US Open 2025: Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz confirmed for star-studded mixed doubles event
The mixed doubles championship will take place before the main tournament on August 19 and 20, where one million US dollars (£750,000) in prize money is at stake for the winners.
Raducanu and Alcaraz are one of six teams who have received wild cards so far and two further wild cards are set to be announced at a later date to take the overall number of teams competing to 16.
Eight of the total 16 pairs have received direct entry into the draw, including Emma Navarro and men's world No1 Jannik Sinner along with Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud.
British No1 Jack Draper is also in the main draw, paired with Paula Badosa and US duo Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul will play together in front of their home crowd.
Draper had initially been slated to play alongside the Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, but he will now play with Badosa, who was beaten by Katie Boulter in the first round at Wimbledon, after Zheng pulled out of the US Open having undergone elbow surgery.
He had not been listed under the 25 official applicants that the tournament announced a week ago, but he was confirmed on Tuesday to be half of one of the direct-entry pairs in the draw.
Other notable wild cards include 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic and Olga Danilovic, while two-time Grand Slam mixed doubles champion Venus Williams, who made her comeback to tennis at the Citi Open in Washington, DC, will compete with her compatriot Reilly Opelka.
Current US Open mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori have also received wild cards.
There are two more teams to be announced, according to the tournament, with the likes of Boulter and her Australian boyfriend Alex De Minaur, maverick Australian Nick Kyrgios and former world No1 Naomi Osaka, and the Italian duo Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti, both of who have made Grand Slam finals, waiting in the wings for a wild card.

His decision also leaves the door open for both de Minaur and Ben Shelton to overtake him in the rankings. And both stars are playing each other at the National Bank Open quarter-final. The duo will then have the opportunity to leapfrog Djokovic if they go on to win the tournament. This will see both reach a better seeding for the US Open. Djokovic's decision to withdraw also now places him under threat of losing his top eight ranking. While the 38-year-old has admitted grand slam titles are his main ambition going forward, dropping further in the ranking would be a huge blow to this quest. If he drops out of the eight, it opens him up to playing either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner before the quarter-final at the US Open. Emma Raducanu hires Francis Roig, longtime Rafael Nadal coach, through 2025
Emma Raducanu has hired Francis Roig, a longtime member of Rafael Nadal's coaching team, until the end of 2025. Roig, who worked with Nadal between 2005 and 2022, will join Raducanu for the start of the Cincinnati Open, which begins Aug. 7. Discussions with Roig began during Wimbledon, with a trial following Raducanu's third-round exit to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Raducanu, the world No. 33, has been without a permanent coach since Nick Cavaday stepped down in January. She has worked with Mark Petchey, the commentator and former coach of Andy Murray, on an informal basis, but has been seeking a formal coach with Petchey's broadcast commitments prohibitive to a full-time partnership. Raducanu has enjoyed an upswing in form during their work together, reaching the quarterfinals of Queen's, the Wimbledon warmup in London, and the semifinals of the Citi Open in Washington D.C. Roig worked alongside Nadal's principal coaches — the player's uncle, Toni, Marc Lopez and Carlos Moya — for all 22 of his Grand Slam titles. Novak Djokovic withdraws from the Cincinnati Open and will head to the U.S. Open without preparation
CINCINNATI — Novak Djokovic pulled out of the Cincinnati Open on Monday for what officially was listed as a 'non-medical' reason, meaning he will head to the U.S. Open without having played a match in about 1 1/2 months. The 24-time Grand Slam champion hasn't competed since losing in the Wimbledon semifinals to eventual champion Jannik Sinner on July 11. That straight-set defeat against Sinner at the All England Club came two days after the 38-year-old Djokovic took what he described as a 'nasty' and 'awkward' fall in the last game of his quarterfinal victory. Djokovic clearly was compromised against Sinner and unable to move at his best; he received treatment on his upper left leg from a trainer. Djokovic's withdrawal from Cincinnati follows his decision to sit out the Toronto Masters that concludes this week. He cited a groin injury for that absence. His previous event before Wimbledon was the French Open, where he also lost to Sinner in the semifinals. Djokovic will have no hard-court tournament preparation before the U.S. Open singles competition begins on Aug. 24. He has won four championships at Flushing Meadows, most recently in 2023. That was also his most recent Grand Slam trophy.
