Pregnant ‘drug mule' Bella Culley pleads with court as baby's gender revealed
Pregnant Brit 'drug mule' Bella Culley has issued a plea to see her story 'through my eyes' – as it emerged she is due to have a boy.
The teenager is facing life behind bars in Georgia after allegedly taking cannabis into the country. At a hearing today Bella – who has previously claimed to have been forced by torture – told the judge: 'I hope you understand my story through my eyes. I never thought something like this would happen to me.'
The 19-year-old, whose mum Lyanne was also in the courtroom in the country's capital Tbilisi, then said 'thank you' in Georgian. It was revealed in the courtroom that Bella recently underwent medical tests and is due to have a boy – with her emotional mum later saying outside about her daughter: 'She's feeling pregnant.'
And as she left the courtroom, Bella's mum also reportedly told her: 'I'll come and see you tomorrow, I love you.' Prosecutor Vakhtang Tsalughelashvili had told the court that the crime was 'heavy'. But defence lawyer Malkhaz Salakia said there was no evidence it was committed on purpose. The prosecutor said there was no new evidence from the defence to set Bella free and she should stay in prison given there is a chance of her committing the crime again.
Defence lawyer Mr Salakia said: 'Bella will become a mother soon, she is expecting a boy. I want her to feel this motherhood in freedom. It's a moment of her becoming a mother for the first time in her life – she turned 19 this June. Since the crime committed is not connected to Georgia, and her family has been here – father before and now the mother is here – they are here to look after her, and there is no possibility of influencing the witnesses because they are police and officials.
'She can be assigned to visit the police department two times per month or everyday, however the judge decides – she will fulfil her duty. It's summer, and a pregnant woman needs special hygiene in the month of July – we are offering a plea agreement of 50,000 [Georgian Lari], which will be paid immediately and we ask her immediately to be set free.'
But the judge, Giorgi Gelashvili, concluded that no new evidence had been introduced from the defence side – except that it's hot in prison – to change the previous decision, so Bella would stay in prison. Another hearing in the case is scheduled for early September. The judge explained that if there is a plea agreement then an earlier date could be set.
Bella, from Billingham, Teesside, vanished in Thailand before turning up in Georgia where she was arrested at Tbilisi International Airport in May. She has been accused of taking cannabis and hashish into the country. Outside court, Bella's lawyer said his client was physically feeling OK.

Readers discuss migrant protests, Labour's left-wing, water systems and taxes
Do you agree with our readers? Have your say on these MetroTalk topics and more in the comments. It's so depressing that a heinous crime is being used as a political football to attack refugees. Far-right activists claim that the reason they are targeting a hotel housing asylum seekers in Epping is because one of those asylum seekers was arrested for allegedly attempting to kiss a 14-year-old girl (Metro, Mon). Rates of sexual assault are just as high among men born and bred here as they are among ethnic minorities or migrants. Why aren't these activists also protesting about that? When a white Brit is said to have committed a sexual offence, where are all these guys? Fighting for better prevention strategies and higher rates of police investigation? Nope. They're busy finding some other reason to bash the migrants. Because this isn't about safety. It's about racism. Charlie Parrett, Stoke When I want to solve a problem, I go after the cause. If Nigel Farage and other right-wing politicians actually cared about migration, they'd try to get to the bottom of what's causing it. We've already tried to limit benefits to migrants and the right to bring their families with them, so it isn't that. The ones who come illegally don't have the right to claim benefits anyway. People are risking their lives to come here. Why? If there's not a pull, then there must be a push. These people's homelands are being torn apart in a hellstorm of totalitarianism, war and famine. If you want to stop people coming here, you have to help sort out the countries they're coming from. Remember – if someone's talking about a problem but they're not trying to solve the problem, then they're trying to use the problem to serve their own ends. Helen Shaw, Liverpool Robert Hughes (MetroTalk, Mon) says Jeremy Corbyn's new party will only benefit the Conservatives and Reform by splitting Labour's left-wing vote. Perhaps if Labour offered any sort of concession or appealed to the left wing of its party (its not really extreme considering Labour call themselves democratic socialist) then Corbyn's party wouldn't have nearly as much momentum. They have nobody to blame but themselves. Maybe Labour should worry about their own voter base rather than trying and failing to appeal to the right? James Freeman, Bognor Regis Our junior, now called 'resident', doctors are either striking or leaving altogether because we don't have the money to pay them enough. Our water system is collapsing because we don't have the money to take it back under public ownership. We can't give disabled people the extra help they need because we don't have the money for their 'pip' personal independence payments. We don't have the money to help children with special educational needs, either. All because chancellor Rachel Reeves refuses to tax the unused wealth of the super-rich. People say that if we have a wealth tax, these super-rich people will leave. And maybe some of them will. But a lot of them won't. People aren't motivated by money alone. They're motivated by where they and their families want to live and work. Is it really worth bankrupting our country just to hold on to as many super-rich people as possible? And besides, if we're so broke that our basic infrastructure is starting to fall apart, surely that would be a good reason for those people to leave anyway. Rob Slater, Norfolk The death of a child from measles in Liverpool this month highlights the UK's decline in vaccination rates. Some areas are seeing rates below the 95 per cent target recommended by the World Health Organization. More Trending Sadly, this will lead to more deaths from preventable diseases. The spread of lies and disinformation – particularly on social media – is leading to a misplaced distrust in vaccines. Vaccines have been proven to be safe and have saved millions of lives, including from Covid. If vaccination rates continue to fall, we will see more tragic deaths that could have been easily prevented as well as outbreaks of previously eradicated diseases. But despite this, she was detained and accused of shoplifting. Nelmes, who is a rising name in the Bristol comedy scene, took to social media to explain the incident. "On Tuesday I left a Zara store in Istanbul without paying for items," she said. "I returned straight away and handed the items to staff. I was asked to pay and I said I would and the manager accepted this. "To cut a long story short I was then taken to a locked room where hours later after no communication from anyone I was taken away by police and held in a police station and was asked to sign things I couldn't read. "I was put in a prison cell for 24 hours with no food or toilet facilities. "When I asked for water, I was told they didn't understand me." Nelmes was brought before a judge the next day, who permitted her release but barred her from leaving Turkey. She now faces a potential three-year prison sentence. Leaked footage shows terrifying power of new 'vacuum bomb' the GAZAP - one of the world's most destructive non-nuclear weapons The comedian is required to stay in the country while the incident is under investigation. She has appealed to the public for support in the wake of the incident, fearing she might lose her home back in Britain. The ongoing proceedings are leading to her losing work and income. Nelmes has been unable to afford accommodation in Turkey given she had only come for a short holiday but now finds herself banned from leaving. However, she was offered a place to stay by locals. She added: "I am ok and have been taken in by a Turkish family who have given me a bed and food. "I don't deserve all the kind words from people but I am very grateful." The British Embassy has confirmed it is offering support. It comes after a British tourist was dragged out of a holiday bar and beaten by staff after allegedly refusing to pay a £460 drinks bill. Footage from abar in Thailand's Chiang Mai city shows the holidaymaker being manhandled. The 26-year-old solo traveller was reportedly charged an inflated 20,000 baht - around £460 - for drinks at the Diamond Karaoke Bar. 5 Picture shows Cerys Nelmes Instagram story Credit: Newsflash

Brit socialite Maxwell, 63, is serving 20 years in Florida after being convicted of offences including sex trafficking. The meeting came after President Donald Trump faced questions over his own links to Epstein, who killed himself in jail awaiting trial in 2019. A source, quoted by The Mail on Sunday, said: 'Ghislaine has never told her story to anyone in government before. 'At times it was very emotional but she answered every question asked of her. 'She was asked about a list of people including Prince Andrew, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, Alan Dershowitz and powerful Wall Street financiers. 'It's ironic that Elon Musk kicked this whole thing off when he fell out with Trump and then made that post on X about Trump allegedly preventing the release of the full Epstein documents as some sort of 'cover-up'.
