I wore this season's white lace blouse five ways – my inner bohemian has been converted
Beyond designer price-tags, the high street is on board with the white lace look. John Lewis and Marks & Spencer both stock the trend and lace offers the perfect segue into spring, visually and literally. Feeling a light breeze through the gauzy fabric is a balm while the pale shades look airily-appropriate in the sunshine. A lace blouse is also the ideal proposition to update the 'jeans-and-a-nice-top' equation for 2025. Clare Hornby, founder of wardrobe saviours Me+Em agrees. 'The femininity a lace blouse provides acts as the perfect foil to masculine tailoring for events or slouchy denim for am/pm dressing.'
I'm almost sold on the style but a sticking point is that true 'boho babes' seem to eschew underwear with their lace blouses… Sienna Miller might be able to win red carpet plaudits wearing a white lace dress with nothing underneath, her modesty covered with just a few strands of honey-coloured hair, but does the trend translate to real life? Namely, can a non-celebrity woman in mid-life make it work? Fran Bacon is a self-confessed 'white blouse addict' and shares styling tips in her Instagram posts. Bacon tells me to try, 'knitwear worn over shoulders – think Eighties style – to add a pop of colour' and also advises the addition of 'a nude vest top underneath. It will give the sheer look with coverage and warmth'.
A vest is always a sensible addition but with the catwalk and red carpet iterations of white lace, no slips are to be seen. While keeping true to the trend yet without wishing to get arrested, I plan five ways to wear this season's key white lace blouse using various layers. Demure and mindful is my goal, so my first port of call is Marks & Spencer's lingerie department. My quest to find something more substantial than bra-free, yet more carefree than a camisole, leads to their non-wired bralettes, £22 for three.
Boho denim
Blouse, £69, And/Or at John Lewis; Gilet, £35.99, Zara; Skirt, £99, Karen Millen; Shoes, Alex's own
For my first outing in white lace I start with a poet-sleeved blouse from And/Or at John Lewis. The detailing is heavy – I've seen skimpier T-shirts – but I team it with an embroidered gilet and swishy denim skirt. When you choose your lace, shopping in real life is helpful so you can clearly see the level of sheerness you will be dealing with. Note that guipure lace has the most dense fabrication, with fewer bare patches, and a substantial feel. I definitely feel like I've ticked the boho mood of the moment without looking like I'm Ibiza-bound (I'm actually browsing the veg stall at my local market…)
Add a knit vest
Blouse, £39.50, Marks & Spencer; Knitted vest, £75, Albaray; Chinos, £76, Boden; Boat shoes, £45, Marks & Spencer; Scarf, £4.99 for pack of three, Amazon
For coffee with friends in the garden at Soul Cafe I choose Marks & Spencer 's ruffle blouse. The deep v-neck is accented by frothy ruffles which drape just-so to hide the model's nipples online. However I need more than a ruffle so add a chunky knit vest from Albaray in this season's most on-trend tone of butter yellow. The necklines clash slightly, so the ruffles stay tucked in. Although I'm sipping a mocha, this top would be beautiful to wear for cocktails. Of course these sweet blouses will all work with jeans, but taking it one step away from the obvious, I try this look with chinos. The combo of tough khaki, sunshine colour and delicate lace has me smiling. I swear I have more doors held open for me as I make my way through town.
Styled with a mini dress
Blouse, £175, Me+Em; Dress, £150, Sezane; Shoes, £35, Marks & Spencer
Emboldened, and while the sun is still shining, I layer my next lace blouse with a mini-dress. Me+Em 's off-white lace blouse comes with a camisole attached, making it a practical choice, and I remember Clare Hornby's wise advice. 'Whenever we're building or styling outfits, the key to maintaining a modern feel is contrast, whether that's through texture or shape. A lace blouse can deliver on both fronts.' So the structure of the shift dress, combined with the delicacy of the lace, is a stylistic yes. (Although I wish I'd added another layer of fake tan to my pasty legs on their first outing this spring…)
Try it with a suit
Blouse, £110, Sezane; Blazer, and matching trousers, £427, Kipper; Shoes, Alex's own
The lace blouse has definitely been a daytime success, so I decide to style it after dark. Nodding to the Seventies' origin of bohemian style, I choose a caramel-brown corduroy trouser suit to offset Sezane 's high-necked lace blouse, for a trip to the theatre. A pair of white heels – one of spring's other key updaters – keep the look contemporary, rather than retro. While I chose the blazer for it's enveloping properties, I slip it off for interval drinks and don't feel indecent. This lace blouse has a high neck and pleasingly substantial pattern that feels special enough for a night out without being as naff as a sequinned top or jazzy lurex jumper.
An evening look
Blouse, £170, Reiss; Skirt, £815, Lisa Redman; Shoes and bag, Alex's own
Evening is where the white lace blouse shines, so for my final look I abandon the need for a comfort layer and choose a fine leavers lace-style top from Reiss with flouncy bell sleeves. I add an opulent ball skirt for a black tie dinner and am thrilled to see I'm the only woman not wearing a dress. Switching to separates is a clever way to get more mileage from an individual piece, rather than wearing a one-piece you might only wear once.
I approached the white lace blouse trend with trepidation. I've seen that not all catwalk trends convert to wearable wardrobe staples, however enticing… Yet white lace blouses are brilliantly versatile, switching smoothly from daytime looks to after dark. Add one to your wardrobe to refresh your staple pieces with a contemporary update – without looking so trendy they'll date in weeks. Inhabiting the sweet spot between dressy and dressed-down with insouciant ease, my inner bohemian is converted to the charm of a white lace blouse.

Our picture shows her last weekend parking in the visitors' car park of the 460-capacity Category D nick. Lucy, who split from her former partner in 2019, had stated in a podcast that she was in an 'exclusive new relationship'. Last year, the mum of three, who has played Chas Dingle on ITV's Emmerdale for 23 years, revealed in a personal Instagram video post that she was wearing a diamond engagement ring. A source said: 'Her relationship has been the talk of the prison because some other visitors obviously recognised Lucy the other day as she's been on Emmerdale for ages. 'And Elliott has made no secret of telling other inmates she's his fiancee.' It is not known how and where Lucy met Walker, who is thought to be close to a release date. Walker, from Kidbrooke, South East London, was locked up in 2021 after admitting conspiracy to supply amphetamine. He bought equipment for the drugs lab in Henley-in-Arden, Warks, which was smashed by the National Crime Agency. It was said to be capable of producing 400kg of amphetamine — with an estimated street value of £10millon — every month. Emmerdale's Lucy Pargeter splits from long-term boyfriend Rudi Coleano Gang members had chemistry training in order to run the operation and the drugs were distributed in London, Kent and the West Midlands. Another gang member got 18 years after admitting drug and money laundering offences. Others were found guilty at trial. Lucy, who came third on I'm A Celebrity in 2013, has told previously that she had breast implants removed as they hampered her breathing. The Sun on Sunday has approached her for comment. 5 Last year, the actress let slip in a personal Instagram video post she was wearing a diamond engagement ring

Social media scammers set up accounts targeting Harry Potter stars
Bogus pages have popped up after Scottish actor Dominic McLaughlin was announced as the boy wizard Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHAMEFUL scammers have set up a string of fake social media accounts pretending to be Harry Potter star Dominic McLaughlin, we can reveal. Bogus pages - claiming to be run by his parents - have popped up weeks after it emerged the Scots kid actor will appear in HBO's TV adaptation of the famous book series. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 4 Scammers have set up a number of accounts in the child actor's name 4 It comes after Dominic McLaughlin was announced as star of the HBO series 4 The series is set to be released late next year 4 Arabella Stanton, Dominic McLaughlin, and Alastair Stout will be in the main roles Dominic, from Glasgow, beat thousands of others for the boy wizard lead role. But weeks after he was announced as playing Harry Potter, online weirdos have now taken advantage of his rising public profile by impersonating him on the internet. PR consultant Mark Borkowski warned the young actor's team should jump into action and protect him. He said: 'The issue is that, particularly when you get thrust into the public arena these days, you become public property very quickly. 'And getting this break is going to be enormous. But, as we've seen in the past with other young stars, it's also a bit of a curse. 'The younger you are, obviously there's rules and regulations, but the badlands of the internet don't sort of grip the same principles. 'There's a huge Harry Potter fan base, as we know, and there's been a lot of expectation for this latest version of it. 'It will all come down to protecting him because of his age and allowing him to grow up against a backdrop of a huge amount of attention on him, both on and offline. And that is incredibly difficult to manage.' One Instagram account in Dominic's name has dozens of photos of the actor, and hundreds of followers. A bio says: 'Young actor. Playing Harry Potter in HBO's new series. Account managed by parents.' Toy Show star lands major role in Harry Potter A string of posts claim to be documenting his journey with the account boasting of 'bringing my best to Harry Potter', 'another change to make a bit of magic happen' and thanking fans for their support. Another 'parent managed account' in Dominic's name has links to channel HBO and streaming platform Stream On MAX. Alex Dowal, of the Cyber and Fraud Centre Scotland, warned most social media operators are struggling to take down fake profiles. He said: 'It's not actually a crime to set up a profile in someone's name. 'It goes against the terms and conditions of Facebook and Instagram. Unfortunately, the scale of policing that is virtually non-existent. 'It becomes a crime if you are seeking to benefit from pretending to be someone else. 'It probably wouldn't take long before some fake endorsements using his profile come out. That would consitute fraud.' We told how the cast were revealed by Warner Bros last month with film bosses pledging a 'faithful adaptation' of the books by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling. Earlier this week, the writer said she had read the first two episodes, adding: 'They are so, so, so good.' A spokeswoman for Warner Bros Discovery said: 'We won't be commenting at this time.'

Jessie J went into 'survival mode' after cancer diagnosis as she shares regret
Singer Jessie J is continuing to share thoughtful reflections on her recent breast cancer surgery as she updates fans amid her recovery from the procedure Singer Jessie J has shared an emotional update as she continues to recover from breast cancer surgery. The Price Tag singer announced in June that she had been diagnosed with early breast cancer and that she would be undergoing treatment. The artist, whose real name is Jessica Cornish, and her partner Chanan Safir Colman, had a son, Sky Safir Cornish Colman, in May 2023. In a message to fans shortly after having her operation, the former Voice UK judge admitted she was missing being "an active mum/human." On Saturday, Jessie took to her Instagram Stories to reflect on her diagnosis two weeks on from surgery. "2 weeks post surgery. Had my drain out 2 nights ago. She said breathe in and take a hard breathe out. She whipped that thang out so quick. Woii oii. Weirdest feeling. But so nice to have it out after 12 days," she wrote. "Now it's just me and my wonky boobs trying to figure out how to dress until I match them up. The left one is looking at me like 'you ok babe?' Also my experience was when I was diagnosed I went into survival mode. 'There was so much going on with appointments and in my mind esp with a toddler I had just moved and was about to start this campaign after 8 years away. Mad. "I didn't really have a lot of time to process what was happening or what was going to happen. So I'm currently experiencing some delayed sadness and frustration by having time to process what IS happening." Jessie continued: "A little disappointed in myself I didn't say goodbye to my old boob enough. Sounds silly but that's where I'm at. Again that's my journey. I'm sure others feel different. "But for me I didn't think beyond the surgery. I was just being strong. Well now I'm here and letting myself be angry and sad and all the things. Just for a few days. Then I will sew some padding in a bra to even them out order some t-shirts and crack tf on." Last month, the mum-of-one revealed she had stopped taking pain medication, saying it is "just not my thing". A social media update from the star featured a picture of Jessie's wound drain, a tube which helps remove excess fluid or blood that can accumulate after surgery. She asked her followers: "Anyone else who has had this, did you feel like you are walking around one of those dog / duck toys. I carry mine on the floor when I'm home so the gravity can help the drain. Hoping it's out by the end of the week." The artist has battled with ill health throughout her life, having been diagnosed with a heart condition aged eight, suffering a minor stroke aged 18 and having briefly gone deaf in 2020. The Domino singer said she is "feeling positive and grateful", and asked fans not to worry if she "seems a little out of it" in public. "If you do see me out, sitting in a park or coming out of a doctor's appointment or eating or walking or anything, and I seem a little out of it. I am," Jessie said. "It's not personal. I don't have what I usually have to give energy wise, understandably. I will get there. It's a slow road."
