Alexander Zverev Enters Toronto Masters Semifinals, Will Face...

Last Updated: Alexander Zverev reached his 21st Masters 1000 semifinal by defeating Alexei Popyrin 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 at the ATP Toronto Masters. Alexander Zverev reached his 21st Masters 1000 semifinal on Monday by ending Alexei Popyrin's Canadian title defence with a 6-7 (8/10), 6-4, 6-3 victory at the ATP Toronto Masters. The final game, with Zverev serving at 5-3, was interrupted by shouts from an unruly fan who was subsequently removed by security. The distraction broke a streak of 14 consecutive points on serve, causing Zverev to double-fault when he resumed serving. He concluded the evening with a sharp volley winner at the net on his first match point. Zverev secured his 40th win of the year in just over two and a half hours. The world number three had won the tournament in 2017 but had not progressed past the quarterfinals in Canada since. 'After losing the first set, I had to remind myself that we were both playing well," said the holder of seven Masters trophies. 'I made one or two mistakes at the end of the first set, but it was a high-level match. I felt that if I kept playing well, I would get my chances — and I did. I can't complain about the second and third sets." Zverev will compete in the unusually scheduled Thursday final against three-time semi-finalist Karen Khachanov, who defeated young American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 7-6 (7/3). 'It was a very close, competitive match," Khachanov said. 'I had to come back from some tough situations. How you handle that mentally is important. I was glad to close it out in the second set. I had to try and not give him the opportunity to step in and attack; that's what I did today." Zverev has won five of the seven matches he has played against Khachanov. Popyrin and Zverev battled throughout the evenly matched 71-minute opening set, leading to a tiebreaker. Zverev failed to convert on two winning opportunities, but Popyrin succeeded on his second chance with a net cord winner that left his opponent stranded at the baseline. The German started to turn the tide in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead before the Australian levelled at 4-all. Zverev pulled ahead to tie the match at one set apiece, breaking for 6-4 as Popyrin sent a volley wide. The top seed began the final set with a 3-0 lead, advancing to the tournament's final four at the pre-US Open event. Popyrin remains winless against Zverev, having lost all four of their encounters. view comments First Published: August 05, 2025, 13:37 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Secret Behind Mohammed Siraj's Stamina Reveale: 'Rare Biryani, No Pizzas Or...'

Last Updated: Mohammed Siraj's brother has revealed the secret behind his stamina that is being praised all around the world. Mohammed Siraj's yorker that got Gus Atkinson clean-bowled and sealed India's win in the Oval Test to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was bowled at 143 kmph. It was one of Siraj's fastest balls in the series, and it was clear that the pacer didn't care that this was his 1113th ball of the rubber, the most for anyone. Siraj was the only pacer across the two teams to bowl in every innings available to his team, and though he had moments and overs of low, underwhelming performances, he never relented in his efforts. When he got it right, the ball swung both ways, seamed unpredictably off the pitch, and gave no time for the batters to react. He made it talk with an 80-overs-old ball, which is rare and unprecedented, and although some of it was down to sheer luck, Siraj made the most of it, perhaps more than anyone in his position could. In an interview after India's win, Siraj's brother, Mohammed Ismail, revealed that it was all due to his work on fitness. 'Yes, absolutely. He focuses a lot on fitness. He avoids junk food and maintains a disciplined diet. Even living in Hyderabad, he rarely eats biryani, maybe occasionally, and only if it's homemade. But no pizzas or fast food, he's very disciplined about his body," Ismail told India Today. After the fourth day of the Test, bowling coach Morne Morkel had said that before the match began, the team was concerned about Siraj's physical and mental well-being due to his excessive workload, but the pacer rebuffed them immediately, saying he wanted to win it for India. And he did. '100%, he never gives up, even when he wasn't selected for the Champions Trophy squad, he didn't let it demotivate him. Instead, he worked even harder. He hit the gym, focused on his fitness, and practiced hard every day — morning and evening. He identified what was missing and fixed it," Ismail added. Siraj ended the series as the highest wicket-taker with 23 scalps and won the Player of the Match for the Oval Test. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mohammed Siraj Called 'Pantomime Villain' After Heroic Show: 'People Love To Hate Him'

Last Updated: Mohammed Siraj's stellar performance in the 5th Test against England led to a 2-2 series draw, taking 23 wickets. Mohammed Siraj has become the toast of Indian cricket following his gust-busting spell in the 5th Test that concluded with a remarkable win for the tourists and a 2-2 conclusion to their five-match series with England. Siraj finished the tour with 23 wickets and kept hitting the headlines with his performance and histrionics. He took a six-fer at Edgbaston, a five-over at Oval and then had skirmishes with England batters including Ben Duckett. He was punished for his aggressive send-off to Duckett with the two brushing shoulders. He was left crestfallen after becoming the 10th Indian wicket to fall in the unluckiest of fashion at Lord's that sealed a thrilling England win. He dropped a catch of Harry Brook on the fourth day of the 5th Test which, again, left him devastated. Brook went on to score a century – an innings that seemed to have put England in the driving seat in the hunt of another 350-plus chase. Monday was Siraj's redemption as he starred in India's defense of 35 runs on the final day as the visitors knocked down the remaining four wickets to ensure the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ended on level terms. And former England captain Nasser Hussain has praised Siraj, drawing comparisons with the legendary Shane Warne who was loved and hated by fans in equal measure. Daily Mail. 'He's a born entertainer, but crucially he's got all the other attributes you need at the highest level: heart, passion, and ultimately skill," he added. Hussain then shed light on how Siraj has polished his skill to outfox the best batters of this generation. 'He's (Siraj) gone from being a hit-the-deck bowler using wobble seam to trap people LBW – as he did with Joe Root – to one who has developed outswing so big that Shubman Gill wasn't interested in taking the second new ball," he wrote. Then, there is the fabulous yorker, such as the one to Crawley late on day three. He went to it again just before midday, knowing that Gus Atkinson was trying to hit him over midwicket for a second six that would have tied the game, nailing it under the most immense pressure," he added. Hussain said the series was the best since the Ashes 2005 which England won in dramatic fashion. 'The fifth morning was so dramatic that you really couldn't script it, concluding the best series I've seen since 2005," he wrote. view comments First Published: News cricket Mohammed Siraj Called 'Pantomime Villain' After Heroic Show: 'People Love To Hate Him' Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
