Djokovic wary of Evans threat, Krejcikova worships at 'temple of tennis'

The Sun6 hours ago
NOVAK Djokovic goes into his Wimbledon second-round match against Dan Evans on Thursday with an unlikely losing record against the British wildcard... even though they have met only once before.
The seven-time champion will likely be unfazed by his defeat against Evans on the clay of Monte Carlo in 2021 as he tries to take the next step towards a record 25th Grand Slam title.
Elsewhere on day four at the All England Club, defending women's champion Barbora Krejcikova will hope to stay in the groove and British fourth seed Jack Draper takes on former finalist Marin Cilic.

Djokovic wary of crowd-fuelled Evans
Novak Djokovic will hope he is back in top physical shape as he prepares to take on fellow veteran Dan Evans on Thursday.
The Serb struggled with stomach issues in his four-set win in the first round against Frenchman Alexandre Muller before recovering strongly, praising 'miracle pills'.
Realistically, he is unlikely to lose sleep over the match-up with the 154th-ranked Briton, who, at 35, is three years younger than him, but he is wary of his opponent's experience on grass and the home support.
'It's a good test for both of us,' said Djokovic. 'I think he's been picking his form up, as well. I think his rankings are not doing him justice at the moment. He deserves to be ranked higher.
'He's been a really tough player to face on any surface, particularly the grass and quicker ones. I know that because that's always the talk of the locker room. He's one of the guys that you don't want to face on grass.'
Evans, for his part, knows he has to have the right mindset against the sixth seed.
'He's done pretty much everything in the game,' he said. 'But it's also my chance to win the match. I have to be competitive, I have to play my game, I have to be myself. I can't go into my shell and have too much respect.'
Krejcikova relishing 'temple of tennis'
Defending women's champion Barbora Krejcikova looked in deep trouble in her opening match before cutting out the errors and finding another gear to see off Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in three sets.
The Czech 17th seed next takes on US player Caroline Dolehide, whom she has faced just once, beating her on clay in the United States in 2019.
Krejcikova has had a miserable time with injuries this year and arrived at Wimbledon with just six matches under her belt in 2025.
But the two-time Grand Slam champion is relishing being back on the hallowed turf of the All England Club, describing walking onto Centre Court for her first-round match as a 'very beautiful and just very joyful experience'.
'It's just great to be back,' she said. 'It's just great to be playing in the temple of tennis. It's just a very, very special place.'
Draper comfortable as leader of Brit pack
Jack Draper is the new figurehead of British tennis, taking on a role filled for a generation by the now-retired Andy Murray.
The fourth seed, who meets former finalist Marin Cilic in the second round, appears comfortable with his new status.
'I kind of play every match like my life depends on it anyway,' said the 23-year-old.
'Having the British support is massive. We're always playing with pressure. There's a little bit more here and stuff.
'But honestly, I haven't thought about it. I feel like I can handle things that come my way. I've been through a lot of things in my life so far.'
Cilic, 36, has an impressive record at Wimbledon, finishing as runner-up in 2017, when he lost in the final against Roger Federer.
But the Croatian former world number three has not played at the All England Club since 2021 and has slipped to 83rd in the rankings.

British and Irish Lions call up former England captain Owen Farrell

SYDNEY: Owen Farrell received a shock British and Irish Lions call up Thursday after utility back Elliot Daly was ruled out of their Australia tour, with his father, head coach Andy Farrell, citing experience in defending the decision. The 33-year-old former England captain, a three-time Lions tourist, earned the last of his 112 Test caps at the 2023 World Cup and has not played any rugby for nearly nine weeks after suffering a concussion. But the fly-half is a proven international performer and his father said the call-up was justified. "When you look at the experience that Elliot's had, I mean the experience isn't just the playing side, it's how you make the group feel, the little chats that you have around the place to make sure that everything's gelled together," he said. "And obviously Owen would bring a lot of that into the group." While Finn Russell is the clear favourite to start the three-Test series against the Wallabies at fly-half, Farrell can also operate in the centre and has a trusty boot for goal-kicking. But his call-up is a surprise with the Lions having plenty of options in the backs and the likes of Scotland's Tom Jordan and Wales' Blair Murray also seen as in the running as replacements. "Well, he's fit otherwise he wouldn't be picked," said Farrell when asked about his son's lack of recent rugby after an injury-plagued season with Racing 92. "I know that the guys have been keeping in close touch with him ... and he's been training full ball for quite some time now. "If he didn't have a chance (of playing), then what's the point," he added. "Everyone should be competing. "That's what everyone in the group would want but along with that the experience brings the support that you need for the group, and again, how you make the room feel." The versatile Daly, a 72-Test England veteran, was forced off during the second half of the Lions' 52-12 victory over Queensland Reds on Wednesday, with X-rays revealing a fractured forearm. "It's disappointing for all of us, he's an unbelievably popular bloke amongst the group," said Farrell. "So very sad." It is their second injury setback since arriving in Australia for their nine-match tour on June 22. Experienced Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams pulled a hamstring during their opening clash with Western Force and is also out of the tour, with Scotland's Ben White joining the squad as replacement. The first Test is on July 19 in Brisbane, with three more warm-up games before that, starting in Sydney on Saturday against the NSW Waratahs. Ireland's Tadhg Beirne was appointed skipper for the match, with tour captain Maro Itoje given the night off. He is joined in the second row by James Ryan. Pierre Schoeman, Luke Cowan-Dickie and Finlay Bealham pack down in the front row while Henry Pollock, Josh van der Flier and Ben Earl fill out the backrow. English pair Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith start at scrum-half and fly-half respectively, with Scottish duo Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones in the centres. Hugo Keenan and Blair Kinghorn make their Lions debuts and are joined in the back three by Mack Hansen. British and Irish Lions (15-1): Hugo Keenan; Mack Hansen, Huw Jones, Sione Tuipulotu, Blair Kinghorn; Fin Smith, Alex Mitchell; Ben Earl, Josh van der Flier, Henry Pollock; James Ryan, Tadhg Beirne (capt); Finlay Bealham, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Pierre Schoeman

Sabalenka praying for no more Wimbledon upsets after battling win

Aryna Sabalenka is a three-time Grand Slam champion but has never gone beyond the Wimbledon semi-finals. (AP pic) LONDON : World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka said she hopes there are 'no more upsets' at Wimbledon after reaching the third round with a hard-fought 7-6(7/4), 6-4 win over Marie Bouzkova today. Several stars suffered shock first round exits from the All England Club, including second seed Coco Gauff, third seed Jessica Pegula and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen. Top seed Sabalenka was pushed hard by Bouzkova in today's opening match on Centre Court as her Czech opponent matched fire with fire in a bruising encounter. But she eventually had too much in her locker for her 48th-ranked opponent, firing an impressive 41 winners in a match lasting 1 hour and 35 minutes. The Belarusian said after her win she was aware of the seeds who had crashed out but planned to focus on her own game. 'Honestly it's very sad to see so many top players losing in the first round but you better focus on yourself and stay away from the results,' she said. 'I mean of course you're going to know the overall picture but it's better to take it one step at a time and do your best every time you're out here competing and I'm trying to stay away. 'I hope it's no upsets anymore in this tournament, if you know what I mean!' The first set went with serve until Sabalenka doubled-faulted in the 11th game to hand Bouzkova the chance to serve for the set. But the Belarusian broke back with a searing backhand down the line and came out on top in the tie-break to establish a foothold in the match. Sabalenka broke again in the fifth game of the second set to move within sight of victory and closed out the match with little fuss. She will face 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu or former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the third round on Friday. Although Sabalenka is a three-time Grand Slam champion, she has suffered agonising three-set defeats in this year's Australian Open and French Open finals. The 27-year-old has never been beyond the Wimbledon semi-finals and missed last year's tournament with a shoulder injury.

Boxing-Saudi's Alalshikh says Fury will return in 2026

Boxing - Oleksandr Usyk v Tyson Fury - Heavyweight World Title - Kingdom Arena, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - December 22, 2024 Tyson Fury reacts during his fight against Oleksandr Usyk Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge (Reuters) -Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury will come out of retirement and return to the ring next year, according to Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority. Fury, 36, called time on his career in January after losing his rematch for the WBA (Super), WBO and WBC world heavyweight titles against Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk. "The 'Gypsy King' will be back!!! I talked with him, and I have his word to have him in Riyadh Season in 2026 ... We have a rabbit to hunt!" Alalshikh posted on social media alongside a picture of him shaking hands with Fury. Fury, whose last three fights were in Saudi Arabia, reacted to the post by writing: "Let's see what 2025 brings" along with dollar signs, a winking face and laughing emojis. He also spoke to reporters at an International Boxing Association event in Istanbul on Wednesday, naming Usyk as the boxer he most wanted to fight if he returned to the ring. "Who would I rather fight, right now? Usyk. Because I want my revenge in England," he said. "I don't believe I've got a fair shout the last two times. That's all I want. I want a fair shout, and I don't believe I've got a fair shout the last two times. "That's the one I want, but if I don't get that then it'd be (Anthony) Joshua, the biggest British fight that will ever happen."
