Passport fraud syndicate: 7 suspects to appear in Durban court

The Citizen17-06-2025
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and law enforcement have arrested seven people allegedly involved in a passport fraud syndicate.
Berea Mail reports that the suspects, foreign nationals operating in Durban, will appear in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court today.
Initially, five people were arrested, but two more have been arrested since the weekend.
'The Serious Corruption Investigation component of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, based in Pretoria, has arrested an additional two suspects in the ongoing operation that began on Saturday in KZN, bringing the number to seven,' says Hawks' Colonel Katlego Mogale.
'The execution operation emanates from a complaint from the DHA relating to the issuance of fraudulent passports to undocumented foreign nationals. The allegations reported serious offences including corruption, fraud and contraventions of the Identification Act [68 of 1997] and Immigration Act [13 of 2002] that took place between February 2020 and July 2023, wherein a group of South African citizens allegedly facilitated the fraudulent acquisition of South African passports by foreign nationals at DHA offices in Durban, specifically the Commercial Street branch.
'These unlawful activities took place outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays, when the DHA offices were officially closed.
'Preliminary investigations by the DHA confirmed that the criminal activities were indeed conducted [during] off-hours when local citizens [were] offered R300 to R1 000 in exchange for their co-operation, especially at DHA offices in Isipingo, Durban Central and Eshowe, resulting in a case being opened for investigation by Serious Corruption Investigation.'
The Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber reiterated: 'Our strategy of clamping down on criminals, while using technology to close loopholes they exploit, is how we will ultimately win the war against corruption.'
The Hawks are not ruling out the possibility of more suspects being arrested.

Police commissioner Makhwanazi to be gifted two cows from public

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be the proud owner of two cows, thanks to a BackaBuddy fundraising initiative. The gift follows the high-ranking official's bombshell allegations last week about the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu's alleged underworld dealings. On the X platform, notorious troll Chris Excel launched a crowdfunding initiative to gift Nhlanla Mkhwanazi two cows as a 'token of appreciation.' The mysterious social media profile encouraged his followers to dig into their pockets for the charitable cause. Soon enough, his BackaBuddy campaign had succeeded the R35 000 goal. According to Excel, he was currently dealing with formalities, pending the release of the funds, which would be used to purchase and transport two cows to Mkhwanazi in Durban. Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will convene a 'public meeting' to give South Africans feedback on his response to Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's allegations against high-ranking officials. The television briefing will take place on Sunday, 13 July at 19:00 and will be broadcast on various platforms. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . High life to 'high and dry': Where is MaMkhize's ex, Sbu Mpisane?

While Shauwn Mkhize – also known as MaMkhize – has been hogging the headlines lately for all the wrong reasons, her ex, Sbu Mpisane, has been lying low. The former policeman-turned-politician and the businesswoman officially divorced last year. Although MaMkhize and Sbu Mpisane publicly announced their separation in 2019, their divorce was formally finalised last year. Mpisane – the father of Andile and Sbahle – claimed their split had not left him 'high and dry', as assumed by the public. He told Sunday World: 'I have survived from the inception of the divorce, and I still do. The final divorce settlement was in line with the constitution and laws of the country. 'However, our divorce papers were clear that our marriage was irreparable, based on the reasons known to her since she was the author of the divorce.' According to Sbu Mpisane's legal representative, assets accumulated in their marriage were 'distributed equally.' Furthermore, it was agreed that neither party was legally responsible for the other's debts. Sbu Mpisane first made headlines for his lavish lifestyle as a Metro police officer in the dog unit department in Durban. Despite earning less than R20 000 per month, the hotshot cop drove a Lamborghini to work and lived in a R15,5 million mansion, claims The Witness. Sbu and Shauwn (MaMkhize) often flashed their cash through star-studded parties, attended by the who's who of society and cabinet. The high-flying couple claimed that their wealth was accrued through their multimillion-rand business tenders. Sbu soon resigned from the Metro police and joined his wife in their family business, Zikhulise Group, which deals in the construction, cleaning, maintenance, and transport sectors. Where is MaMkhize's ex-husband, Sbu Mpisane, now? Images via Instagram: @royalam_fc/Gap Fixers SA After their split in 2019, there was a disagreement about ownership of their soccer club, Royal Eagles. The club later became Real Kings, and Royal AM, which has since been expelled from the PSL. The 'dirty laundry' was aired via an Instagram rant by their son, Andile Mpisane. In 2023, Sbu Mpisane – who still resides in their La Lucia marital home – announced his political ambitions as the chairperson of the Gap Fixers of South Africa party. He continues his work in the party, which promises to 'fix' racial inequality in the country. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
