands greater local skill development—particularly in AI, IoT, Blockchain, and cybersecurity. Ecosystem integration : Collaboration between national systems and across GCC borders offers both a challenge and unique advantage. The GCC is rapidly evolving into a high-tech powerhouse. The UAE leads with scale, investment, and regulatory support, while Oman pioneers safe experimentation through sandboxes. Other Gulf states are steadily building complementary infrastructures. For entrepreneurs and investors, the region offers a fertile landscape but success hinges on translating startup registration numbers into sustainable growth, mature businesses, and an integrated GCC marketplace.
