Electricity goes out during Shelbourne vs Derry City in League of Ireland opener Derry eventually broke Drogheda's resolve from a short corner. Duffy received the ball back from Whyte and clipped it into a crowded penalty area where Todd headed into the corner of the net. The hosts doubled their lead three minutes later when Duffy raced on to Liam Boyce's through ball and rounded the keeper but his strike was cleared off the line by Quinn. The clearance fell to Ronan Boyce who steered the ball into the net. Derry were well in control but Drogheda found a way in behind the City defence moments later. Thomas Oluwa got away from Mark Connolly and sent a strike towards goal but Brian Maher stood tall and saved at the front post. Carl Winchester had the ball in the net when he received the ball from a sublime defence-splitting pass from Whyte. But the Belfast man strayed offside and the goal was ruled out. Diallo then picked out the run of Duffy with a pass over the top. But the winger's effort on the volley dipped over the crossbar as Derry threatened to put the match to bed before the break. SECOND GEAR Derry continued to dominate at the start of the second half. And livewire Duffy was the next to threaten as his effort from the edge of the penalty area was just deflected behind by Conor Keeley's block. Keeley — scorer of a brace on Drogheda's last visit to the Brandywell — was then in the thick of the action at the other end. The former St Pat's defender chested down a cross inside the Derry box before volleying narrowly wide of the target on 63 minutes. Substitute Mullen put the icing on the cake in the fifth minute of stoppage time for the hosts. Duffy's strike was saved by the foot of Dennison — but it fell straight to the feet of the ex-Livingston ace who tapped in from four yards. Derry City climb to second with comfortable win over Drogheda United

Derry City 3 (Todd 33, Boyce 36, Mullen 95) Drogheda United 0 DERRY CITY's Donegal defensive duo Sam Todd and Ronan Boyce sent the Brandywell outfit on their way to a comprehensive victory over a lacklustre Drogheda United to move into second spot in the table. Carndonagh man Todd headed home the opener on 33 minutes from Michael Duffy's clipped cross and three minutes later Ramelton native Boyce pounced to fire home the rebound when Andrew Quinn cleared Duffy's strike off the line. Substitute Danny Mullen added a third five minutes into stoppage time and again Duffy was heavily involved as his strike at the near post was turned into the path of the Scotsman by Drogheda keeper Luke Dennison. It was a third win on the bounce and a third consecutive clean sheet for the Foylesiders, who remain 11 points behind runaway leaders Shamrock Rovers with two games in hand and above third place Bohemians on goal difference. The win was Derry's first over Drogheda United in 12 months since a 5-1 thumping at Brandywell on June 28th and this one was just as comfortable as they avenged a 3-1 defeat by the Boynesiders earlier in the season. Tiernan Lynch was quite happy to stick with the same starting eleven who won back-to-back games in Dublin against Shelbourne and St Pat's last week despite facing into a third game in the space of eight days. His opposite number Kevin Doherty was down to the bare bones and made two changes from the team which drew 1-1 at Cork in their last outing as Thomas Oluwa and Aaron Harper-Bailey came in for Frank Cooper and Warren Davis. Gavin Whyte was lively in the early stages and when he got the ball into feet from Diallo five minutes into the match, the ex-Portsmouth man turned Gavin Brennan but his shot from 25 yards was saved by Luke Dennison. Derry were dominating the ball but without any real tempo and Drogheda were quite content to let the home side play in front of them without troubling the Boynesiders' defence. From Michael Duffy's inswinging free-kick from wide on the right on 24 minutes Holt rose highest at the front post but his glancing header bounced wide of the far post with Dennison rooted to the spot. Diallo tried his luck from distance on the half hour mark as Drogheda continued to frustrate the Candystripes but the midfielder's effort sailed harmlessly off target. Derry broke Drogheda's resolve from a well worked short corner kick on 33 minutes when Duffy received the ball back from Whyte and clipped it into a crowded penalty area where Todd rose above James Taylor Douglas and headed into the corner of the net for the Carndonagh man's first goal of the season and second in 40 appearances for the Brandywell club. The home outfit doubled their lead three minutes later when Duffy raced onto Liam Boyce's throughball, rounded the keeper but his strike was cleared off the line by Andrew Quinn. That clearance fell to Ronan Boyce who continued his run and steered his close range effort into the net. It was the first time Derry scored two goals in a game since a 2-1 win over Cork City on May 9th in Turner's Cross. Derry were well in control but Drogheda found a way in behind the Derry defence moments later when Thomas Oluwa got away from Mark Connolly and from an angle sent a powerful left footed strike towards goal but Maher stood tall and saved at the front post with a strong left hand. Carl Winchester had the ball in the back of the net on 45 minutes when he received the ball from a sublime defence splitting pass from Whyte but the Belfast man had just strayed into an offside position and the goal was ruled out. Substitute Mullen put the icing on the cake in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Duffy's strike was saved by the foot of Dennison but fell straight to the feet of the Scotsman who tapped in from four yards. Derry City: Maher, Cann, Connolly, Holt; R Boyce, Winchester (McMullan 76), Diallo (O'Reilly 63), Whyte (Mullen 75), Duffy, S Todd; L Boyce (Benson 75). Drogheda United: Dennison, Kane (Cruise 55), Quinn, Harper-Bailey, James-Taylor (Bosakani 87), Farrell, Brennan (Markey 55), Heeney, Keeley, Lambe, Oluwa (Kareem 60). Referee: Robert Harvey (Dublin).

Change in leadership team: Another project boss back

Yet another former boss of the new Dunedin hospital has swung back into the revolving door of its leadership team, sources say. It is understood that former programme director Tony Lloyd was let go from the role last November but is back working on the long-delayed inpatient building again. He first joined the build in June 2022. Mr Lloyd, director of AGL Consulting, joins energy company Todd's boss Evan Davies, who resigned from chairing the build's governance board in June 2023 but returned as Crown manager of the project this month at the behest of Health Minister Simeon Brown. Both men have hospital construction experience, including in Christchurch. However, some sources in the construction industry expressed concern about the two men's comeback in Dunedin, due to the project's overall slow progress. One said: "This smells of positions for mates and corporate interests while the project and people suffer. What confidence can the government give to the South that the build is being managed competently?" Other sources blamed turgid and complex command lines at Te Whatu Ora Health NZ (HNZ) for the project's slow-go, rather than Mr Davies and Mr Lloyd's leadership. There had been "paper pushing and pontificating" up the chain. Minutes from the project's board when it was headed by Mr Davies complain about the problem. During the duo's previous reign, they worked with construction giant CPB which has been planning the build under an Early Contractor Engagement (ECE) agreement that began in August 2021. It was meant to progress to a building contract by early 2023, but it did not happen. Mr Davies, who originally joined the build in December 2020, jumped ship in June 2023 claiming a demanding day job at Todd. In response to a question about the return of Mr Lloyd, Mr Brown said Mr Davies had "full authority" for the inpatient build now, including "making personnel decisions necessary to get the job done". In a separate comment about Mr Davies' reappointment, Mr Brown said the Crown manager role would be easier than Mr Davies' previous hospital role because it was "substantially more limited". The new role was focused on getting the inpatient building constructed. In March last year, prior to Mr Lloyd's departure, an Infrastructure Commission general manager Blake Lepper shifted to be HNZ's head of infrastructure delivery and was consequently named senior responsible officer for the Dunedin hospital project. In March last year, prior to Mr Lloyd's departure, an Infrastructure Commission general manager Blake Lepper shifted to be HNZ's head of infrastructure delivery and was consequently named senior responsible officer for the Dunedin hospital project. When asked last November to comment on Mr Lloyd's exit from the role of programme director, Mr Lepper said HNZ had "looked closely" at the hospital build's management and thought "a different approach is needed". HNZ had signed a letter of intent with Crown Infrastructure Delivery (CID), a company mandated to help agencies struggling to deliver infrastructure, he said. Mr Lepper is understood to have then led the reconsideration of a fixed-price approach to the contract and a ward block refit rather than a new build. The former is thought by some other construction experts to be inadvisable, and the latter is definitely off the table and had been previously. An HNZ spokesperson failed to answer questions about the appointment of Mr Lloyd and whether Mr Lepper or CID were still working on the build. The HNZ spokesperson said the agency was "confident we have the team in place to deliver this modern healthcare facility for the people of the South".

Corrie star reveals worrying future for Todd as Theo story escalates

Gareth Pierce has played troublemaker Todd Grimshaw since 2020. When the Coronation Street character returned, he was hellbent on splitting Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) up. The plan was complex and put a spotlight on the traits that certainly proved Todd didn't have the best moral compass. The narrative reached a dramatic conclusion, and Todd became isolated from the likes of Billy, Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) and Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) due to the depths he sunk to in the process. It's safe to say that this was the last storyline where Todd was really in the centre of the spotlight. During the pandemic, there was a period where Todd and Billy's friendship started to mend itself, and the character was also involved in drama at the funeral parlour alongside friend and colleague George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley). As a huge fan of the character, I found the lack of screentime for Todd somewhat frustrating in this period. In 2022, I wrote about how he had been put back on the bench so soon after the story with Billy and Paul, and it truly felt like the soap was missing an opportunity to have him at the centre of a really powerful plot exploring his mental health, and how the plan of his really impacted him. But, time has past and now, things are changing. Recently, I sat down with star Gareth Pierce to discuss Todd's journey in Weatherfield since he took over the role. We spoke about the many layers of Todd and the growth the character has had, but started with talking about the return five years ago. 'I guess at the start it was about establishing the recast. And also, I suppose what was harder for that at that time, was that you were seeing Todd kind of at his worst as well, where he was, you know, coming back very jealous, probably full of shame as well, in the ways that he's kind of let down Billy and Summer, in the way that he'd left and then just returned determined to split him and Paul. 'I think it was that initial kind of year and a half or so that was super, super busy. And then I suppose, in terms of the MND storyline, Todd was a little bit more peripheral than that. But then that was still to Todd's benefit, because I think you kind of ended up with some really sweet scenes and also, a sweet friendship between Paul and Todd, which obviously didn't look very likely in terms of the way they originally met.' It was earlier this year that saw a huge new storyline finally begin for Todd. He met a scaffolder called Theo, played by James Cartwright, and things really haven't been the same since. We've learnt since then that Theo is an incredibly complex person with a traumatic past. He had been living with wife Danielle (Natalie Anderson) and their children for many years, with Danielle previously having no clue that Theo is gay. His difficult upbringing was then explored, with Theo revealing that he had been put through conversion therapy. Theo often experiences angry and confusing outbursts as a result of a lot of things floating around his mind, and it's something Todd is trying to help him with. 'I think we have a more mature version of Todd now. I think going through losing a young friend like Paul, it's made him rehabilitate himself and prove he's changed. I think we definitely do have a more mature version of Todd that is maybe able to deal with what life throws at him, but we can't forget that not too long ago we had a Todd that felt a little bit like the boy that had never grown up. 'I think he might have a creeping feeling that this is too big for him and that he is out of his depth but also, I think he's changed to the point that he's more likely to see fault in himself than the other person, and be willing to try.' In tonight's episode, Theo will exude his jealousy when he finds out that Todd is spending time with James Bailey (Jason Callender). It is perhaps seen as something relatively small to Todd, given it's the start of a new relationship for him and Theo but to the audience, who are viewing Theo's behaviour from a different perspective to Todd, it's a sign that things may get worse. 'I think it's far more interesting if there's a part of Todd that is flattered by that flirtation [between him and James], that does potentially flirt back a bit', Gareth explained. 'I think that probably in terms of where he is with Theo in the relationship at that point, there is a sense that he can maybe see a slightly easier path that's there with James. 'I don't think that he's tempted to the point that he would do something. I think he pulls back from there, but I think that it's far more interesting…because we know Todd can make plenty of ill-advised choices, and do plenty of less or have plenty less appealing aspects to his character. So I think it's important that we hold on to those.' Opening up about the future of this story, Gareth told me: 'I think at this point, we're starting to spot some anger management issues on Theo's part, at the very least. There's some flashes of anger that have left Todd shocked but equally, because he's had that insight into the conversion therapy and where Theo is coming into this new life from, he's perhaps willing to guide him through it. 'He's trying to be understanding of Theo. He's been suppressing his sexuality for so long, Todd is trying to encourage him towards being someone that can be comfortable in their new gay identity. 'I think Todd has spotted many things from Theo, but he still has the mindset that he can fix this and because of the love that's there, he's thinking they will get through it. Our audience are probably also spotting some of those flashes of jealousy and perhaps a kind of need to control that maybe Todd is not currently spotting or doesn't want to spot.' Gareth went on to highlight that Todd will struggle to differentiate between what is out of order where Theo's behaviour is concerned, and what can be forgiven due to the life he's lived so far. 'I think that's definitely going to be a complicating factor going forward. He knows there are very valid reasons for Theo's confusion and probably some internalised homophobia, but that doesn't mean you can excuse all of the less healthy approaches to navigating the relationship. 'That will be, in many ways, Todd's biggest challenge, how to steer the relationship to somewhere healthy.' More Trending As this story begins to gather pace, Gareth also confirmed Todd's relationship with George will continue to be explored. 'What's nice is that they've got a very solid friendship, and George is like a father figure that Todd has never had. What's important I think is the intention of friendship hasn't weakened just because Eileen has gone. I definitely think that George will be someone that's still looking out for Todd.' 'A few years ago there was a moment where George connected with Todd because he believed in him. I think from George's perspective, he sees a little bit of himself in Todd. He shows faith in some moments. View More » 'I think there was a similar level of vulnerability from Todd there [in the scene earlier in the week]. He's really revealing quite a lot about his true feelings, which we know that he tends to deflect with sarcasm and sardonic looks a lot of the time.'
