Gamers shocked as Elder Scrolls IV revealed and launched on same day
Video game studio Bethesda has announced the long-rumoured launch of a remastered version of its 2006 hit Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
The fourth instalment of the series has maintained a cult following among fans despite it being almost two decades since its original release.
Now, gamers have been surprised as a remaster of the classic game has not only been announced - but released to digital stores immediately.
It comes as fans await the next game in the series, with the most recent entry - Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - having been released in 2011.
More than 600,000 people watched the live announcement on YouTube.
And the reveal that the game would be available immediately drew shock and excitement from those watching, with many viewers writing "Praise be Todd" in the comments - in reference to Bethesda director Todd Howard.
In 2006, Oblivion launched on PC and the Xbox 360 console as the product of a co-publishing agreement between Bethesda and Take-Two Interactive's label, 2K Games.
"Oblivion was a really defining moment in the series," Howard said in the announcement.
"I think with a remaster, we want people to feel the way they did then - but it's still a game of its time, you want to keep the bones in place," he said.
Bethesda showed off a series of significant graphics upgrades in its launch video, with updated gameplay, user interface and audio systems.
Players will also be able to upgrade their characters in a new way, combining systems both from the original and the sequel.
One of the developers called the remaster "a love letter" to the original game.
Set in the open world of Tamriel, the game places players in an empire on the verge of downfall - after the mysterious death of Emperor Uriel Septim VII leaves behind a vacant throne and missing heir.
Rachel Howie, a content creator and Twitch partner, said the game was "long overdue the currently very trendy remaster treatment".
"It's such a great opportunity for the generation who grew up thinking Skyrim was peak role-playing game to meet its charming little brother," she added.
Oblivion racked up 9.5m sales according to gaming website Polygon, and is fondly remembered by fans.
Skyrim then released five years later to a massive response, selling more than 40 million copies across generations of consoles - it has been re-released on two generations of consoles since it first came out.
The news will now leave fans wondering if they may now soon see some news about Elder Scrolls 6, which was announced in 2018, some seven years after Skyrim's release.
Since then, information on the game has been sparse, and mostly limited to rumours.
But gamers have come to expect a long wait from Bethesda, which is facing demand for a new Fallout game as well - which remains under wraps despite the success of a hit Amazon TV show based on the series.

Todd and Julie Chrisley, who were recently released from prison thanks to a bombshell presidential pardon, are opening up about the legal victory. The former reality-TV stars sat down with President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law and Fox News host Lara Trump for their first television interview in a special that aired Saturday, June 28. The couple was joined by two of their children, 27-year-old daughter Savannah and 19-year-old son Grayson. "We owe thanks to God," Todd, 56, said. "God touched President Trump's heart. God led the people to advocate for us. And so, I'm grateful, because every night I would pray that God would return me home to my wife and my children. And he did that, so I'm grateful." Todd and Julie, best known for their USA Network series "Chrisley Knows Best," had been in prison since January 2023, serving up to 10 years for using fraudulent loans to defraud community banks in Georgia. Julie's release date before Trump's pardon was slated for January 2028, while Todd's was set for April 7, 2032. Their 2022 conviction also found them guilty of defrauding the IRS and committing tax evasion; Julie Chrisley was additionally convicted of obstruction of justice and wire fraud. On May 27, Trump called Savannah Chrisley, who actively championed her parents' release, to inform her that her parents were "going to be free and clean." The following day, the president signed paperwork granting full pardons to the disgraced TV personalities, a White House official confirmed to USA TODAY at the time. Todd recalled the shock of learning about the pardons after a prison official gave him the good news. "He goes, 'Are you good?' And I said, 'As good as I can be,'" Todd said. "And he says, 'Todd, you just got pardoned. They sent me down here to make sure you're OK.' And I said, 'Well, they don't need to be worrying about me now. Hell, if I'm pardoned, I'm great!'" Julie, 52, added: "(Savannah) said, 'He did it! He signed it!' And I just started busting out crying. ... I'm getting out of here!" Todd Chrisley cried himself to sleep over family separation amid prison sentence During the Chrisleys' interview with Lara Trump, Todd recalled his first night in prison and the emotional devastation of being away from his family, including longtime wife Julie (the couple has been married since 1996). "When the lights went out, I literally cried myself to sleep because it's the first time Julie and I had ever been away from each other since we had been married," Todd said. "I'd never not been in that house when my kids woke up in the morning or when they went to bed at night." Although Todd reportedly wasn't able to contact Julie amid their respective prison sentences, he said he was "never away from her because she was in my spirit the entire time." "I thought of her every second of my day," he added. "And so, when I hugged her the first time (after their release), it was like I was home in my heart spiritually." What's next for Todd, Julie Chrisley after prison release? Couple teases reality-TV return Following their release, Todd and Julie Chrisley told Lara Trump they want to dedicate themselves to prison reform advocacy. "I have a dear friend in there who's 77 years old. And that, unless God intervenes, she's going to die in there. I mean she could be any of our grandmothers," Julie said. "There's so many young women who are young mothers who got these crazy sentences, never been in trouble in their life," she added. "I'm not walking away. That's something, a pledge that I've made to them and to myself." Todd also teased the family's return to reality-television, telling Lara that the yet-to-be-announced show will likely chronicle their move back to South Carolina as they build a new hotel business. So, every week, I'll gather the darkest and creepiest things I find on the internet (and beyond) to share just with you, my spooky-loving friend. So, tuck yourself in tight and get out that flashlight…it's about to get dark. Recently, I found out that in 2019, a man in the UK died after eating a sample of a fish cake that was so hot it burned his throat. And it turns out the burn was so bad it actually caused his throat to swell up to the point where he choked to death less than 12 hours later. Just to really hammer home how nasty the burn was, a pathologist who performed a post-mortem examination on the victim said that this case was so incredibly rare that he'd only seen that kind of damage in people who had breathed in smoke in house fires. And now I'm avoiding fishcakes for the rest of my life. Occasionally, I like to ask the BuzzFeed Community to tell me about the most mysterious, cult-like, bad-vibes towns in the United States they've ever been to. It's vast, seemingly endless, and sometimes you can find some extremely weird (and horrifying) things out there. This week's spotlight: the Disappearance of Tara Calico. Tara Calico, a 19-year-old from Belen, New Mexico, disappeared on Sept. 20, 1988, while riding her bike along the highway. Despite extensive searches and media coverage, including episodes of Unsolved Mysteries and America's Most Wanted, Tara was never found. But what makes the case extra creepy is the fact that in July 1989, a horrifying Polaroid photo of a young woman (who looked like Tara) and a child, both with their mouths duct-taped and seemingly tied up in the back of a van, showed up in a parking lot in Florida. The photo was analyzed several times, including by the FBI, but the results were inconclusive as to whether it was actually Tara in the photo. In 1998, Tara was declared legally dead, and her presumed death was ruled a homicide. Recent investigations have identified potential suspects, but the case still remains unsolved. Jayne Mansfield — Died: June 29, 1967. Cause of Death: Traffic collision How she died: Mansfield was traveling in a 1966 Buick Electra with her driver, her lawyer/boyfriend Sam Brody, and three of her children (including actress Mariska Hargitay) when their car crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer. The Buick went under the trailer, destroying the top of the car and killing Mansfield, Brody, and the driver instantly. The children in the backseat miraculously survived with only minor injuries. There's a popular urban legend that Mansfield was decapitated in the crash, and while she certainly sustained severe head trauma, she was not decapitated. The accident famously led to the creation of "Mansfield bars,' which are guards now required on the rear of semi-trailers to prevent similar accidents. Seriously…it's A. you can watch it: Streaming for free on AMC+ or for rent for $3.99 on Prime Video Aileen Wuornos Known as "The Damsel of Death," Wuornos was a serial killer who murdered and robbed six men (and possibly a seventh) while doing sex work in Florida from 1989 to 1990. Although Wuornos initially claimed she acted in self-defense, she later recanted and said she wasn't a victim and that she simply robbed and killed her victims for money. Wuornos was executed on Oct. 9, 2002. Her last meal: Wuornos declined the last meal option and instead opted for a cup of coffee. Well, I hope I didn't make your Sunday scaries more…scary?!
