State Govt won't compromise on education: Tripura CM Manik Saha
Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 27 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said that the state government will not compromise on the development of education, while announcing that competitive exam centres will be opened in three places for job seekers.
'Considering the job-seekers of Tripura, Tripura Competitive Exam Centres will be opened in three places in the state. Financial resources have been allocated in the budget for setting up these centers in Udaipur, Agartala, and Ambassa,' he said.
The Chief Minister said this today at the inauguration of Chinmaya Hari Hara Vidyalaya and the Bhoomi Pujan of Chinmaya Sundarayi Temple at West Taranagar, Mohanpur, according to a release from Tripura CMO
Saha said at the event that education is very necessary for social and economic development.
'Knowledge will increase through education. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly said that in the future, this world will be in the hands of those who have education. Education increases a person's personality and self-confidence. I congratulate the educational institution that started here today. Today will be a memorable day for the people of Mohanpur subdivision as well. This educational mission will be a blessing for them. This mission has started its work with a noble purpose,' said Saha.
According to the release, the Chief Minister said that the Prime Minister has laid special emphasis on vocational education and quality education.
'We are also working to take the state's education sector forward in that direction. Children should be motivated for social work from childhood. The mentality of helping people should be developed. If there is knowledge in life, all obstacles can be removed and one can move forward. Now, we are in the era of AI and digitalisation. AI is now being used in all fields. Now, many paths to acquire knowledge have also been opened. Knowledge should be acquired through education, and society should accept the words of a wise person,' Manik Saha said.
Manik Saha further said that the National Education Policy 2020 has been launched in the country due to the dedicated efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to release.
'The National Education Policy has been launched in schools and colleges in our state as well. It has been formulated in line with reality. On June 23, Tripura became the third state in the country to achieve full literacy. The literacy rate is 95.6%. After Mizoram and Goa, our state has achieved the recognition of a fully literate state, which is a matter of great pride for us. Three new general degree colleges will be opened in Ambassa, Kakraban, and Karbook,' he said.
He said that currently, the state has educational institutions like the National Law University, National Forensic Science University, National Sanskrit University, Central University, IIIT, Fishery College, Agricultural College, Veterinary College, TIT, etc. Apart from this, many more educational institutions are being set up in different places privately, the release added.
Local MLA and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Swami Shubhkarananda Maharaj, eminent social worker G.R. Ravindra Raju, Amit Rakshit, and other scholars were present as distinguished guests at the event. (ANI)

PM Modi honoured as 'Dharma Chakravarti' on Jain saint Vidyanand's centenary NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday honoured with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti' on centenary celebrations of Jain spiritual leader Vidyanand at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The title, symbolising a righteous ruler and upholder of dharma, was conferred on PM Modi. Speaking on receiving the award, PM Modi said, "On this occasion, you honoured me with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti'. I do not consider myself suitable for this. But it is our culture that whatever we receive from saints, we accept it as 'prasad'. So, I humbly accept this 'prasad' and dedicate it to Maa Bharati'." The centenary celebrations mark the beginning of a year-long national tribute to the revered saint and scholar, organised jointly by the Union ministry of culture and the Bhagwan Mahaveer Ahimsa Bharti Trust. Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, 'Today, we are all witnessing a significant occasion in India's spiritual tradition. PM Modi hailed the renowned Jain saint as 'Yug Purush' and 'Yug Drashta'. He said, 'I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience his spiritual aura in person. He gave me his guidance from time to time. I always had his blessings. Today, from this stage of his centenary celebrations, I can feel his love and closeness." Born in 1925 in Shedbal, Belagavi (Karnataka), Vidyanand became one of the most respected Jain monks of modern India. According to news agency PTI, he memorised over 8,000 Jain Agamic verses and authored more than 50 influential works, including Jain Darshan, Anekantvad, and Mokshmarg Darshan. He lived a life of extreme austerity, walked barefoot across the country, and promoted spiritual egalitarianism and inter-sect harmony. His historical contributions include designing the official Jain Flag and Emblem during the 2500th Nirvana Mahotsav of Bhagwan Mahavir in 1975. The five-colour flag and the Ahimsa hand symbol are now universally accepted across Jain traditions. He was also pivotal in identifying Basokund in Bihar as Bhagwan Mahavir's birthplace — a finding recognised by the Indian government in 1956. The centenary year will be observed until April 22, 2026, through nationwide cultural, literary, educational, and spiritual programmes. As per the Culture Ministry, it will include temple outreach, interfaith dialogues, youth engagement, and Jain heritage awareness initiatives. A commemorative stamp and coin were released, alongside a biographical volume detailing saint's life.

As KSHEC flags ‘violations', St Joseph's University defends programme expansion, calls govt report a ‘misreading of norms'
St Joseph's University has refuted allegations made by the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) that it violated state norms by launching new academic programmes and admitting excess students without government approval. The university, in its official response, termed the objections 'a misreading of UGC norms and state-issued guidelines' and said that it would consider raising the matter with the state government. On June 24, the Karnataka Higher Education Department announced a penalty of Rs 4 lakh on the university based on KSHEC's inspection report which found that St Joseph's had introduced over 20 new undergraduate programmes and admitted more than 500 additional students during the 2023–24 and 2024–25 academic years. The report also said that the institution failed to share 60 per cent of its seats with the state, as mandated for private universities. In a detailed response, Prof Dr Melwin Colaco, Registrar of St Joseph's University, said the changes were made in good faith, based on the National Education Policy (NEP) guidelines issued by the state. 'It is our understanding that the council's objections are based on a wrongful reading of UGC norms and the specific directions issued from time to time,' he said. Tracing the developments back to 2021, Prof Colaco explained that when the institution was still St Joseph's College (Autonomous), affiliated to Bangalore City University, it had restructured academic offerings in response to the NEP. 'Three major programmes were reconfigured into two major combinations, thereby increasing the number of programmes offered, though the overall student intake remained the same,' he clarified. To expand access, particularly for students from marginalised communities, the institution introduced a third academic shift (Shift-III), incorporating courses from the erstwhile St Joseph's Evening College. 'A resolution to this effect was passed during the Academic Council meeting in 2021,' Prof Colaco said, adding that the government was kept informed. 'We had sought formal approval from the Government of Karnataka and Bangalore City University, but there was no response. As per the circular dated August 26, 2021, autonomous colleges were permitted to introduce new programmes as long as the government was duly informed.' In July 2022, when the institution became a university, it continued offering the modified programmes, assuming continuity under NEP reforms. Approvals were sought for additional PG and PhD programmes from the KSHEC, which were later approved by an expert committee in 2023. However, during a 2025 inspection, a KSHEC member raised objections to the expanded course list and Shift-III, calling it inconsistent with UGC rules. 'We explained that the shift system was introduced to optimise underutilised infrastructure. These concerns were nevertheless recorded as violations,' Prof Colaco said.
