She says she went back to the store in Istanbul to return the items and offered to pay.
But despite this, she was detained and accused of shoplifting.
Nelmes, who is a rising name in the Bristol comedy scene, took to social media to explain the incident.
"On Tuesday I left a Zara store in Istanbul without paying for items," she said.
"I returned straight away and handed the items to staff. I was asked to pay and I said I would and the manager accepted this.
"To cut a long story short I was then taken to a locked room where hours later after no communication from anyone I was taken away by police and held in a police station and was asked to sign things I couldn't read.
"I was put in a prison cell for 24 hours with no food or toilet facilities.
"When I asked for water, I was told they didn't understand me."
Nelmes was brought before a judge the next day, who permitted her release but barred her from leaving Turkey.
She now faces a potential three-year prison sentence.

The comedian is required to stay in the country while the incident is under investigation.
She has appealed to the public for support in the wake of the incident, fearing she might lose her home back in Britain.
The ongoing proceedings are leading to her losing work and income.
Nelmes has been unable to afford accommodation in Turkey given she had only come for a short holiday but now finds herself banned from leaving.
However, she was offered a place to stay by locals.
She added: "I am ok and have been taken in by a Turkish family who have given me a bed and food.
"I don't deserve all the kind words from people but I am very grateful."
The British Embassy has confirmed it is offering support.
It comes after a British tourist was dragged out of a holiday bar and beaten by staff after allegedly refusing to pay a £460 drinks bill.
Footage from abar in Thailand's Chiang Mai city shows the holidaymaker being manhandled.
The 26-year-old solo traveller was reportedly charged an inflated 20,000 baht - around £460 - for drinks at the Diamond Karaoke Bar.

French police stand watching as boat load of migrants set off for UK

French police officers have been spotted idly watching on as a group of migrants attempted to cross the Channel in a small boat. A group of cops, decked out in full riot gear including helmets, shields and batons, seemingly stood by as people boarded a smuggler's inflatable dinghy on Gravelines beach in northern France earlier today. Shockingly, one officer even appeared to be taking a selfie moments after the boat set sail towards the English coast. As the sun begins to set, the officers then saunter off just as another group wearing fluorescent life jackets and carrying bags start making their way to the water's edge. French President Emmanuel Macron had promised a tougher approach to cracking down on small boat crossings to the UK following a three-day state visit to the country earlier this month. But police patrolling the French coast do not appear to be upholding the same sentiment. Earlier this month officers again appeared to make zero effort to stop one boat packed with migrants as they were instead seen handing out lifejackets to those on board before it motored off. Nearly 24,000 small boat migrants have arrived in the UK so far this year - sparking further condemnation towards Prime Minister Keir Starmer after he vowed to tackle smuggling gangs in the Labour's General Election manifesto. Last week it was revealed that officials are now planning to use AI to check migrants' ages after shocking figures showed four out of 10 who claimed to be children were lying. The Home Office last week announced testing on new technology will begin later this year with the hope it could be fully integrated into the asylum system in 2026. There have long been fears that some of those who cross the Channel in small boats - who often don't carry official documents such as passports - are wrongly claiming to be children. Unaccompanied minors are more likely to be granted asylum than adults, with some suspected to be faking their ages in a bid to boost their chances of staying in the UK. A staggering 1,305 of those caught lying about their age were from Afghanistan, in a bid to get special protection in the UK. Child refugees cannot be deported and have the right to the same healthcare, education and sustenance as British children. It comes as the number of people per small boat has reached record levels this year, with insiders warning it is 'a matter of time' before one sinks from overcrowding. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is worried about women and children being 'crushed at sea' and told the Daily Mail: 'If you storm a boat, trampling over the bodies of tiny children, you are complicit in putting other people in danger.'

Two men who died after stabbing in central London named as father and son

Terry McMillan, 58, from Chislehurst, Bromley, was pronounced dead at the scene after reports of multiple stabbings inside a commercial property in Long Lane, Southwark, the Metropolitan Police said. His son, Brendan McMillan, 27, later died in hospital. Two other men were treated for stab wounds and taken to hospital, police said previously. Police said on Tuesday that a crime scene remains in place (James Manning/PA) Earlier on Tuesday, police said a 31-year-old man, who is a British citizen and was initially detained in connection with the incident, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of murder. He remains in hospital and his condition is not life-threatening, they added. Old Colfeians Rugby Club paid tribute to Brendan McMillan as 'a member of our family' and his father as a 'long-time supporter and sponsor of the club'. The club posted on Instagram saying: 'Yesterday, Old Colfeians lost a member of our family, one of the kindest, funniest, most genuine people you could ever meet. 'Brendan lit up every room he walked into, forever smiling, always cracking a joke and always full of life. His absence will be deeply felt for a long time to come. We will miss him more than words can say and we'll always carry his memory with us. 'We are also mourning the loss of his beloved father, Terry, a long-time supporter and sponsor of the club. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.' Police reiterated that the incident took place inside a business premises, and that a crime scene is in place at a nearby hotel the arrested man entered. Speculation that the man was staying at the hotel is not accurate, the force said. Anyone with information has been asked to call 101 or report it online.
