Mleiha Club transfer members to Zewail City to partake in AI prog

The program is led by Mohammed Sultan Al Khasouni Al Ketbi, the Chairman of the Mleiha Club, along with several Emirati members and supervisors. It aims to blend theory with real-world application, offering participants a chance to enhance their skills at one of the leading scientific institutions in the Arab world. This initiative is an excellent example of how summer activities can evolve to meet the UAE's vision of nurturing young talent through technology. It also reflects the goals of the Sharjah Sports Council, guided by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to invest in the education of future generations. The program began with the summer activities launched on June 30th, set to continue until July 31st. Initially held in Mleiha, Sharjah, this program expands to Egypt to provide participants with a more enriching educational experience in a country known for its scientific contributions, especially through the legacy of Dr. Ahmed Zewail. The event took place at the Sustainable Development Center in Zewail City, located in 6th of October City, and was attended by Professor Dr. Mustafa Moussa Badawi, who heads the center. He expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with the Mleiha Club and emphasized the importance of building educational partnerships in the Arab world, particularly in the growing field of artificial intelligence. The first day of the workshop focused on introducing participants to the basics of artificial intelligence (AI). This included understanding data, how to classify information, and make predictions. Participants also explored practical uses of AI in educational tools like Teachable Machine and Pictoblox. They learned how to design a smart application using a platform called MIT App Inventor. The day was full of interactions, and participants enjoyed building and showcasing their innovative projects. They even had a chance to tour Zewail City of Science and Technology, a prominent scientific institution. On the second day, participants continued their exciting journey by working on their projects with creative tools such as ChatGPT, which helps turn text into images, and learned how to interact with modern AI applications. The event concluded with final presentations and the awarding of certificates, celebrating the hard work and creativity displayed over the two days. Al Khasouni highlighted that launching the Artificial Intelligence Workshop at Zewail City marks a significant achievement in the club's summer activities. It reflects the vision of UAE leadership and the efforts of the Sharjah government to invest in knowledge and equip young people with future skills. He noted that this workshop follows an earlier program called "Our Vacation is Different," which aimed to provide training and learning experiences for youth. Now, it has developed further by taking place at a top scientific institution, demonstrating a commitment to applying learned skills in real-life scenarios. This partnership with Zewail City has been essential in delivering this program to the Emirati community. Al Khasouni expressed his happiness with the enthusiasm and engagement shown by participants during the first day. The workshops and educational tools helped deepen their understanding of AI concepts and connect these ideas with their everyday lives and future goals. He also emphasized that this initiative reflects the Mleiha Club's philosophy of blending sports, culture, and science to build a generation capable of innovation and excellence.

Dubai scientists advance precision medicine with Arab pangenome study

In a groundbreaking development for healthcare and genetic research, scientists at Dubai's Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) have published the first-ever Arab Pangenome Reference—a major leap forward in precision medicine for the region. The research, featured in the prestigious journal Nature Communications, provides a vital foundation for personalised healthcare tailored to Arab populations. Using advanced DNA sequencing from 53 individuals of diverse Arab heritage living in the UAE, researchers identified over 110 million new DNA base pairs, nearly nine million small genetic differences, and more than 235,000 larger structural variations unique to Arabs—many of which had never been documented before. The study supports the UAE's National Genome Strategy, launched in 2023 to push the frontiers of personalised and preventive medicine. One notable finding was a duplicated gene called TAF11L5, found in Arab individuals but absent in global genetic databases. Scientists believe this could offer new insights into disease risk and treatment response. Researchers say the Arab Pangenome will help close long-standing gaps in global genomic data and enable the development of more accurate diagnostic tools and therapies for the region. The project also developed 'PanScan', a bioinformatics tool to support more complex analysis of human pangenomes. Although not the central focus of the study, PanScan enables researchers to detect gene duplications, novel DNA changes, and complex DNA structures. Now publicly available on GitHub, a common resource used by scientists worldwide, the tool was created to support the Arab Pangenome Reference and similar efforts globally. Scientists at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, have published the first Arab Pangenome Reference, marking a major milestone in both regional and global genomic research. The study, released in… — Dubai Media Office (@DXBMediaOffice) July 24, 2025
