Rashid Shaheed's 70-yard touchdown catch is the Saints Play of the Day

USA Today12 hours ago

We're up to Day 70 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener, which means our pick for the Saints Play of the Day is this 70-yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Rashid Shaheed. You can see the play here, but the whole highlight reel is worth watching. The Saints routed the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2 last season. Hopefully they can do the same when the Arizona Cardinals visit this September.
It was a great play by all involved. Carr executed the play action fake and drove upfield, stepping up in the pocket under pressure; he took a big hit from rookie defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa after the throw, but it was worth it. His pass hit Shaheed in stride and the receiver strode untouched into the end zone with a pair of Cowboys defenders trailing him.
This gave the Saints a lead they wouldn't relinquish. By the end of the afternoon, they outscored the Cowboys 44-19 and outgained Dallas by 432 yards to 353. It was everything we hoped to see out of them: an efficient passing attack (Carr only threw 16 passes, completing 11 of them for 243 yards) and effective running game that attacked the defense from all angles. The defense buckled down and twice stopped the Cowboys on fourth down, too.
It's just a shame they couldn't sustain this success. Injuries hammered New Orleans and their season never returned to these heights, but on this afternoon in Week 2? Things were good, and Shaheed's big play was a big part of it.

Pickens' Drama in Dallas gets first episode out of the way before training camp

When the Dallas Cowboys first acquired George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers, many decried the move as desperate and a controversy waiting to happen. Pickens had a well-earned reputation for a certain degree of drama over the years. Incidents in college impacted his draft stock and incidents in the NFL reaffirmed those concerns, ultimately contributing to his trade. Playing in the bright lights of Dallas has a way of magnifying things, both good and bad. Many felt it would only be a matter of time before some sort of controversy arose with the Cowboys' newest weapon. As fortune would have it, skeptics didn't have to wait long for validation. Pickens allegedly backed out of a previous commitment catching the ire of organizers of a Pittsburgh area youth camp. TruEdge Sports didn't mince words when they released a scathing statement about Pickens. They said his actions display a 'disappointing lack of accountability' that 'shows a disregard for the families and children who were excited to meet him.' They've since backed off such statements after clarifying their communication was filtered through his representation and not with the receiver himself. Clarification was good but, in some ways, it was too little too late for daily news cycle. The headlines had been printed, and the damage had been done. Anyone looking for controversy had found it, and the first bit of Pickens drama was officially in the books. Drama is far from foreign for Cowboys fans. Boisterous personalities like Dez Bryant and Terrell Owens regularly drew headlines for reasons other than catching the football. Distractions come with the territory 'round these parts, so it's safe to say as long as Pickens is getting along with his teammates and producing on the field, there's no reason to sound the alarm. The change in culture from Pittsburgh to Dallas is rather significant. Things like this may be cause for concern up in the Steel City but down in Big D they're old hat. If Pickens hasn't noticed, it's production on the field that matters on the Cowboys. It's why many fans have grown so irrationally frustrated with Dak Prescott's lack of success in the postseason and why after 30 years of struggles it's still somehow 'Super Bowl or bust' in Cowboys fan circles. It takes a lot to rock the boat in Dallas. Fans here are accustomed to drama and controversies; all they seem to care about is producing on the field and postseason success. If Pickens can provide that on the Cowboys, he'll notice patience runs extremely deep. AFC Team Reportedly 'Eyeing' Micah Parsons Trade With Cowboys

AFC Team Reportedly 'Eyeing' Micah Parsons Trade With Cowboys originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - The wild and wacky guesses continue to roll in on the future of Micah Parsons, and they all mangle the facts. Advertisement In recent days ... *A report suggests that the Dallas Cowboys and defensive star Parsons are "making progress," but can tell you that none of those involved can really confirm that there is much movement there. *NFL Network comes along suggesting a major change in what Parsons and owner Jerry Jones are planning on doing together. According to NFL Network, Parsons could seek a shorter extension than the Cowboys traditionally prefer so he can return to the market at age 29 or 30, and that the Cowboys might need to 'shave a year or even two off' of their offer to seal the deal. We're not sure why the Cowboys want to do that given that Parsons wants to lock in long-term. And, now we have a source explaining. Advertisement The Cowboys do not particularly want to do that. Nor does Parsons. The report, a source close to the negotiations tells is "simply not true.'' *And now? NESN in Boston is telling us that the New England Patriots are "eyeing'' the Parsons situation, presumably with some sort of a top-secret plan to trade for him. They write that the Patriots are "watching the market'' on Parsons, which, by the way, as we have been reporting for months is all about Parsons being interested in signing a lengthy five-year deal at around $40 million per season with the $200 million total helping to make him the highest-paid non-QB ever. Advertisement NESN plows on by quoting Pats coach Mike Vrabel's very generic comment about roster-building and pretending it has something to do with Parsons. 'Trying to always continually make the roster more competitive … that has to happen,' Vrabel said recently. Yes. Very generic. Nothing having to do with Parsons and the Cowboys. NESN concludes, however that Vrabel's "search may soon include some of the biggest names still waiting to get paid'' - like Parsons. The facts: As we write this, there is no movement. There is no change. Parsons wants to be a "Cowboy for Life.'' Nothing has changed. Cowboys Have Rivals On Notice For One Clear Reason

Cowboys Have Rivals On Notice For One Clear Reason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO — Dallas Cowboys fans have begged and pleaded in recent years for their team to make the gamble and go after a big name by trade or through free agency. A year ago, they infamously allowed Derrick Henry to sign with the Baltimore Ravens despite a perfectly clear avenue to pursue him. Advertisement This offseason, they made the necessary moves through free agency and the draft. However, they had not pursued any needle-moving players through those major acquisition periods. That all changed in May when the Cowboys traded for George Pickens, providing a major upgrade at the wide receiver position. This gives Dallas one of the most formidable duos on paper heading into next season. But the Cowboys are not the only ones aware of the enormity of this deal. Their aggressive maneuvering has their most staunch adversaries on notice. 'The spotlight is on him because I've talked with a lot of people around the league, including the NFC East. That Pickens trade has their full attention,' ESPN's Fowler said Saturday. Advertisement 'They believe that really does add a new dimension because he's one of the best contested ball-catchers in the entire league. If he can stay on the upright, keep that maturity sort of in check in a contract year, he'll do big things with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott.' The duality of Pickens' and Lamb's talents should blend together with brilliance. Lamb's precision as a route runner out of the slot combining with Pickens' downfield presence makes for a tantalizing air-raid punch. But if foes around the NFC East are taking notice, it's because they have done the same things to establish themselves as contenders. The Washington Commanders made trades for Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel at the star of the offseason while the Philadelphia Eagles have stretched their big moves over the last several years. A trade for A.J. Brown a few years back and the signing of Saquon Barkley a year ago made them undeniable in their quest for a title. Advertisement Time will tell if a similar fate awaits the Cowboys. Regardless, the trade for Pickens is reflective of that contending mindset and one that could pay off in a major way.
