As organizations continue to invest heavily in next-generation technologies, chief information officers (CIOs) are facing growing pressure to demonstrate the commercial impact of their spending. From AI pilots to security optimization, technology leaders must balance investment with genuine value creation. The traditional role of enabling business strategy is evolving into something more fundamental—helping to shape the future of their organizations.
Every year, my company takes the temperature of the CIO community to understand their ambitions and pressures. In 2024, CIOs were evaluating the potential of next-generation technologies. This year, our report found a shift from exploration to outcomes. Eighty-five percent of our respondents said there's mounting pressure for "technology to demonstrate tangible business impact" within their organizations. And this goes beyond straightforward returns on investment (ROI), with 95% investing in technology to create entirely new revenue streams to drive business growth over the next year.
For CIOs facing this new mandate, navigating the path ahead might appear challenging. Here are four tips to help avoid pitfalls, maximize value and embrace the potential of technology:
Focus on value creation.
Advancements in technology, including AI, machine learning and the Internet of Things, have the potential to unlock countless new business opportunities, whether by increasing efficiencies, improving customer experiences or even unlocking new markets. Still, the real challenge for CIOs is ensuring these technologies deliver the promised returns.
To stay ahead, leaders need to align tech advancement with strategic business goals, constantly evaluating ROI or growth potential. The era of experimentation is over; today, businesses are looking for demonstrable value. When it comes to next-generation technologies, a laser focus is required to ensure business needs are met and investments are driving the organization forward.
Avoid the security spending black hole.
Cybersecurity remains a fundamental issue for all corporate businesses. Gartner predicted that this year, cybersecurity spending will increase by more than 15% and reach $212 billion. Despite high levels of spending, our research shows that 51% of respondents lack security solutions that meet their organization's needs. With most tech leaders juggling limited time and resources alongside an increasing need to demonstrate ROI on security spend, it raises the question: How do they ensure security investments are truly effective?
To avoid a security spending black hole, businesses must streamline their approach. Instead of adding more tools and layers to security solutions, tech leaders who spend smarter and tailor their support will achieve better protection while maximizing the impact of their investments.
Evaluate whether partnerships are delivering.
Partnerships play a pivotal role in the long-term success of technology implementation and management, but not all partnerships are created equal. A significant 59% of CIOs told us the solutions their vendors offer are often too complex and difficult for them to effectively manage.
To fully feel the benefits, tech leaders need to develop and strengthen partnerships that align with business objectives. Whether working with individual vendors or managed service providers, ensure you're working with the right partner to access solutions that will increase effectiveness and unlock value.
Tackle the tech sustainability challenge—and win.
At a time when environmental, social and governance (ESG) is at risk of being undermined, technology's role in driving sustainability has become even more crucial. Tech leaders must focus on the big picture and let sustainable tech investments prove their ethical and commercial value.
It's already paying off for those who do. Research from KPMG found that 70% of U.S. CEOs saw improvements in their companies' financial performance from their ESG efforts. Moreover, our report found that 91% of CIOs have seen financial benefits from integrating environmental technologies. These can also enhance business resilience and help meet immediate and long-term sustainability targets.
The CIO role is no longer centered around simple IT management; it is core to business leadership. With the pressure to deliver tangible results ever-growing, CIOs who focus on value creation, strategically manage security investments, continually evaluate partnerships and embrace the potential of ESG initiatives can see the rewards. When balanced correctly, CIOs can unlock the true value of technology and propel their organizations toward sustained growth, innovation and long-term corporate success.

(TSX:BB) has been a part of this change for many years, having developed its embedded machine-to-machine connected technology to become an invaluable player in the field. Today, this AI stock is finally gearing up for sustained revenue and earnings growth. Let's take a look. In its most recent transformation, Blackberry has taken steps to improve its balance sheet, cash flows, and cost structure. These steps included splitting the company up into three divisions – QNX, secure communications, and licensing — and selling its Cylance cybersecurity business. The restructuring also included taking more than $150 million out of its cost structure and initiating a share buyback program. Blackberry's business is made up of three main segments, QNX, secure communications, and licensing. The QNX segment is the one that we hear most about and is the primary focus. Blackberry's QNX provides critical software for embedded, machine-to-machine connected systems. It's used in automotive applications, as well as medical devices, industrial controls, and robotics. The secure communications segment specializes in secure communications software for enterprises. Some of Blackberry's secure communications clients include government agencies, financial institutions, and essential service providers. It's true that many investors have grown skeptical with regard to Blackberry. But the list of reasons to like this AI stock is growing. For example, the QNX segment has grown its revenues from $178 million in 2022 to $236 million in 2025 – that's a 33% increase over this time period. And its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin stands at a healthy 25%. Also, Blackberry's QNX is in more than 250 million vehicles worldwide and it's in strong demand. In fact, QNX has more than $865 million in backlog, which will make its way to the income statement over the next few years. Backlog was $460 million in 2022. In the secure communications segment, revenue is stable, with a 19% EBITDA margin and solid cash flows. Along with revenue improvements, Blackberry is also seeing improvements to its balance sheet and cash flows. And this is what takes Blackberry stock to a new level, both in terms of returns and risk. As we can see from the company's latest quarter, Blackberry's cash flows and balance sheet have strengthened considerably. In the most recent quarter, the company's operating cash usage came in at $18 million, which is a low point. Looking to the full year, Blackberry expects operating cash flow of a positive $35 million. This compares to prior years of negative operating cash flow. As for its balance sheet, Blackberry has $410 million in cash, with no debt maturities until 2029. This has given the company flexibility to invest in organic and inorganic growth, and to buy back shares if they present a good opportunity. All of this will drive shareholder value in the short and long term. Two things will likely happen as a result of this. Firstly, Blackberry's stock will trade higher because of the earnings and cash flow lift. Secondly, the stock will likely get re-rated and investors will assign it a higher multiple. Plus, most lenders use automated systems to review applications, and underwriters look at your credit profile, income, debt, and financial history, not the timestamp on your submission. Here's what you need to know about when you should apply for a loan. It's not so much about the day you submit your loan application but more about how ready you are and what your finances look like when you apply. Here's what actually makes a difference: Your credit score: This is one of the biggest factors lenders use to gauge how risky you are as a borrower. Your debt-to-income ratio: Lenders want to see that you're not overextended financially and won't have trouble repaying the loan. How complete your application is: Missing information or documents can slow things down. Your responsiveness: If a lender asks for follow-up info, delays on your end can hold up approval. In other words, your loan experience will depend far more on what's in your application than when you submit it. Learn More: To be fair, some people may run into slower service if they apply for loans in person on Mondays, but that's more of a customer service bottleneck than a lender-wide pattern. Support teams may take longer to respond due to increased call volume on Mondays, internal team meetings or scheduling delays. That said, these are minor issues. If you're organized and confident in your application, it won't matter whether you apply on a Monday, Friday or Saturday night. Even though the day of the week you apply for a loan doesn't matter, delays can still happen if your application isn't solid. Here are a few tips to make sure your loan application gets processed promptly and smoothly. Have all your documents ready: When you apply for a loan, lenders will usually ask for proof of income, ID and possibly bank statements. Make sure you have all this information ready and that the files are clear and easy to read. Double-check your application for errors: A small mistake (like putting the wrong Social Security number or income) can trigger a manual review or rejection. So always double-check every detail before you submit. Know your credit score ahead of time: Since your score plays a big role in the loan terms you'll get, check it beforehand. If it's lower than expected, consider taking steps to improve it before applying. Stay reachable: After submitting your application, make sure to respond to the lender's request as soon as you receive it. If the lender needs anything else and you take a few days to respond, that's a few days added to your timeline.
