'Nightmare' Neighbour fined for rat infested garden in Melton Mowbray

Metro5 days ago
A man has been handed a court bill for £1,200 for failing to tidy his 'nightmare' overgrown garden.
Richard Bates, who lives in Melton Mowbray near Leicester, was approached by his local council in September 2024 over the overgrown vegetation at the front of his house.
He later got formal warnings and a fixed penalty notice, before council workers eventually moved in to tidy up the site.
They were tasked with clearing the 'very overgrown vegetation and any other items that could provide food and harbour vermin'.
While carrying out the work, they found a rat's nest in the garden, which Melton Borough Council described as a 'nightmare'.
On July 9 at Leicester Magistrates' Court, the matter was found proved in Bates' absence and he received a £500. More Trending
He was also ordered to pay £500 towards the council's costs and a victim charge of £200, while the council said he would also be recharged for the cost of the works.
Bates was found proved of failing to comply with a community protection notice.
Councillor Sarah Cox, portfolio holder for corporate finance, property and resources at the council, said: 'Even with support from our teams, the resident failed to adhere to the conditions set out to him, forcing us to take necessary action to keep the area clean and free of pests.
'We take issues such as anti-social behaviour very seriously.
'If a supportive approach fails, we will not hesitate to enforce and act to keep our communities a safe and thriving place to live.'

Coroner rules what really happened to Jay Slater when he died in Tenerife

Jay slater, the British teenager who went missing in Tenerife last summer, died by accident after falling down a ravine, a coroner concluded. The 19-year-old was attempting a 14-hour walk home from a night out with friends drinking and taking drugs, Preston Coroner's Court has heard. Mr Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had been to the NRG music festival at the Papagayo nightclub in the resort of Playa de las Americas on June 16 last year. It's thought he left to go to an Airbnb holiday flat near Masca in the early hours of the next morning. The inquest heard his phone battery had died and he needed a drink but had no water as he set off on the long walk back. As temperatures grew he left the road and ended up in the ravine, where he was found to have suffered severe head injuries from a fall. His body was discovered on July 15, a month after he went missing. More Trending Concluding a two-day inquest into his death, Dr James Adeley, senior coroner for Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen, said: 'Jay fell at a particularly dangerous area in difficult terrain. 'He fell approximately 20 to 25 metres, suffering skull fractures and brain trauma from which he would have died instantaneously. Jay Dean Slater died an accidental death. 'This is a tragic death of a young man.' More to come. Got a story? Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ Or you can submit your videos and pictures here. British drug mules who ‘thought cocaine was Angel Delight' spared death penalty

Three British people who allegedly smuggled drugs into Bali have been spared the death penalty and were let off with a one-year sentence. Lisa Stocker, Jonathan Collyer and Phineas Float from East Sussex were stopped at Bali's international airport with 17 packages of cocaine in February. Stocker, who is a mum-of-three, and her partner Collyer had travelled together via Qatar while Float was accused of receiving the packages at an airport hotel. But Stocker broke down in tears and told the court she was tricked into carrying the drugs, with her friend telling her it was Angel Delight. Collyer admitted they were 'very stupid', and insisted they would not do it again. The trio faced the death penalty under Indonesia's strict drug laws, but judge Heriyanti said he was reducing their sentence because they all behaved 'politely'. He handed down a one-year sentence, with the group expected to be released in February. Convicted drug traffickers can be executed by firing squad in the country, and if they are spared the death penalty are often sentenced to life in prison. But the nation has not carried out an execution since 2016 and in the last few months has repatriated several foreign convicts of drug offences. Stocker had broken down in tears as she told the court she had been tricked into carrying the packages. Meanwhile Float got into a shouting match at a previous hearing, telling a journalist to 'f*** off' on the first day of his trial. Collyer's dad Julian said he was in 'deep shock' for his son, with whom he had only been in contact once in the last three weeks. He told MailOnline: 'I'm very, very worried as any father or parent would be.' More Trending Dean, a friend of Jon's said he was unaware the couple had travelled to Indonesia and said the situation was 'an absolute mess'. Several high profile foreign drug smugglers have been allowed to return home from Indonesia in recent months. Serge Atlaoui, who was sentenced to death for drug offences in 2007, was repatriated to France in February. Last December Philippine drug convict Mary Jane Veloso was returned to Manila after more than a decade on death row.
