Pesta Babulang returns to Batu Danau for 20th edition this July
KUCHING (May 28): The vibrant 'Pesta Babulang dan Lumba Kerbau' will return to Batu Danau, Limbang, from July 4 to 6, marking its 20th edition as one of Sarawak's most unique and anticipated cultural festivals.
Organised by the Sarawak Bisaya Association, this year's celebration holds added significance as it also commemorates the association's 54th anniversary — a milestone marking decades of cultural preservation and community unity.
'This annual cultural festival has, over the years, grown into a vibrant gathering that brings together not just the Bisaya community but also visitors from across Malaysia and beyond,' the association said in a statement.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate the festival on July 5, reflecting the state government's continued support towards cultural festivals that strengthen Sarawak's diverse identity.
'It is a time of reflection, pride and celebration, and we hope to share it with as many people as possible,' added the association.
Festival-goers can expect a packed programme featuring the thrilling buffalo race (Lumba Karabau), beauty pageant (Agak Asal), the symbolic 'Nakod Babulang', 'Tanding Bagandang', raft decoration and river rides, and the classic tug-of-war (Bintal Kalat).
Adding to the excitement, this year's edition will also include lively traditional song and music performances by ethnic groups from across Limbang Division, highlighting the spirit of inclusivity and cross-cultural appreciation.

'Govt offices must play National Month song'
PUTRAJAYA: All government offices must play this year's National Day and Malaysia Day theme song Malaysia Madani Rakyat Disantuni. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the "catchy, melodious and pleasant" song would ignite the spirit of the National Month. The song is composed by Datuk Mokhzani Ismail, arranged by young composer Affan Mazlan and performed by Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin. "I feel this year's theme song is truly magical and extraordinary. The song has also caught the attention and praise of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who said it was 'really, really good'," he said during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly here yesterday. Present were Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching; Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. The song made its official debut at the National Month Launch and Jalur Gemilang Flag-Raising Ceremony at Dataran Tanjung Emas in Muar, Johor on Sunday. Fahmi also requested that Radio Televisyen Malaysia, Bernama and other broadcasters play the theme song before and after main news bulletins, as well as in promotional videos to create a lively atmosphere and boost the spirit of patriotism throughout the National Month. "I am asking that the ministry play the theme song either in the lobby or as background music during official events. We will also propose to the Prime Minister's Department that this song be played at all official events attended by the prime minister during the National Month. "This will be discussed further with the department," he said. Fahmi said the Communications Ministry was making preparations to ensure the celebrations ran smoothly, including field activities, security, broadcasting facilities and performances. He said the ministry was resolving Internet connectivity issues as well as safety and traffic control aspects at the celebration venues. "A lot of preparations are underway and, so far, I am satisfied. "We are also planning special 'gimmicks' for both celebrations," he said. Sheila Majid pays tribute to parents for career
DATUK Sheila Majid has paid tribute to her parents, saying their blessing for her was the key to her 40 years as a singer, Mingguan Malaysia reported. She spoke of the early days when she 'strategised' in seeking her late father's approval. 'Though my father was not harsh, he was strict and very old school. If he said no, it meant no.'
