Ahead of monsoon session, Congress remains indecisive about CLP leader

Time of India2 days ago
Chandigarh: Yet another session of Haryana assembly is likely to pass without the leader of opposition as the Congress party remains indecisive about its choice of the Congress legislature party (CLP) head.
Haryana assembly is scheduled to convene for the monsoon session from Aug 22. This will be the third session of the current House in which the main opposition party, the Congress, will remain without a leader.
The party has also not announced district and state-level executives so far. The issue remains unresolved for over a decade now. During this period, Haryana witnessed three Lok Sabha and three assembly elections.
Except for the AICC-nominated state presidents and their handful of executives, there was no district or block executive on the ground.
While the party had failed to garner sufficient numbers in the 2014 assembly elections for the appointment of the leader of opposition,
Bhupinder Singh Hooda
held the post between 2019 and 2024. In the current session of the assembly, despite having 37 MLAs, the Congress has not been able to name the leader of the opposition.
Similarly, the party has also failed to announce the district-level executives. According to senior AICC leaders, including B K Hariparsad – party general secretary and in charge of Haryana, the district congress committees were supposed to be declared by July 31. Same was the case for the announcement of the state Congress president and the CLP leader.
Surprisingly, the delay in announcements is despite the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, giving clear directions in June to ensure the completion of the process by the first week of July.
"We have completed the entire process and the district Congress committee lists will be out any day during this week. This will be followed by a decision on the CLP leader and other office bearers," said Hariparsad.

UP CM Adityanath, BSP chief Mayawati express grief over Satyapal Malik's death

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday expressed grief over the death of Satyapal Malik, the former governor of Jammu and Kashmir. In a post on X in Hindi, CM Adityanath said, "The demise of former governor Satyapal Malik ji is extremely sad. Humble tribute! My condolences are with the bereaved family. I pray to God to grant salvation to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this sorrow. Om Shanti!" Condoling the death of Malik, BSP chief Mayawati in a post on X in Hindi said, "The news of the death of Shri Satyapal Malik, who was the governor of many states, including Jammu and Kashmir, today is very sad. My deepest condolences to his bereaved family and all his supporters. May nature give them the strength to bear this sorrow." Malik (79) died on Tuesday at a hospital in New Delhi after a prolonged illness, his personal staff said. He was 79. Malik, who had also held the positions of governor of Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya, and Odisha, besides being a member of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in his long political career, died at 1.12 pm at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi. He was in the ICU of the hospital for a long time, getting treatment for various ailments, the staff said. In his gubernatorial role in Jammu and Kashmir, Malik oversaw the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019. Coincidentally, he took his last breath on the sixth anniversary of the Centre's move. Malik attracted a lot of controversy after alleging that he was offered a bribe to clear files of two major projects in Jammu and Kashmir and questioned the BJP-led central government over issues related to farmers and the Pulwama terror attack, among others.

India actively discussing trade pact with US, say minister

India is actively involved in the discussions with the US on the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with an aim to expand trade and investment, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said India-US bilateral trade agreement negotiations were launched in March 2025. The US team is visiting India from August 25 to hold the next round of trade talks. "To safeguard the interests of farmers and the domestic industry, international trade negotiations allow for the inclusion of sensitive, negative, or exclusion lists -- categories of goods on which limited or no tariff concessions are granted," he said. Live Events In addition, in case of surge in imports and injury to the domestic industry, a country is allowed to take recourse to trade remedial measures such as anti-dumping and safeguards on imports. During 2021-25, the US was India's largest trading partner. The US accounts for about 18 per cent of India's total goods exports, 6.22 per cent in imports, and 10.73 per cent in bilateral trade. With America, India had a trade surplus (the difference between imports and exports) of USD 35.32 billion in goods in 2023-24. It was USD 41 billion in 2024-25 and USD 27.7 billion in 2022-23. In 2024-25, bilateral trade between India and the US reached USD 186 billion. India exported USD 86.5 billion in goods while importing USD 45.3 billion. In a separate reply, he said the US did not accept India's request for consultations under an agreement of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) concerning American tariffs on steel, aluminium, and related derivative products, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. The US has maintained that these measures were introduced on the grounds of national security, Prasada said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. India, however, considers these measures to be safeguard actions that should have been notified and subjected to consultations under the WTO's Agreement on Safeguards (AoS). "India has accordingly reserved its right to suspend substantially equivalent concessions (right to impose equal trade measures in response) due to the US's non-compliance with its obligations under the AoS," he said. In another reply, the minister said India has not taken any decision to suspend or restrict trade or tourism activities with Turkey and Azerbaijan. However, the import from Turkey has declined from USD 3.78 billion in 2023-24 to USD 2.99 billion in 2024-25. The major items imported from Turkey during 2024-25 include Petroleum Crude, Gold, Inorganic Chemicals, Granite, Natural Stones and Aircraft & Spacecraft parts. The major items of import from Azerbaijan during 2024-25 include Finished Leather, Medical and Scientific Instruments, Raw Hides and Skins, Fruits/Vegetables Seeds and Hand Tools, Cutting Tools of Metals.
