WHO: Egypt is the first country in the world to achieve the gold standard for eliminating hepatitis C
The world celebrates World Hepatitis Day every year on July 28 to raise awareness about viral hepatitis, a liver inflammation often caused by a viral infection that progresses to severe liver disease and liver cancer.
The World Health Organization (WHO) stated in a statement that in 2023, Egypt became the first country in the world to achieve the gold standard on the path to eliminating hepatitis C, according to WHO standards.
On World Hepatitis Day 2025, the WHO urges communities, policymakers, and health authorities to commit to taking concerted action to eliminate hepatitis. Under the theme "Easy Steps to Eliminate Hepatitis," this year's campaign calls for urgent action to: remove financial, social, and public barriers—including stigma—that stand in the way of hepatitis elimination and liver cancer prevention; expand hepatitis services, including vaccination, safe injection practices, harm reduction, and, most importantly, testing and treatment, and integrate them into national health systems.
She said that tangible progress has been made in the region. In 2023, Egypt became the first country in the world to achieve the gold standard for eliminating hepatitis C, according to WHO standards. Through the "100 Million Healthy Lives" presidential initiative, more than 60 million people were screened for hepatitis, and more than 4.3 million received free treatment.
These efforts represent 70% of hepatitis C treatment in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and 35% of the global total, and have led to a 35% reduction in hepatitis-related deaths since 2018.
In December 2024, Egypt became the first country in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to achieve hepatitis B control status, having successfully reduced its prevalence to less than 5% among children aged 9 years and older and maintained coverage above 90%.

Up to 100 people killed and 382 injured in Gaza in a single day: Gaza Health Ministry
The Gaza Strip's Health Ministry announced on Monday that up to 100 people were killed and over 382 were injured in the past 24 hours due to ongoing strikes by Israel. Two major Israeli rights groups conclude war on Gaza is 'genocide' - War on Gaza
Rights groups B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel said on Monday that they had concluded the war in Gaza amounts to "genocide" against Palestinians, a first for Israeli NGOs. Both organisations are frequent critics of Israeli government policies, but the language in their reports issued on Monday was their most stark yet. "Nothing prepares you for the realisation that you are part of a society committing genocide. This is a deeply painful moment for us," B'Tselem executive director Yuli Novak told a news conference unveiling the two reports. "As Israelis and Palestinians who live here and witness the reality every day, we have a duty to speak the truth as clearly as possible," she said. "Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians." Israel's war in Gaza for the past 21 months has left much of the Gaza Strip, home to more than two million Palestinians, in ruins, and has killed at least 59,821 civilians, most of them women and children. All Gazans have been driven from their homes at least once since the start of the war, and UN agencies warn that residents face a growing threat of famine and malnutrition. The International Court of Justice, in an interim ruling in early 2024 in a case lodged by South Africa, found it "plausible" that the Israeli offensive had violated the UN Genocide Convention. The reports from B'Tselem -- one of Israel's best-known rights groups -- and Physicians for Human Rights Israel argue that the war's objectives go further. B'Tselem's report cites statements from senior politicians to illustrate that Israel "is taking coordinated action to intentionally destroy Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip". Physicians for Human Rights Israel's report documents what the group says is "the deliberate and systematic destruction of Gaza's healthcare system". Ghana Reports 1st Mpox-Linked Death
