Mum of two loses 17.7kg in four months after doctor wake-up call

A mum-of-two has explained how she lost more than 17kg using a fitness mobile app. An increasing number of fans are turning to an innovative health coaching app that's currently 60% off and swaps traditional calorie counting and restrictive eating in favour of a kinder method.
The Simple app uses AI to offer completely personalised nutritional advice as well as helping tweak daily habits to make small but sustainable changes. Jennifer lost the 17.7kg, or 2.8 stone, within just four months after being mortified by her holiday snaps. She explained: "After one of our trips last year, we came back home and started going through some photos and I realised just how much I had let myself go.
"I was absolutely horrified, to say the least. I had a doctors appointment coming up. I got on the scales for the first time in a long time and realised I weiged 205lbs, which... jaw to floor, I was mortified. I am only five foot one, so you can imagine."
The stark revelation during the routine visit served as Jennifer's reality check. She said: "My doctor went ahead and put on my chart that I was now considered morbidly obese, which scared me to death. You hear those words... the word morbid is very, very scary and having other comorbidities coming with that is very, very scary as well. I just decided I've got to do something.", reports the Mirror.
It wasn't her first attempt to get healthier, as she explained: "I have tried different kinds of workouts, different routines, different diets, and I don't stick to them. I was very sceptical from my past experiences and I also had an injury to my left knee. The first couple of days were so hard - I'm a stay-at-home mom, the kids are at home and want to snack all day. I would do the same. I was an emotional eater - if I was depressed, or anxious, I would immediately go to that."
Jennifer stumbled upon an advert on social media for the high-tech Simple app, which touted the advantages of intermittent fasting, the science behind much of Dr Michael Mosley's health advice. She decided to give it a whirl, explaining: "With the app it made everything so simple. I check in in the morning, there's reminders all the time, I can find out when my next fast is, when I should be eating, you get tips on a daily basis, different things that you can swap out.
The Simple App offers daily workouts, advice, dietary assessments and an AI assistant.

"One of my absolute favourite parts of the app is they have an integrated AI software where you can just ask questions. If you go to a restaurant, it takes out all your guesswork."
Jennifer attributes her weight loss to the app, which has seen her now lose the 'morbidly obese' label given to her by her doctor. She said: "This app has been absolutely life-changing for me. It just made everything so simple, I can actually do things I love to do, like a long walk with my kid."
The market for fitness apps exploded during the pandemic, as fitness fans tried to stay healthy at home. There are a few other apps out there doing similar things. These include Hevy, which lets you track workouts. Meanwhile, for food tracking the basic version of MyFitnessPal is free, with other features locked behind a paywall. The Simple app incorporates both these elements plus the AI assistant Avo and other features.
The Simple app is currently 60% off for all new signups when users use the code REACH60 at checkout. With the discount, this works out at one week for €3.99, down from €9.99, one month for €11.99 down from €29.99, or three months for €23.99, down from €59.99.
Avo, the app's AI coach, can look at the ingredients available in your fridge and whip up personalised recipe ideas, a feature that Simple user Chris credited for his massive 20kg weight drop, with the chef saying he 'loved the recipes. '
Elsewhere, Danielle saw a dramatic 27.8kg (48lbs) loss. She explained: "I give all credit to Simple. Having an AI coach right there, any time I needed, whatever time of day, helped me more than anything else."
The app has a 4.7-star average on Trustpilot, with 58% of those being a perfect 5 star review. One fan said: "I've tried multiple fasting apps, but this one truly stands out. Since using this app, I've noticed better energy levels, improved focus, and even weight loss. The educational content is also a great bonus, helping me understand the science behind fasting."
Another individual hailed it as the 'best decision they ever made', stating: "I finally have a healthy relationship with food, I've lost 15 pounds in my first month using this simple app, and it was surprisingly easy."
Another user praising the coaching element but admitted they found the app challenging to navigate: "I like the coach feature in this and the food logging by scanning or speaking but I find it confusing on how to use it. I feel it would be better to just have a calendar day click on that and have all that there."
A fourth customer labelled it as 'the best app', declaring: "So helpful, easy to scan meals to show ingredients. I have never stuck to anything so long before, it has now become a way of life."
Real Simple users are featured who have been compensated for their honest testimonials. Results may vary. You can read The Mirror's review of the Simple app here.
The Simple app is available on Android and iOS and is currently 60% off using the code REACH60 at checkout.

'I was left disfigured after 15-minute nap in my garden'

Jean Hill, a 67 year old retiree, was left battling severe sun poisoning after accidentally nodding off in the garden during the sweltering heat last May 1. She had hoped for nothing more than a bit of relaxation and reading in the sunshine when unexpectedly, a brief nap resulted in a chilling health scare. As she dozed with temperatures hitting the high 20s, her sunglasses slipped off, leading to a frightful shock when she awoke: one eye had swollen so extremely that it had blisters and white spots. Jean, despite her diligence with SPF 30 protection, faced a brutal bout of pain, later confirmed by doctors as sun poisoning. Compounding her troubles, shingles reared its ugly head, complete with an agonising rash, fever, and nausea – all outcomes of the viral aftermath that tormented her even almost two months post-incident. Speaking about the incident, Jean reflected on the lead-up to the ordeal: "It was coming up to the first Bank Holiday in May and the sun came out, so I got out my sun lounger. I'm not much of a sunbather - but I fell asleep for a short time." She detailed the harrowing effects the day following the mishap: "But the next day I woke up and couldn't open my eye and I was in so much pain. I was bright red, swollen and blistered and my face felt like it was on fire," reports the Mirror. "When I went to the hospital I was told the sun poisoning had caused shingles - I couldn't believe it. I was given antiviral tablets, creams and eye drops - but six weeks on, I'm still swollen and in pain. I had only been sitting outside for 10 or 15 minutes - people don't realise the danger of sunbathing." The following day, Jean was shocked by her own reflection, leading to a state of panic; her husband Timothy, 67, a retired handyman, remarked that her skin had become 'bright red', prompting them to dash to A&E. Jean, from Kidderminster, explained: "My face was so disfigured I could barely recognise myself. There were little white spots under my skin and it was burning." After being seen by a specialist and undergoing examination with sophisticated equipment, Jean's worst fears were confirmed; she had indeed developed shingles due to her immune system being weakened by sun poisoning. Jean shared how her GP attributed her aggressive sun poisoning to her recent sun exposure, which in turn triggered the shingles outbreak. Despite initial treatments, Jean had to go back for a follow-up visit where she was prescribed additional medication to combat persistent symptoms. She recounted: "I didn't go out for weeks and I had to wear sunglasses or close the curtains because my eyes were sensitive to the light. I'm still on medication now - I've still got blisters under my brows, and my forehead is inflamed. "I have nerve tablets for the pain and eye drops and night cream to soothe it. But it's still really painful, I feel like banging my head against the wall. The corner of my eye is the worst." Despite her suffering, Jean's doctors have given her hope that her condition will improve over time. She's now on a mission to raise awareness about the dangers of sun exposure, even if it's brief. Jean believes her ordeal began when she fell asleep and her glasses slipped off, leaving her eyes exposed to intense UV rays despite being closed. She cautioned: "There are people who go out not wearing sunglasses or a hat and lie on the beach with no sun cream on. I was careful and this happened to me - they don't realise the danger. "I never dreamt anything like this could or would happen. I don't want it to happen to anyone else." - Seek shade between 11am and 3pm. - Avoid getting sunburned. - Wear appropriate clothing and sunglasses. - Be extra cautious with children. - Always use sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

Influencer Jennifer Wrynne shares cancer diagnosis months after giving birth

Top milliner Jennifer Wrynne has announced she is battling cancer – just three months after she welcomed her fourth child. The influencer gave birth to Amelia Rose three months ago. Jennifer and husband Colm also have three other children under five - Alex, four, and twins Isabella and Amber, two. The 36-year-old shocked fans by revealing doctors have diagnosed her with breast cancer after she found a lump "by accident" while showering – but said they had caught her diagnosis early. Posting on Instagram, Jennifer wrote: "Breast cancer. A journey I never imagined I'd be going on… but I'm soaking up every cuddle before it begins. "The past few days have been a complete blur. Everything has happened so quickly — and I'm heartbroken to share that I've been diagnosed with breast cancer. "I'm nervous, scared, and overwhelmed… but more than anything, I'm grateful. Grateful that I found the lump. Grateful it was caught early. Grateful to Nurse Edel in my local GP who acted so quickly. Grateful that it's treatable. "Grateful for the incredible care I've received already. And most of all - grateful it's me and not one of my children, family, or friends. My first step is surgery this week, followed by treatment in the weeks ahead. It won't be easy but I'm feeling strong and positive. "I'll keep you updated as I go, but in the meantime, please do me one small favour: check your breasts. I'm embarrassed to admit that, at 36 years old, I had never checked mine. "I only found the lump by complete accident in the shower. I was so lucky. Early detection really does save lives." The news comes just months after she announced the arrival of her fourth child, in March, and just one year after she married her long-term partner Colm in Lough Rynn Castle, in Co Leitrim. Her announcement was met with an outpouring of support from her followers and friends. Miriam O'Callaghan took to Instagram to share: "So sorry to hear this Jennifer but so happy also to hear you caught it early. You're of course now going to overcome it and emerge even stronger from it than ever before. Sending you so much love and luck xxx." While 2FM star Doireann Garrihy wrote: "Sending you so much love Jennifer".

Urgent warning as Ireland's most common painkiller linked to killer illness

A stark alert has been sounded over a widely-used medication in Ireland that could be stealthily inflicting damage on your liver. The tablet, commonly taken for ailments ranging from headaches to muscle aches, is typically safe if the advised dose isn't surpassed. Kingston University's senior lecturer in pharmacy practice, Dipa Kamdar, cautioned that even slightly exceeding the recommended amount of this drug can pose "extremely dangerous" risks to liver health. While many might think alcohol consumption is the main culprit behind liver harm, Dipa highlighted several "often overlooked" daily practices that could lead to grave outcomes like cirrhosis – irreversible liver scarring – or outright liver failure. She pointed out that indulging in high-sugar or high-saturated fat foods, smoking, and insufficient exercise are all potential pathways to these perilous conditions, as is the overconsumption of paracetamol, reports the Mirror. "Despite its remarkable resilience – and even its ability to regenerate – the liver is not indestructible," Dipa penned in The Conversation. "One of the challenges with liver disease is that it can be a silent threat. In its early stages, it may cause only vague symptoms like constant fatigue or nausea. "As the damage advances, more pronounced indicators can appear. One of the most noticeable is jaundice, where the skin and the whites of the eyes turn yellow." The WHO indicate a 452% increase in liver deaths between 1971 and 2012 in Ireland. Live disease is also one of the most common illnesses in Ireland. The breakdown of paracetamol in the liver generates a toxic by-product named NAPQI, normally counteracted by glutathione, a protective agent. However, excessive dosages mean the body becomes swamped with toxins, potentially overwhelming the liver. Dipa issued a stark caution: "In an overdose, glutathione stores become depleted, allowing NAPQI to accumulate and attack liver cells," this potentially causing acute liver failure, which may lead to death. "Even small overdoses, or combining paracetamol with alcohol, can increase the risk of serious harm. Always stick to the recommended dose and speak to a doctor if you find yourself needing pain relief regularly." There's been a raft of studies concerning the risks associated with paracetamol consumption, some of which ties even minimal doses to liver failure. Writing for The Conversation, University of Oxford's honorary senior research fellow Andrew Moore highlighted: "Paracetamol is known to cause liver failure in overdose, but it also causes liver failure in people taking standard doses for pain relief. The risk is only about one in a million, but it is a risk."
