Dodgers Predicted to Replace Max Muncy With $70M All-Star in Blockbuster Trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers got some bad news at third base just as it seemed their veteran starter was turning a corner.
After opening the year in a pronounced slump, Max Muncy began wearing prescription goggles and seemed to have unlocked some marked improvement at the plate. He had been hitting .308 with 12 homers and 48 RBI, the most in the majors, in the past 46 games before going down with a knee injury.
Muncy's now expected to be out for at least six weeks and the Dodgers could be looking for an external addition before it's too late. Zachary Howell of ClutchPoints predicted that would mean bringing in Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon in a blockbuster trade that would offload pitcher Dustin May in exchange.
"Los Angeles does not need much from McMahon, but he is a far better option at third than Tommy Edman," Howell noted. "Making the most of him in their push for back-to-back titles could push them over the top. ... A deal like this shows faith in (manager Dave) Roberts and his roster while giving the Rockies a future ace that can lead them back to relevancy."

If the Dodgers do swing a deal to bring in McMahon, it would demonstrate their faith that he will be a long-term infield option. He is in the fourth year of a $70 million contract and is owed $16 million in both 2026 and 2027.
It would also signal that the Dodgers believe McMahon can return to the All-Star form he demonstrated last year. So far this season he is slashing just .211/.312/.376, figures that are far below his career averages across the board.
But if the Dodgers do see their division rival's infielder as a necessary upgrade with Muncy sidelined, this proposed one-for-one deal could be enough to bring him to Los Angeles.

Lakers assistant Scott Brooks advocated for signing of Deandre Ayton
There are quite a few people who are at least somewhat skeptical about the Los Angeles Lakers' signing of center Deandre Ayton. He had agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday, June 29, and he reportedly left Portland on bad terms. However, it seems the Lakers are hopeful that Ayton will be the true starting-level center they have been looking for. He's a proven rim-runner and lob threat, and he can also post up and hit the mid-range jumper, which should allow him to do well alongside Luka Doncic. Advertisement Lakers assistant coach Scott Brooks was an assistant with the Trail Blazers during the 2023-24 season, which was Ayton's first season in Portland. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Brooks actually advocated that L.A. sign Ayton. "Ayton is said to have had another advocate within the Lakers' ranks recommending that L.A. sign him: Former Blazers-turned-Lakers assistant coach Scott Brooks." This seems to carry plenty of weight, as Brooks would know first-hand if Ayton is truly a malcontent or simply someone who needs to be in the right situation. The seven-footer has career averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. While the former No. 1 overall pick hasn't quite lived up to his potential, he has an excellent opportunity to improve his reputation and value this coming season while contributing to a winning team that finished third in the Western Conference just a couple of months ago. Ayton reportedly signed a two-year deal that will pay him $8.1 million during the 2025-26 season. That deal has a player option for the 2026-27 campaign.
