Denmark's Boston Beer Company bags Perth Royal Beer Award for The Right nut brown ale
The Perth Royal Beer Awards recognise the State's best brewing, with this year's competition drawing 447 entries across eight categories – from pilsners and stouts to sours and IPAs – submitted by 45 breweries and evaluated by a panel of 47 independent judges.
Boston's head brewer Reid Stratton said the award was a well-earned honour for the brewing team.
'We've been recognised for the really hard work that the brewing team does, and you often don't see a lot of the work that goes into the brewing, we're here early in the morning, toiling away, and making it all happen behind the scenes,' he said.
'So, a couple of times a year during these competitions it is a really great chance to recognise the really hard work that the team's been doing, and it just gives everyone a bit of a boost and a bit of a reminder that there are people out there really enjoying our beers and I really think to get that feedback is really valuable.'
Margaret River Beer Co. snagged the coveted champion beer trophy for its In The Pines IPA, as well as best IPA draught and five gold medals.
Head brewer Ryan Allen marked the moment in style by drinking straight from the trophy.
Each beer was blind-judged against five key criteria – appearance, aroma, flavour, style and technical quality – with medals earned through strict benchmarks of excellence.
Mr Stratton categorised Boston's The Right as a versatile crowd-pleaser.
'It's a beer we've been making from new year's at the brewery and has won awards in the past,' he said.
'It's kind of one of those perfect in-between beers, it's not our bestselling beer, but it's got a really awesome following of people that just love it.'
Boston is always cooking up something new, and Mr Stratton said he was excited about a new quartet of beers being released this Friday.
The new release will be called the Biscuit Tin Quartet, with one beer in each four-pack flavoured after a different kind of popular biscuit, including Wagon Wheels, chocolate chip cookies and mint slice.

King Road Brewery, White Lakes Brewing, Boundary Island awarded for best breweries and beers in WA
The Peel region is becoming a prime location to drink some excellent beers after local brewers were recognised at the Perth Royal Beer Awards last week. King Road Brewing in Oldbury took out multiple awards, including WA champion small brewery, and gold medals for its American Pale Ale, India Pale Ale packaged and King Road IPA. 'We didn't just show up … we cleaned up,' the venue posted on social media. 'We're stoked to be crowned champion small brewery once again. Huge cheers to our brew team — legends behind the tanks — and to everyone who supports local craft beer. These trophies belong to all of you too.' Baldivis' White Lakes Brewing was named WA champion medium brewery, and gold for its Dingo Mid and 100 Day Pilsener. 'We are absolutely over the moon and super proud of our crew who make it feel like working alongside your best mates on the daily!' the team wrote on Facebook. Mandurah's Boundary Island Brewery took out gold with its Rauchbier and Cheeky Monkey, which has venues in Rockingham and Vasse, was awarded for its Conan Irish Red. Commerce Minister Dan Caddy said WA had more than 120 breweries, representing 20 per cent of Australia's craft beer industry. 'This growth is a testament to our State's innovation and to WA's growing reputation around the world for delivering products of outstanding quality,' he said. Royal Agricultural Society of WA president John Snowball congratulated the winners, saying: 'What sets the Perth Royal Beer Awards apart is our commitment to quality and judging integrity'. 'I acknowledge every brewer who submitted their beers for judging this year. 'It takes courage, passion, and pride in your craft to put your work forward.' The Perth Royal Beer Awards, presented by the Royal Agricultural Society of WA (RASWA), are part of the Perth Royal Food Awards — an annual celebration of Australian craftsmanship across food and drink.
