BJP, NCP (SP) workers clash a day after altercation between Gopichand Padalkar, Jitendra Awhad

Indian Express11 hours ago
A day after an altercation broke out between BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad outside the Legislature campus, workers of both the parties engaged in a physical duel at the staircase of the legislative building.
On Thursday evening, a physical altercation broke out as workers from both the parties came face-to-face at the staircase of the legislative building. The incident has its roots in the altercation between Padalkar and Awhad on Wednesday evening at the parking area of the legislative building, where both allegedly abused each other.
Maharashtra assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar has sought a detailed report on the incident, after Awhad informed the Assembly about the threats he had received and claimed that the workers had come to target him.
'They were here to target me. But since I had gone out after my speech in the assembly, they found my workers and beat them,' he said. Narverkar directed that he will ensure safety of every MLA and a detailed report should be submitted to him.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the incident. 'The Speaker and the Chairman should take a serious note of it. I have requested them to take a strict action. This does not reflect the culture of the legislature,' he said.
Former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray demanded strict action against the goons. 'Those are not political workers, but goons. Is this what we have reduced to?' asked Thackeray.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Fadnavis, Awhad said, 'What's the use of becoming an MLA if they are not safe within the campus of the Legislature? If an accused under MCOCA can come to the legislative building, then it is important that authorities take serious note of it.'
Padalkar was called by state revenue minister and BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule after the NCP-SP delegation of Awhad and senior MLA Jayant Patil held a meeting with CM Fadnavis. 'The incident is unfortunate. I apologise to the Speaker and Chairman. I will speak to the media only after I have discussed the matter with the party leadership,' said Padalkar.

Bihar Assembly polls: Rahul Gandhi accuses BJP of trying to steal elections like in Maharashtra

The Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to hijack the electoral process in the upcoming Bihar Assembly election like it did in Maharashtra, alleged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, while addressing a public rally in Bhubaneswar on Friday (July 11, 2025). He further said the Election Commission of India (ECI) acted like a 'wing of the saffron party'. 'Yesterday, I was in Bihar. What we witnessed in Maharashtra, where elections were brazenly stolen, is now being repeated in Bihar. And this time, the ECI itself is part of the conspiracy. It is no longer functioning as an independent body. It is working at the behest of the BJP,' Mr. Gandhi said. He went on, 'In Maharashtra, between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, one crore new voters mysteriously appeared. To this day, no one knows who they are or where they came from. We have repeatedly asked the ECI to share the voter lists, to provide the videos, but they refuse.' 'Now, the same formula is being deployed in Bihar. Yesterday, along with leaders of the I.N.D.I.A. bloc, I told the people of Bihar clearly... We will not allow the BJP or the ECI to steal the election. We will stand firm to protect democracy,' said the Congress leader. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge too lambasted the ECI, alleging the constitutional body was not coming clean on the election process and not providing a level playing field for both ruling and Opposition parties. The voter list was being manipulated, he pointed out. Alleging that the BJP was attacking the Constitution and its leaders were undermining constitutional values, Mr. Gandhi said, 'The Constitution protects the poor, the farmers, and the workers. Nowhere does it say that this country belongs to Adani, Ambani, or Arabpatis (a handful of billionaires). Open the Constitution and read it — it clearly says that this country belongs to every citizen. Every citizen has the right to vote; the land of this nation belongs to its people — to the poor, to the farmers — not to a few wealthy individuals.' Continuing his tirade, the Congress leader said, 'Wherever we look, whether in Odisha or Chhattisgarh, one name keeps appearing: Adani, Adani, Adani. It seems Adani runs the government of Odisha and Adani controls Narendra Modi. And during the Jagannath Yatra in Odisha, when the sacred chariot rolls out and lakhs of devotees gather, the procession is paused for Adani and his family. That alone tells you everything you need to know about the Odisha government.' The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said that over 40,000 women have gone missing in Odisha. 'To this day, we don't know where these women have disappeared. Every single day, there is violence against women here. Every day, 15 women are raped in Odisha — and your government remains silent. It has no concern for women's safety, no concern for employment, no concern for the youth. This government only knows how to exploit you — it grabs your land, drains your resources, and ignores your pain,' Mr. Gandhi alleged. 'That is why we are here,' he continued. 'Whether it is me, the Congress President, or any leader of the Congress party — we are standing with you. We will not leave your side.' Taking a swipe at Congress leaders, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the 'Save the Constitution' rally organised by Mr. Gandhi and Mr. Kharge in Bhubaneswar was, in reality, 'just another instance of political tourism by the Congress prince'. 'This isn't about saving the Constitution,' Mr. Pradhan remarked. 'It's about saving Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party.' He further asserted that the Congress was rattled by the people's growing trust in the BJP's welfare-oriented governance in Odisha.

Ashwani Sharma returns as Punjab BJP working president; senior leaders see shift in party dynamics

AMRITSAR: The appointment of Ashwani Sharma as the Working President of the Punjab BJP has stirred expectations of a structural shake-up in the state unit. While the changes may seem to be under the guidance of current state president Sunil Jakhar, insiders believe the move could indicate a deeper shift in the party's internal power dynamics. Sharma's return has also led to speculation about whether the BJP high command is seeking to challenge Jakhar's leadership, or possibly preparing him for a bigger role in the Central government, considering his political experience. Senior BJP leader Dr Avtar Singh said that while Jakhar is a respected figure, his past with the Congress may have influenced his leadership style. 'It seems he couldn't run the state unit with the distinct approach expected of a BJP leader,' he said, adding that Sharma's familiarity with Punjab politics made him a natural choice to manage the party effectively. Former Amritsar BJP General Secretary Somdev Sharma also weighed in, stating that internal tensions could stem from differing leadership roles within the two parties. 'In the Congress, the state president is seen as the ultimate authority, but that's not the case in the BJP. Here, the General Secretary (Organisation), or Sangathan Maha Mantri, holds greater influence than the state president. This structural difference likely led to internal friction and may have prompted the party high command to appoint Ashwani Sharma to restore balance and direction within the Punjab unit. ' While a major reshuffle is not expected, aside from a few minor changes, sources suggest the real impact will be on BJP workers in the state who will take note of the leadership message. Meanwhile, during a meeting in Amritsar on Thursday, local leaders decided to approach Sharma with a request to launch a campaign seeking justice for the thousands of Hindus killed during the height of militancy in Punjab. 'The BJP has consistently demanded capital punishment for Congress leaders allegedly involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, but it remains silent on delivering justice to the thousands of Hindus who were killed during the years of terrorism in Punjab. Shockingly, some of the perpetrators have openly boasted about their involvement in these killings, yet the BJP has never uttered a word in response,' Somdev Sharma said.

‘Ungaludan Stalin' an election strategy by DMK to gain votes, says Palaniswami

MAYILADUTHURAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday said the 'Ungaludan Stalin' scheme, inaugurated by Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday, is nothing but an election gimmick by the DMK to gain votes. Otherwise why would he (Stalin) create such a scheme just before the election and not during the entire four years the DMK was in power, Palaniswami questioned while addressing a gathering at Sirkazhi during his statewide campaign, 'Urimaiyai Meetpom Makkalai Kaapom'. He said the DMK itself 'has accepted that it has failed to mitigate people's problems' during the last four years. He said, 'Stalin went from street-to-street, house-to-house during the election, collecting petitions from people. Now, he has initiated a scheme where people can file petitions. What happened to the petitions he collected? The DMK itself has accepted that it has failed to mitigate people's issues.' Responding to Stalin's comment that the AIADMK is allying with a 'religious party' (the BJP), Palaniswami questioned Stalin: 'How is the BJP a religious party only when it allies with the AIADMK?' He held up a photograph of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi sitting beside late BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee (former PM) when they were allies.
