Fortnite, Epic Games Store may return to Android through Google Play Store
The timeline remains unclear, but once launched, it will make things easier for Android users to access Fortnite and other titles without sideloading process or pre-installation deals with phone makers required.
While speaking to The Verge, Google has reportedly said that it will appeal the decision again, likely bringing the case to the US Supreme Court. Google was quoted as saying: 'This decision will significantly harm user safety, limit choice, and undermine the innovation that has always been central to the Android ecosystem. Our top priority remains protecting our users, developers and partners, and maintaining a secure platform as we continue our appeal.'
Epic Games versus Google explained
The Epic Games v. Google case began in August 2020 when Epic deliberately bypassed Google Play's billing system by offering direct in-app payments in Fortnite. This violation led to Fortnite's removal from the Play Store and sparked a lawsuit, with Epic accusing Google of maintaining an illegal monopoly over Android app distribution and payments. Although Android technically allows sideloading, Epic claimed Google suppressed true competition through restrictive contracts with device makers and exclusive deals with developers.
While Google settled similar antitrust lawsuits with Match Group and US states—resulting in minor policy changes—Epic refused a financial settlement, seeking systemic reforms instead. In December 2023, a federal jury unanimously ruled in Epic's favour, finding Google guilty of maintaining a monopoly. Google was ordered to allow third-party app stores within the Play Store, end preferential revenue deals, and let developers direct users to alternative payment systems.
Google appealed the ruling, but on July 31, 2025, an appeals court upheld the verdict, marking a legal victory for Epic. This paves the way for the Epic Games Store—and likely Fortnite—to return to the Play Store without restrictions.
What is Fortnite
Fortnite is an online multiplayer game developed by Epic Games, released in 2017. It is most commonly associated with its battle royale mode, where up to 100 players compete on a single map until one player or team remains. The game also includes other modes, though the battle royale appears to be the most widely played. Its gameplay combines shooting mechanics with a unique building system that allows players to construct structures in real time.
In addition to core gameplay, Fortnite features frequent updates and limited-time events, including crossovers with entertainment franchises. These collaborations have helped the game maintain visibility, especially among younger users. While originally available through mainstream app stores, Fortnite was removed from both Apple's App Store and Google Play in 2020 following disputes over in-app payment systems. Since then, Android users have accessed it via sideloading, while iOS users have had no official method to install or update the game outside specific regions.

Brands press enter; GEO to show up more in AI searches
Agencies Brands are having to rethink traditional search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies to ensure visibility. Enter GEO. As users turn to AI chatbots for queries and traditional search engines like Google become increasingly AI-powered, startups such as Asva AI and Siftly are offering generative engine optimisation (GEO) and large language model (LLM) optimisation services to companies. GEO tweaks content to improve visibility on AI-powered search engines and generative AI models. Unlike conventional search engines, which rely on keywords, LLMs respond to prompts and generate curated answers. This is prompting brands to rethink their search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies to ensure visibility in AI responses. For instance, intimacy wellness brand MyMuse said it's seeing a 10% increase in its monthly searches on ChatGPT since it started focusing on GEO. Softly, a Y Combinator-backed startup founded in 2021, offers GEO services to business-to-business, business-to-customer and direct-to-customer companies. 'Every LLM relies on some form of search engine under the hood,' said Chalam PVS, cofounder and CEO of Siftly. 'When a user enters a prompt, the model often queries multiple search engines in real time, scans the results, interprets the content, and then summarises it, all within a few seconds.'He added that Siftly has analysed thousands of prompts and found that ChatGPT's results overlap only 61% with Google and 68% with Bing. 'To consistently show up on LLMs like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, you need platform-specific strategies — traditional SEO alone doesn't cut it,' he said. On platforms such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, brands gain visibility in two ways: through the actual answer generated and through the sources cited in those Asva AI is another startup helping companies improve their presence on these models.'We help brands get discovered, understand their LLM traffic, and recommend strategies on how they can improve it,' said Viren Inaniyan, cofounder of Asva are increasingly turning to LLMs because they want curated, direct responses instead of long lists of links. This growing adoption of generative AI is prompting companies to prepare for an AI-led discovery environment.'Many people still use Google search in India, but with the AI Overview feature giving a summary of the search query, most users don't scroll below,' said Aquibur Rahman, founder and CEO of Mailmodo, an email marketing platform. 'We are seeing an increase in search impressions but the click rate is decreasing.' In the last six months, Mailmodo has seen a 15% decline in clicks from Google search. To tackle this, Rahman has started optimising his website for LLMs. Similarly, wellness brand Kerala Ayurveda is now working to show up in AI-powered search results.
