Legal action taken against Western media over Air India crash coverage
The UK-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff on June 12, killing 241 of 242 people onboard and 19 people on the ground. A preliminary report by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) found that cockpit fuel switches had been switched off seconds after takeoff, which shut down both engines. The reason for the fuel switches being moved remains unclear.
The pilot body accused the Western media – particularly the WSJ and Reuters – of misrepresenting the findings and blaming the crew.
'Right from day one… there were Western media people in captain's uniforms saying, 'we know exactly what happened', 'we know exactly that the pilot made a mistake',' Wadia told RT on Saturday. He added there were multiple 'insinuations' suggesting pilot error from the outlets.
'These are totally irresponsible, irrational and illogical statements... to blame the pilots when we know for a fact that the pilots have done a wonderful job,' Wadia added. 'That prompted us to give a notice to the Western media… that please resort to facts only and not to conjecture.' A legal notice is a formal warning that often precedes a lawsuit.
Asked why such reporting occurred, Wadia responded: 'It's just one word – finance.'
'Suppose it is found that Boeing is at fault for faulty equipment and that is what caused the crash… Therefore, they have tried to lay the foundation from the very next day that the fault of the accident is the pilots,' he said.
While the AAIB report does not blame Boeing for the crash, India's aviation regulator has ordered fuel system checks on all domestic aircraft made by the US firm. Wadia declined to speculate on why the switches were turned off, saying only that further analysis is needed. However, he urged the Western media not to assign blame while the probe is ongoing.

Deadly clashes erupt on Cambodia-Thailand border
Thailand and Cambodia have exchanged strikes in a flare-up of violence over a disputed border area. At least a dozen people are reported to have been killed since clashes erupted on Thursday. Troops from both sides exchanged fire near the Ta Muen Thom temple, a centuries-old Khmer Hindu site located in a contested area claimed by both nations. The dispute stems from colonial-era French maps that left parts of the border ill-defined. Both countries have accused each other of opening fire first. The clash marks the deadliest escalation in the long-running territorial standoff in recent years. The day before, Thailand closed its northeast border crossing with Cambodia, withdrew its ambassador, and expelled the Cambodian envoy to protest a landmine blast that wounded five Thai soldiers. Cambodia has since said it will also be downgrading diplomatic relations with Thailand to their lowest level, and will be expelling the Thai ambassador as well as recalling all Cambodian staff from its embassy in Bangkok.

India to use AI and drones to combat crimes against women
New Delhi proposes to use artificial intelligence-based facial recognition systems, smart lighting systems, and drones to monitor high-risk areas to curb crime against women in the country, the Home Ministry told the Supreme Court on Monday. The ministry was responding to a public interest litigation filed by the Supreme Court Women Lawyers' Association over the rise in crimes against women in the country, a Hindustan Times report said. The home ministry said seven railway stations in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and others, will soon be equipped with AI systems, a Times of India report added. Other measures such as automatic license plate recognition, smart lighting systems, and drones to monitor high risk areas will be put in place, the ministry added. The ministry told the top court that the National Data Sharing and Exchange Platform contains sensitive information, including names, addresses, photographs, and fingerprint details of individuals involved in various sexual offenses such as rape, stalking, and child abuse, the Hindustan Times report added. As of now, the database has 2.02 million entries that can be accessed by all police stations and law enforcement agencies across the country through the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System database. This is an initiative aimed at integrating the police, courts, prisons, forensic labs, and prosecution, with the help of technology, the ministry said. The Supreme Court Women Lawyers' Association argued that further measures are necessary to combat crimes against women, as the existing steps outlined by the ministry are not making a "big difference," according to the Hindustan Times report. Data from India's National Crime Records Bureau showed an increase in crimes against women, from 5.8 million in 2018 to 6.6 million in 2022. Last week, a 20-year-old student who had repeatedly complained of sexual harassment by a senior teacher died from 90% burns after attempting self-immolation outside the principal's office, according to reports.
