Ancient statue returns to Turkey from US 65 years later

Ammon News - Turkey has repatriated an ancient statue believed to depict Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius from the United States as part of efforts to recover antiquities illegally removed from the country, the government announced on Saturday.
The bronze statue, smuggled from the ancient city of Boubon now the province of Burdur in southwest Turkey in the 1960s, was returned to Turkey after 65 years, according to Turkish officials.
'It was a long struggle. We were right, we were determined, we were patient, and we won,' Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Ersoy said.
'We brought the 'Philosopher Emperor' Marcus Aurelius back to the land where he belongs,' he added.
This unique artefact, once exhibited in the United States, was repatriated to Turkey based on scientific analyses, archival documents and witness statements, added the minister.
'Through the combined power of diplomacy, law, and science, the process we conducted with the New York Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the US Homeland Security Investigations Unit is more than just a repatriation; it is a historical achievement,' Ersoy said.
'Marcus Aurelius's return to our country is a concrete result of our years-long pursuit of justice.'
The headless statue had been on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art from April to July, before its return to Turkey.
Ersoy said Turkey was determined to protect all its cultural heritage that has been smuggled out.

Jordan condemns storming of al-Aqsa by Israeli minister

Ammon News - The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs on Wednesday strongly condemned the storming of the al-Aqsa Mosque/al-Haram al-Sharif by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, under the protection of the Israeli occupation police, describing the incident as a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, a rejected escalation, and an unacceptable provocation. Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Sufian Qudah reaffirmed Jordan's absolute rejection and firm condemnation of the continued incursions by Ben-Gvir, as well as the Israeli police's facilitation of repeated violations of the sanctity of the al-Aqsa Mosque/al-Haram al-Sharif. The Ministry also warned of the dangerous consequences of such provocative and illegal violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, urging Israel to immediately halt all such acts, including those by Ben-Gvir, which the Ministry said reflect the extremist policies of the Israeli government. These policies, it noted, serve to escalate tensions further across the occupied West Bank, including through raids on Palestinian cities and infringements on Islamic and Christian holy sites. The Ministry reiterated that the entire 144-dunum area of the al-Aqsa Mosque is an exclusive place of worship for Muslims, and that the Jerusalem Endowments and al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, under the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and Holy Places, is the sole legal authority responsible for administering the site and regulating access.

U.S. Senate confirms Jeanine Pirro as top federal prosecutor for D.C.

Ammon News - The U.S. Senate on Saturday confirmed former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia in a 50-45 vote along party lines. The 74-year-old Trump loyalist previously served as a judge and prosecutor in Westchester County, New York and has been interim U.S. attorney since May. Trump yanked Martin's nomination after a key Republican senator said he could not support him due to Martin's outspoken support for rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Martin now serves as the Justice Department's pardon attorney. Last month, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to send Pirro's nomination to the Senate floor after Democrats walked out to protest Emil Bove's nomination to become a federal appeals court judge. Pirro, a 1975 graduate of Albany Law School, has significantly more courtroom experience than Martin, who had never served as a prosecutor or tried a case before taking office in January. She was elected as a judge in New York's Westchester County Court in 1990 before serving three terms as the county's elected district attorney.
