Aussies will be given the opportunity to fly directly from Brisbane to the sandy plains of the Persian Gulf thanks to a new travel route opened up by Virgin Australia.
Starting from Thursday, Virgin is launching flights from Brisbane to Doha's Hamad International Airport in conjunction with Qatar airways.
Virgin Australia chief executive Dave Emerson said the new flights 'mark the beginning of a new era' for the company and for international travel to Australia. 'Through our partnership with Qatar Airways, we're not just launching new routes – we're opening the world to millions of Australians, delivering more choice, better value and a seamless global experience,' he said.
'This partnership strengthens Australia's global connectivity while generating jobs, boosting tourism and injecting billions into the national economy.'
Hamad International Airport supports 48 airlines, and ushers millions of passengers through its terminals every month.
Queensland Tourism Minister Andrew Powell said the new flights to Hamad would position the Sunshine State as a new gateway between Australia and the rest of the world.
'These new flights mean more tourists enjoying everything Queensland has to offer, giving visitors from all over the world affordable ways to reach our communities, boosting business for Queensland tourism operators,' he said. About 2.65 million passengers are expected to be arriving in Doha from Australia annually by
this December, which Virgin says will increase 'competitiveness in the market and (provide) ample choice for Aussie travellers wanting to visit Europe, Africa and the Middle East'.
Brisbane Airport chief executive Gert-Jan de Graaff welcomed the new flights.
'This marks the most significant increase in capacity between Queensland and Europe in the past two years, and we're confident these new daily flights will boost tourism, strengthen international ties and support Queensland's exporters,' he said.
'It's fantastic news for the Brisbane-headquartered airline and even better news for travellers and Queensland's tourism-driven industry.'
Fares are available now for purchase, with some discounts ranging up to 15 per cent for select travel dates between October 16 and March 31 next year.

ABC journalist Peter Ryan dies aged 64 a month after retirement

Your web browser is no longer supported. To improve your experience update it here ABC journalist Peter Ryan OAM has died aged 64, just a month after retiring due to ill health. The former ABC chief business and finance correspondent left the ABC in June before moving into palliative care for metastatic thyroid cancer. Ryan was first diagnosed in 2014 following a distinguished career with the government broadcaster, including a period as ABC Washington bureau chief and head of TV news and current affairs in Melbourne. Peter Ryan, ABC's former chief business and finance correspondent, has died aged 64. (ABC) In 2022, he was awarded the Order of Australia medal for his service to journalism. "Peter leaves a significant legacy. Through his mentorship, friendship and professionalism he directly touched the lives of many at the ABC," said ABC news director Justin Stevens. "Through his journalism he had a profound impact on the lives of Australians and our society. "It was a privilege to know him and work alongside him." Upon announcement of his retirement in late June, Treasurer Jim Chalmers described Ryan as an "absolute legend". "Every day as you wake up and you think about what's happening in the economy, if you only needed to listen to one voice to be sure that you got its essential elements, it would be Peter's," Chalmers said. In 2022, he was awarded the Order of Australia medal for his service to journalism. (ABC News: John Gunn) Ryan began his career as a copy boy at the now-defunct Sydney Daily Mirror in 1980 at age 18. It was a time, he once said, where people smoked in newsrooms and newspapers were still printed off hot metal. Before his retirement, Ryan had some parting words of advice from his nearly half a century in journalism. "One strong message I have is, never let anyone tell you the good old days were really that good – that's a bit of a myth," Ryan said. "I'd like to thank the ABC for taking so many risks with me over the years, giving me my dream of a foreign posting in Washington and then into big editorial roles. "But for me in the end it's all about being a reporter out in the real world telling it as it is. I'm always chuffed when I hear people tell me you're able to take complex issues and break them down into three good parts. "When someone tells me that, that's more important than a whole lot of awards." Ryan leaves behind his wife, Mary, and a daughter, Charlotte. ABC journalist media Australia national CONTACT US

Aussies could soon have a four-day working week, in new push announced to boost productivity

Australians could soon enjoy a four-day working week, as unions make a fresh push for shorter working weeks and more holidays over tax cuts to help improve Australia's productivity. The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation launched the push in response to the Productivity Commission, which will set the agenda for next month's economic reform roundtable. AMWU national secretary Steve Murphy told The Australian last week there needed to be a discussion about cutting hours in response to increased productivity, which will benefit Aussie workers. Murphy has argued there is a variety of ways to reduce working hours without cuts to pay, which included four-day week, nine-day working fortnights, or a 35-hour week. Murphy argued that work-life balance was more important to employees than a cut in income tax or company tax, arguing most working Aussies were fine paying taxes to fund government services or infrastructure. 'We're not one of the advocates that says we should pay less tax,' Murphy told the publication. 'One of the ways that we can share in productivity, if we're more productive over the course of the week, is to work less hours. That would be a great outcome from a productivity discussion. 'Or (if) we were able to have more annual leave to spend our time with the people that we love and care about.' On Monday, Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek joined a Sunrise panel the government was open to ideas. 'We'll listen to all views respectfully (at the roundtable),' Plibersek said. 'The Treasurer's roundtable on productivity, I think, is a great way of bringing unions and business and other groups together to discuss how we make our economy stronger and more productive. 'What we won't be doing to improve productivity is ask people to work longer for less. 'That was the policy of the previous government. 'We want to invest in our people, boost training, invest in technologies and new ways of working, make sure that we're playing to our competitive advantages as a nation. 'That's how we boost productivity.' Previously, Skills Minister Andrew Giles said key trades to boost productivity in the country will be electricians to help build homes, as well as more people to work in aged care, childcare, health and disability sectors. Parliament will resume on Tuesday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to introduce legislation to cut student debt by 20 per cent, end subsidies for childcare centres that fail to meet safety requirements, and prevent penalty rates from being lowered by the Fair Work Commission.

Jelena Dokic stuns fans as Aussie tennis star looks slimmer than ever in pyjamas while on holiday in Croatia - after debuting new romance

Jelena Dokic has stunned fans as she appeared slimmer than ever before in a photo of herself posing casually in pyjamas while on holiday. The retired tennis great, 42, has publicly chronicled her weight loss journey after shedding about 20 kilos through diet and lifestyle changes. She credits her success to a healthy diet and an exercise regimen, which includes working out at the gym at 6am while working 18-hour days. Dokic took to Instagram on Sunday to showcase her trimmed-down figure in a pastel blue robe on a getaway in her home country of Croatia. In her photo, Jelena looked cheerful and relaxed, wearing white hotel slippers and holding a cup of tea as she basked in the sun's rays. Her hair was gathered loosely in a bun, complementing her natural makeup-free look, and she took to the caption with a heart-warming note. "Slow mornings are the best," Dokic wrote alongside an emoji of tea, the sun and a smiling face with hearts. Fans flooded the comments to say Jelena looked great on her well-deserved getaway following commentating on the Wimbledon tennis tournament, where she reached the semifinals at 16 years old in 2000. "Look at you. What a beautiful transformation, body and soul. Enjoy beautiful lady," one fan wrote. "Wow! Jelena, you look amazing! You are back into your figure when you were playing tennis," another person said. One more fan who was in awe of Dokic's physical transformation said: "How did you lose so much weight? You look amazing". A third fan said the Aussie star looked gorgeous in her photo, adding, "It's good to slow Croatia." "Such an inspirational lady," another person added. A sixth pointed out how "happy, content and peaceful" Jelena appeared. "I'm so inspired by your life experiences and the way you've dig deep to overcome the pain and suffering," they said. The beloved tennis star, who retired from professional tennis in 2014, was nominated for her first-ever Logie award for the Channel 9 documentary Unbreakable, about her turbulent life on and off the court. In the documentary, Dokic harrowingly detailed her father and coach Damir Dokic's alleged physical, emotional and financial abuse, allegedly occurring regularly throughout her childhood and professional career. Jelena ultimately cut ties with her father before his death in May and completely rebooted her career. In 2009, she enjoyed an unforgettable run at the Australian Open after entering the draw as a wildcard and advancing to the quarter-finals. Following her retirement, her career continued as a highly sought-after commentator for all four Grand Slams on Channel Nine. Jelena's love life also took off with her whirlwind career off the court. She went public with her new boyfriend Yane Veselinov earlier this month following weeks of speculation about who the mystery man was. Dokic took to Instagram to reveal the identity of her new beau just weeks after published bombshell footage of the pair getting cosy at Melbourne Airport. "You are my calm, safe, peaceful and happy place. So glad I found you," Dokic wrote alongside a romantic snap with her new partner. Yane is a hospitality operations manager who on Instagram describes himself as a "food and wine enthusiast, pleasure seeker and life enjoyer". It comes after Dokic split from her previous partner, Bukic, in late 2022 after an almost two-decade-long relationship.
