Welshpool to host Montgomeryshire County Music Festival
The Montgomeryshire County Music Festival was established in 1921 and continues the tradition of performing larger choral works sung by amalgamating choirs from across north Powys.
However, due to spiralling costs and reduced funding, the festival needed to find a smaller venue for this year's performances.
Organisers said the Methodist Church in Welshpool proved to be an 'excellent' musical venue being the home of the town's Music Club.
For the event held on Saturday, May 10, the two affiliated choirs, Welshpool and Llanidloes Choral Societies, are augmented by individual singers from the county and the borders.
Patrick Larley, a freelance composer, conductor, tenor and keyboard player, returns to conduct the festival choir with a performance of Dvorak's Mass in D major and the ever-popular Sacred Songs by Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins.
The choir will be joined on the night by soloists Sarah Anne Cromwell (soprano), Samantha Lewis (contralto), Wiliam Smith (tenor) and Ben Watkins (bass). Aeron Preston will accompany on the organ joined by his sister, Lowri Preston, on the cello.

Aki, who featured in all three Tests for the British and Irish Lions here in Australia, was on the bench for the first Test in Brisbane. However, following the third Test defeat in Sydney, Aki revealed that he recently welcomed a fifth child - although he's yet to see his newest daughter. "I want to enjoy my break, my family time," said the 35-year-old as he reflected on the end of a long Lions tour. "I haven't seen my family for eight weeks. "I have a new-born child who I haven't met yet. She was born when we were playing in Brisbane, so I haven't met her. "Her name is Aine, so I'm looking forward to going and meeting my new-born child and we'll go from there." Aki and his wife have a simple theme when it comes to naming their children, with Aine joining Armani-Jade, Adrianna, Andronicus and Ailbhe. Article continues below "All my kids start with A," he added. "So my wife loved the name Aine. That's five As in the family." When asked if it had been difficult not seeing his new-born daughter and the rest of his family, Aki ultimately told the remarkable story of how his wife gave birth in New Zealand on the same day he was facing the Wallabies. "I have to say it to her. If you only knew the story of what happened, it's a funny story in itself. It was a good day. "I was in the hotel. I knew we were overdue. The missus calls me and she's like, 'Water hasn't broke but I'm going to the hospital, I'm feeling contractions.' "I go, 'Yeah, fair enough.' She goes to the hospital, we're getting ready for the team meeting pre-match, and then she calls me and says she's on the way to the hospital, so I said, 'Fine, be safe.' "Five minutes later, she sends a photo, her water broke. I was like, 'Cool, OK, are you almost there?' This is like 30 or 40 minutes away from the hospital, so I said, 'You'll be all right, Mum is there.' "Ten minutes later, she video calls me and I was like, 'S**t, what's going on?' I saw a baby on the video call, so she had it in the car on the way to the hospital. They're both strong and healthy, so happy days. "In New Zealand, yeah. So happy days." Article continues below Given the nature of the day, it might have been difficult for Aki to focus on the rugby, but the centre admitted he had no issue getting on with the task of taking on Australia at Suncorp Stadium. "I knew it was good Juju, I knew it was good Juju," he said. "So I knew we were going to have a good day."

The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor, who is also the co-owner of Wrexham AFC alongside fellow Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, was seen in a short clip practising his Welsh words and phrases as the cultural festival kickstarts this weekend. The American actor was aided by Maxine Hughes, a Welsh journalist from Conwy who now lives in Washington D.C. The journalist has been helping both McElhenney and Reynolds with learning Welsh since they took over the north Wales club in 2020. At the start of the short clip, Maxine begins: "Ok, let's do: 'Croeso i'r Eisteddfod yn Wrecsam', which I know you can do this because we've done the 'croeso' many times before". Rob then repeats 'Croeso i'r Eisteddfod yn Wrecsam' in near perfect Welsh, but as Maxine points out the 'y' in the word 'yn', which means 'in' in Welsh, has a distinctive sound. "You actually sounded like a proper Welsh person there because you called it 'Steddfod, which is what we call it. That was excellent." The two then go over 'Mae'r Eisteddfod yn dod i Wrecsam', which means that the 'Eisteddfod is coming to Wrexham'. By his second attempt, the comedian and actor has perfect pronunciation of the phrase and seemingly knows it as his smile beams. The sweet clip comes as the National Eisteddfod begins in the Welsh city on Saturday, August 2. The week-long cultural festival will take place at Is-y-Coed in Wrexham, the first time it has been held in the city since 2011. The Labour minister became emotional during an interview, describing how he felt like a "16-year-old whore" due to the actions of Mr Croft, who was at the helm of the esteemed drama group. In a conversation with the Sunday Times, Sir Chris Bryant recounted that Mr Croft, who died in 1986, would invite him for dinner every evening when he was part of the company in London during the summer of 1978, at the age of 16. One night, said Sir Chris, he returned from the toilet at Mr Croft's residence to find his host, who was four decades older than him, naked apart from a silk robe. The minster said the abuse left him feeling like a "16-year-old whore" (Image: PA) The MP for Rhondda and Ogmore disclosed that Mr Croft then propositioned him for sex, and he felt he had no choice but to comply, reports the Mirror. Ahead of the launch of his book 'A Life And A Half: The Unexpected Making Of A Politician', Sir Chris admitted: "I don't like telling this very much because I've not told it very often. "It was always the same Italian in King's Cross. He would eat and drink, I would eat, then he would theoretically give me a lift home, except I always ended up at his house." As an ordained minister, he even agreed to officiate Mr Croft's funeral. However, he expressed anger over the abuse of power and confessed to internalising the shame. "He behaved absolutely appallingly, it's despicable," Sir Chris said. "Michael, in my case, managed to spot somebody who was gay at a time when nearly all homosexuality was illegal - certainly very frowned on - so presumed that people would keep a secret." He revealed that at least one colleague from his National Youth Theatre days was also abused by Mr Croft. The 63-year-old also disclosed he had been sexually assaulted by five male MPs during his time in Westminster, though he has not identified or reported them. "There was no system for doing so and I was frightened it would make me look bad," he explained. He noted that homophobia in Parliament had decreased during his 24 years as an MP. A statement on the National Youth Theatre website said: "We are grateful to Chris Bryant for disclosing to our team the historical abuse he suffered in the company in the 1970s. We are very sorry that this happened to him and to others who have previously shared with us their accounts of historic abuse by the same perpetrator. "As we set out in a public statement on the case in 2017, we stand in solidarity with all victims of abuse and encourage anyone who has experienced abuse, no matter how long ago, to speak to someone and access support. "In this case the perpetrator has been deceased since 1986, but all reports made to us will be dealt with in accordance with our robust and formalised safeguarding policy and practice. "While Chris writes he doesn't feel damaged by what happened, we recognise that being subjected to an abuse of power can have lasting consequences for many, in different ways. "Anyone getting in touch will be listened to and treated with care and respect by trained professionals, in line with our certified trauma-informed practice. "We are grateful to Chris for his support of our organisation today, and acknowledgement of how different a charity we are in 2025 to the one he encountered in the 1970s, with thorough safeguarding practices and policies in place."
