Park woodland damaged by arson, fire service says
A large woodland fire described by fire crews as "senseless" and "heartbreaking" is thought to have been started deliberately.
Fire crews and wildlife specialists were called out to Brierley Forest Park, in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, during the early hours.
Firefighters said an area of forest, undergrowth and woodland had been damaged and the fire was thought to have been started deliberately.
"A beautiful forest has been damaged," it added. Wildlife habitat has been destroyed."
It said on a social media post: "This is not just senseless - it's heartbreaking.
"A beautiful forest has been damaged. Wildlife habitat has been destroyed.
"And the cost, both environmental and financial, is huge."
The fire service urged anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or have any idea who might be responsible to contact police.
The park - on the site of Sutton Colliery, which closed in 1989 - was created in 1992.

The Pineville Police Department has arrested a man accused of barging into an elderly couple's home, raping one of them and then setting the house on fire, all one week after he released from jail while on parole in another case, according to a news release. The department had issued a plea to the public for help finding the person responsible for the June 20 incident in the 100 block of Hilton Court. "During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the suspect entered the home armed with a handgun, robbed the elderly homeowners, and demanded both money and firearms," reads the release. "In the course of this violent encounter, the suspect sexually assaulted one of the victims and intentionally set the home on fire, before fleeing the scene." Chief Roy Fore said the "heinous and unspeakable act of violence has deeply impacted our community. We will utilize every available resource to ensure this individual is held accountable for his actions." Boy to go on trial accused of murdering Harvey Willgoose, 15, at school
A 15-year-old boy who stabbed another teenager at a school is due to go trial accused of murder. Harvey Willgoose, also 15, died after he was stabbed through the heart at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield on February 3. A teenager, who cannot be named, has admitted Harvey's manslaughter but denies murdering the Sheffield United fan and will go on trial at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday. The boy, who cannot be named, has also admitted possession of a bladed article. The incident at the school in February shocked Sheffield and the nation. Harvey was remembered as a 'social butterfly' who 'deserved so much more' and 'had dreams, plans and a future ahead of him' at his funeral in February. The service was broadcast on a big screen outside the building for those who could not fit inside, and some mourners wore T-shirts with pictures of Harvey's face and anti-knife crime slogans. His cousin Lana Swirles told the congregation: 'His laughter was contagious and his kindness knew no bounds. 'His adventurous spirit inspired us to enjoy life and seek out joy in the little things.' The service heard how he loved fishing with his grandfather, was 'never far from a scrape' and his mother Caroline recalled that as a little boy his catchphrase was: 'Isn't it a lovely day?' She told mourners: 'One of Harvey's great gifts was his love of people, his kindness to others and his ability to talk to anyone.' Sheffield United was 'the great love of Harvey's life', the service was told, and his coffin was wrapped with a Bramall Lane design. Harvey's parents have been prominent campaigners against knife crime since their son's death and they met Home Secretary Yvette Cooper about the issue in March.

Police respond to 2nd bobcat encounter in southeast Calgary, woman left injured
A woman in the southeast Calgary community of Parkland was injured following an encounter with a bobcat on Sunday, according to police. Officers responded around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday after receiving "reports of a bobcat attack" from witnesses, said acting Calgary police staff sergeant Mike Sushelnitsky. "From the investigation, it looked like the pedestrian received some minor injuries and was treated at hospital after they took themselves there," he said. The incident follows a bobcat encounter that left a woman injured in Parkland on June 23. Sushelnitsky did not comment on whether the two incidents could be related. "It's unknown what provoked this attack," said Sushelnitsky, who pointed to Parkland's proximity to Fish Creek Provincial Park as a potential factor behind wildlife encounters. Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services responded to the scene alongside the Calgary Police Service, Sushelnitsky said. CBC News has reached out to Fish and Wildlife for comment on the latest bobcat encounter. The June 23 incident had involved a bobcat with kittens, leading Fish and Wildlife to call it an isolated, chance encounter" and conclude the mother had "appeared to act defensively," according to a statement sent to CBC News at the time.
