8 Snakes Rescued From UP House 2 Days After Villagers Kill 52 Serpents
Two days after the residents of Samouli village in Meerut district killed 52 snakes that crawled out of the courtyard of a farmer's house, forest officials rescued eight snakes from the same house under the Daurala police station limits, officials said on Wednesday.
According to the forest department, the non-venomous snakes were safely removed by a rescue team after they were found at the residence of Mahfooz Saifi on Tuesday night.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rajesh Kumar told PTI on Wednesday that the rescued snakes appeared to be of non-venomous species.
"It is likely that the snakes laid eggs in the house earlier, which are now hatching in phases," Kumar said.
Aditya Tiwari, a herpetologist who runs an NGO, said the snakes likely belonged to the checkered keelback species, a water snake.
"This species is non-venomous, and a female can lay up to 40-50 eggs at a time," he said.
The recurring incidents have triggered panic in the village, with locals demanding a permanent solution to the issue.
The forest department has urged residents not to harm snakes and to report such sightings to the authorities immediately.
Officials also reminded people that killing snakes is a punishable offence under the Wildlife Protection Act, and strict action will be taken against the violators. On Sunday, the village witnessed a startling sight when more than 100 snakes crawled out of the courtyard of Saifi's house, triggering panic in the area.
After the initial shock, the villagers joined Saifi and his family and killed as many as 52 snakes, which they buried in a pit.
The DFO told PTI on Monday that a team was dispatched to the spot for investigation after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The snakes turned out to be creatures protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, he said.

Yamuna water quality improved sharply in July: Environment Minister Sirsa
New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Saturday said the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has reported a significant improvement in the water quality of the Yamuna river in July, with key pollution indicators showing marked progress compared to June. Sirsa attributed the changes to sustained government efforts under the Yamuna cleaning program. 'These improvements are not incidental or seasonal. They are the result of deliberate and sustained human effort," he said. The minister said that Rs 500 crore allocated for Yamuna cleaning is being used for upgrading sewage treatment plants, intercepting drains and preventing untreated discharges from entering the river. The DPCC collected water samples from eight monitoring locations, including Palla, Wazirabad, ISBT Bridge, ITO Bridge, Nizamuddin Bridge and Okhla Barrage, the government said in a statement. 'According to the report, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) — a key measure of organic pollution — dropped sharply. At ITO Bridge, BOD levels fell from 70 mg/l in June to 20 mg/l in July. At Okhla Barrage, it declined from 46 mg/l to 8 mg/l," it added. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), another critical pollution indicator, also showed improvement. COD at ITO Bridge reduced from 186 mg/l to 54 mg/l and from 100 mg/l to 30 mg/l at Okhla Barrage, the government said. Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels, which were near zero in parts of the river in June, increased significantly at locations like Palla and Wazirabad, suggesting better oxygenation. 'We are not celebrating yet, but these results show our approach is working. The transformation of Delhi's environment is underway," the minister said. Sirsa also linked the progress on water quality to broader environmental gains under the Environment Action Plan 2025. Delhi recorded 29 out of 31 days in July with 'good' or 'satisfactory' air quality, making it the cleanest July on record. Man out on bail for raping woman opens fire at her in Delhi
Agency: Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) A woman was shot at in Delhi's Vasant Vihar allegedly by a man who was out on interim bail in a rape case she filed against him last year, an official said on Saturday. The woman, a head manager at a salon, was hit on the chest and was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre in a PCR van. The woman remains under treatment and is reported to be in stable condition, officials added. Abuzair Safi (30), and his accomplice Aman Sukhla have been arrested for attempting to kill the woman on Wednesday. The arrests were made on Thursday and Friday. According to police, two men on a black motorcycle fired at the woman on Wednesday. Safi, who got bail for a rape case the woman filed last year, was the one who allegedly fired at her, they said. Police reached the spot and found an abandoned auto-rickshaw. The driver, Ranjeet Yadav, told police that his female passenger had sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre by a PCR van. A case was registered at Vasant Vihar Police Station under Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Arms Act, based on the woman's statement, police said. 'During interrogation, it emerged that Safi was enraged at the victim for getting a criminal case registered against him. He had tried to contact her multiple times, but she refused to respond, which further aggravated his anger," a senior police officer said. The next day, on August 1, Safi was apprehended and the firearm allegedly used in the shooting was seized from his possession. 'Further investigation is underway to ascertain if more people were involved and to verify the background of the accused," the officer said.
