US Open 2025: Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz confirmed for star-studded mixed doubles event
Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz have been confirmed as wild card entries in this year's US Open mixed doubles event. The mixed doubles championship will take place before the main tournament on August 19 and 20, where one million US dollars (£750,000) in prize money is at stake for the winners. Raducanu and Alcaraz are one of six teams who have received wild cards so far and two further wild cards are set to be announced at a later date to take the overall number of teams competing to 16. Eight of the total 16 pairs have received direct entry into the draw, including Emma Navarro and men's world No1 Jannik Sinner along with Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud. British No1 Jack Draper is also in the main draw, paired with Paula Badosa and US duo Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul will play together in front of their home crowd. Draper had initially been slated to play alongside the Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, but he will now play with Badosa, who was beaten by Katie Boulter in the first round at Wimbledon, after Zheng pulled out of the US Open having undergone elbow surgery. He had not been listed under the 25 official applicants that the tournament announced a week ago, but he was confirmed on Tuesday to be half of one of the direct-entry pairs in the draw. Other notable wild cards include 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic and Olga Danilovic, while two-time Grand Slam mixed doubles champion Venus Williams, who made her comeback to tennis at the Citi Open in Washington, DC, will compete with her compatriot Reilly Opelka. Current US Open mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori have also received wild cards. There are two more teams to be announced, according to the tournament, with the likes of Boulter and her Australian boyfriend Alex De Minaur, maverick Australian Nick Kyrgios and former world No1 Naomi Osaka, and the Italian duo Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti, both of who have made Grand Slam finals, waiting in the wings for a wild card. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Anna Kalinskaya outclassed Britain's Emma Raducanu 6–4 6–3 at the Washington Open on Saturday to advance to the final, where she will face Leylah Fernandez. After a strong start from both players, Kalinskaya secured the first break to lead 5–4 and served out the opening set, handing Raducanu her first dropped set of the tournament. The two exchanged early breaks in the second set before the Russian pulled ahead once more, taking a lead that proved decisive and breaking again to seal the win. Having denied fans a rematch of the 2021 U.S. Open final between Raducanu and Fernandez, Kalinskaya will now aim to capture her first WTA 500 title in Sunday's final. "It was an interesting match. It's nice to play against Emma," world number 48 Kalinskaya said. "I'm proud of myself. I stayed aggressive and stuck to my plan." Earlier, Fernandez came from a set down to defeat third seed Elena Rybakina 6–7(2) 7–6(3) 7–6(3) in a marathon battle marked by dominant serving from both players. Rybakina edged a tight first set, gaining the upper hand in the tiebreak with two clutch return winners. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. As in the opener, neither player dropped serve in the third set, but Fernandez grew in confidence and secured victory in three hours and 12 minutes to reach her first final of the season. On the men's side, seventh seed Alex de Minaur blew hot and cold in his semi-final meeting with Corentin Moutet but was able to grind out a 6-4 6-3 win over the lucky loser. "It wasn't pretty tennis, but I knew it was going to be a tricky match without a lot of rhythm... I had the mentality of doing whatever it took to get into the title match tomorrow," said De Minaur, who also reached the final in D.C. in 2018. De Minaur will also return to the top 10 after reaching the final, where he will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, a 6-2 7-5 winner over Ben Shelton. REUTERS

Norris snatches Spa pole; Verstappen wins sprint
DPA Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) Briton Lando Norris continued his resurgence by seizing pole position on Saturday for the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix. The McLaren man had won the last two races to close the gap at the top of the standings to his team-mate Oscar Piastri. He has the chance to do it again on Sunday, with the Australian second on the grid. It was a first McLaren pole at Spa since 2012. 'The car has been flying all weekend, Oscar has been doing a good job so we have been pushing each other which is good. It is a good but tough battle we are having at the moment,' Norris said. Rain is forecast for the Ardennes Forest on Sunday at one of the drivers' favourite tracks on the calendar. 'I'd prefer it to stay dry to be honest - it would be nice to have a dry Sunday,' Norris added amid memories of many rainy days in Belgium. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was third fastest and Dutchman Max Verstappen, who won the sprint race a few hours before qualifying, was fourth in the Red Bull. Alex Albon was fifth quickest in the Williams ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell. Championship leader Piastri had been quickest in Friday practice and sprint qualifying but played second fiddle on Saturday. 'The second lap was coming together really well and I just made a little mistake in (turn) 14. It is fine margins out there,' Piastri said. Briton Hamilton, who started 18th and finished 15th in the sprint race, was punished for exceeding track limits and had his final time chalked off.
