NWU Vaal FC and VESA clash in local derby
This much-anticipated match will take place at NWU Vaal grounds on Saturday (3 May).
These two sides will compete in Stream B.
To date, NWU Vaal FC was relegated from the GDL Stream A last season after finishing at the bottom of the log. However, VESA has been campaigning in Stream B for quite some time now. As things stand, Resa is the only team in Sedibeng that still holds on to their Stream A status. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Tebello Kheswa, who is the Head of Development, was confident that NWU Vaal will bounce back to where they belong, which is Stream A.
He told Sedibeng Ster Sport it is a work in progress and it is one game at a time until the end of the season.
In fact, last season, NWU Vaal FC competed with Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United, among other highly competitive teams in Stream A. Kheswa said it was not easy competing against those teams, taking into consideration their level of play. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that it was difficult to cope with the demanding schedule, especially travelling.
Back to the local derby, Kheswa was confident that his side would walk away with three points.
'It is not going to be an easy game, but we are more than ready because we want to play in Stream A. This is where we belong, regardless of our challenges. I think this time around we will be ready to compete against those high-profile academies,' he concluded.

Celebrating Sharpeville's soccer supermom
SHARPEVILLE.- With August around the corner, Sedibeng Ster Sport takes a look at women who play a huge role in sports in the Vaal. August is Women's Month, celebrating the strength of ordinary women in the community for their outstanding contributions in various fields. Orlando Pirates midfield striker Relebohile Mofokeng's mother, Naome, is one of the women who deserves flowers for the role she plays in her son's football career. When 'Rele' was still young, playing for a local amateur soccer team, Celeb Youth Academy in Sharpeville, Naome used to come to watch him. This was long before it became fashionable for mothers or parents to get involved in their children's football careers. Unlike others, Naome didn't wait for her son to play for these so-called elite development academies to support him. She supported the boy while he was still playing on the dusty soccer grounds. Sedibeng Ster Sport still has memories of her running up and down the touchline when Rele was only 12 years old, playing at George Thabe Stadium or James and Pepsi soccer grounds. She was always there, not only to watch him, but to also support the rest of the team. She is passionate about football. The truth is she didn't only show interest in his son's football career when he played for Orlando Pirates, but long before Rele became a household name in South African football. We take a bow, Mrs Mofokeng, you deserve flowers. She was always there since Rele's father, Sechaba Mofokeng, at the time, was also an active soccer player, playing in the First Division League. Relebohile's parents launched the Relebohile Mofokeng Foundation to help those from disadvantaged backgrounds. They hosted the 1st Annual Relebohile Mofokeng Tournament, which came to an end last weekend in his hometown in Sharpeville. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Naome said that apart from being her son's biggest supporter, she is passionate about football. 'I love football, and grew up in the football community. I support every child who is involved in sports in the community,' she said. Sedibeng Ster Sport will continue to look for other women who have contributed to the development of sports within the Vaal community.

This Sebokeng-born youngster has been featuring in some of Chiefs' pre-season matches, and Sedibeng Ster Sport has been told that coach Nasreddine Nabi is impressed with his performance. Hlongwane was promoted to the Chiefs senior team after his impressive performance for the Chiefs DSTV Diski Challenge (DDC) team. He also stunned many when he scored a brace against Magesi in the Carling Black Label exhibition match in December. Much was said and written about Hlongwane after this performance. Not only that, he was rewarded for his outstanding performance with the Man of the Match Award. This is the same performance that caught the attention of Nabi, and Chiefs offered this youngster a professional contract. Hlongwane started his amateur football career playing for the Nale Development Academy in Vanderbijlpark. Before he joined Chiefs' development teams, Nale Development Academy recommended him to the U17 National Technical Team. He was only 14 years of age when he joined the Chiefs' development. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, a source who is close to the boy at Naturena said Nabi is happy with Hlongwane's performance. The good thing about the coach is that he believes in the youngsters, and Hlongwane won't struggle to fit in with his plans.
