‘Oru Thai Nadaam' drive launched in Alappuzha

The Hindu11-06-2025
The Haritha Keralam Mission has launched its 'Oru Thai Nadaam' (sapling planting) drive in Alappuzha.
The initiative aims at planting one crore saplings across the State by September 30. The district-level inauguration of the campaign was held earlier this week on the Komalapuram Spinning Mill premises. The event was inaugurated by Alappuzha district panchayat president K.G. Rajeshwari.
As part of the campaign, saplings of various species, suitable for the region and facing the threat of extinction, will be planted in various local bodies across the district through initiatives like Pachathuruth, Ormathuruth and afforestation drives.
In addition to the saplings provided by the Forest department, those required for creating Pachathuruths will be sourced from nurseries under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and other local places.
The plantation drive will also be carried out in areas declared as green streets and green towns under the Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam campaign. Officials said 17 new Pachathuruths had already been established on 149 cents of land in the district.
In the coming days, saplings will be planted at various sites under 63 local self-government institutions, including the premises of government and private institutions, public spaces, vacant plots in urban areas, school campuses and office compounds. Various organisations, employees, and students will also take part in the campaign, said an official.

KSRTC clears 104 tonnes legacy waste

Thiruvananthapuram: As part of the state govt's waste-free Nava Keralam people's campaign, KSRTC is promoting waste-free operations across all its units in collaboration with the Haritha Keralam Mission. So far, 86 depots have received recognition and certification from the Haritha Keralam Mission for their waste management practices. KSRTC has handed over 104 tonnes of accumulated waste—including rexine, plastic, and e-waste—from its depots and workshops to the Clean Kerala Company. To ensure accountability and transparency in waste removal, a gate pass system has been introduced. In addition to waste management, beautification efforts are also underway at bus stations. To monitor the type and volume of waste removed and to check for any remaining waste, KSRTC has developed and implemented an online data entry system. Awareness posters and training sessions have been organized for employees and the public in coordination with the Haritha Keralam Mission. To curb littering at bus stations, KSRTC has launched the 'Depot Security 360' project, which involves the installation of comprehensive CCTV surveillance systems—including coverage of blind spots—across all depots in the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Waste bins are also being installed to encourage proper disposal of waste. Around 600 bins have been placed at various bus stations, and an additional 2,000 bins are being installed on KSRTC buses. This initiative is being implemented with the support of a private financial institution. The waste collected from these bins will be segregated and processed at bus stations before being handed over to the Haritha Karma Sena for disposal. KSRTC authorities said the waste-free drive—conducted in partnership with Haritha Keralam Mission, Sanitation Mission, Clean Kerala Company, and local self-government bodies—has received strong support from both employees and passengers. Over 60,000 found ineligible under Delhi government's Women's Pension Scheme after verification drive

Over 60,000 beneficiaries have been found ineligible under the Delhi government's Women's Pension Scheme following a large-scale verification exercise conducted by the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department, officials on Monday said. This scheme provides a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to widowed, divorced, separated and destitute women. However, a door-to-door verification drive launched in November last year uncovered widespread discrepancies. As a result, the names of over 60,000 ineligible recipients have now been removed from the beneficiary list, an official told PTI. "The verification revealed several instances where women no longer met the eligibility criteria but continued to receive the pension. These included remarried women claiming to be divorced, employed women drawing assistance despite a steady income and others who no longer resided at their registered addresses," he said. The official said that "a number of beneficiaries were found to be ineligible under the existing norms of the scheme". Live Events "The verification drive has been completed in all districts and necessary corrections have been made to the database," he said, adding this exercise has enabled us to ensure that the pension is provided only to those who genuinely qualify for it. The official said the verification process, conducted by the Anganwadi workers, covered nearly 4.25 lakh beneficiaries. Pension payments have been discontinued for those found ineligible and resumed for verified beneficiaries. At present, around 3.65 lakh women are receiving regular pension under the scheme, he added. The official further said that the initiative was not intended to withdraw support from genuine applicants but to eliminate fraudulent claims and strengthen accountability. "Correcting the beneficiary list is essential to uphold the integrity of the welfare system, it also helps avoid diversion of funds and ensures that deserving women are not deprived of timely assistance," he added. This scheme was introduced in 2007-08 to provide a regular source of income to economically weak widows. It supported 6,288 women with Rs 600 per month in the first year. Over time, the benefit amount was increased and eligibility was expanded. Currently, eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old, residents of Delhi for five or more years and belong to families with an annual income not exceeding Rs 1 lakh. The Delhi government spends nearly Rs 1,140 crore annually on the scheme on 3.65 lakh beneficiaries.

Going green, all the way

NIZAMABAD: In the heart of Telangana, a man has quietly turned his life into an ongoing campaign for the environment. Ravutlla Janardhan, widely known as 'Green Janardhan', is living out a commitment to ecological responsibility that goes beyond words or slogans. Every action he takes reflects his mission to protect the Earth. Born in Mailaram village, Nizamabad, Janardhan has chosen to stay rooted in his homeland while many of his peers have opted to find employment in the Gulf and focus on what he believes is worth nurturing — nature itself. From his small printing press in Pusala Galli, Nizamabad, he runs the Sri Venella Green Society, a group that is leading environmental initiatives across the district. The society is involved in sapling plantations, making seed balls and holding awareness programmes, drawing in students, residents, and officials alike. Janardhan's personal choices echo his mission. He invariably wears green shorts with white trousers, rides a green motorbike and greet everyone with ecofriendly messages in Telugu. He prefers natural, traditional foods. These habits are not for show — they are now part of his identity. Since 2009, Janardhan has taken on the task of increasing green cover in the region. So far, he has planted over 2.5 lakh saplings, prepared 5 lakh seed balls and distributed 50 quintals of seeds in selected areas. He works with the Forest department, educational institutions and communities, taking on the planting and maintenance costs himself while urging people to care for the saplings.
