Two Ohio State players named to the 2025 Bronko Nagurski preseason watch list
Safety Caleb Downs, who is pretty much on every single preseason watch list he's eligible for, was among the players named, as was linebacker Sonny Styles. The Nagurski is awarded to the player judged to be the best defensive player in college football annually and has been handed out by the Charlotte Touchdown Club in conjunction with the FWAA. The Trophy has been around since 1993, with two OSU players having won the award. Current Ohio State assistant coach James Laurinaitis won the Trophy in 2006, and defensive end Chase Young took it home in 2019.
Downs should get plenty of consideration and might be the favorite to take it home before the season starts. He was a unanimous All-American last year after transferring from Alabama. He has been named to every single preseason first-team All-American team for 2025 so far.
Styles is entering his senior year after really coming on at the tail-end of last season. He was second on the team with 100 tackles and could have a major breakout year with his athleticism continuing to catch up with the game coming to him more at the linebacker position. He's been recognized on several preseason All-American teams so far as well.
The list can and will change throughout the year, with additional players being added as performance dictates. The Trophy will be awarded on December 8 at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Kirby Yates hits the IL with back injury as Dodgers' bullpen depth tested again
Kirby Yates' frustrating season has hit its latest hurdle, as the Los Angeles Dodgers veteran reliever was placed on the injured list with lower back pain on Friday. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters in Tampa that Yates was dealing with a pelvic issue. Yates went back to Los Angeles for further testing. Advertisement The 38-year-old right-hander has not had the season he envisioned after the Dodgers signed him to a one-year, $13 million deal late this offseason to reinforce a bullpen they hoped they wouldn't have to add to at this year's trade deadline. Instead, the Dodgers made deals to acquire relievers and two that they wound up adding — veteran Brock Stewart from the Minnesota Twins and rookie Paul Gervase from the Tampa Bay Rays — officially joined the Dodgers as Yates hit the shelf. Yates has a 4.31 ERA through 39 appearances with the Dodgers this season. He also missed time in May with a hamstring issue. The two-time All-Star said recently he lost the feel for his signature splitter shortly before that injury. The search for the pitch has been maddening ever since. 'It's a pitch that — I've never really struggled with it,' Yates said last week. 'I wouldn't call before a struggle, but sometimes it would just be off, but never for a sustained period of time. It's probably like an outing or two. Right before I got hurt, ever since I've come back, I don't have the feel for it. Haven't had the feel for it.' Opposing hitters have hit .278 and slugged .519 against the pitch in 2025, way up from his 2024 marks (.114 batting average, .139 slugging percentage). Given his struggles, Yates has largely pitched in lower-leverage situations for the last week even as the Dodgers' big free agent signing, Tanner Scott, hit the shelf with forearm trouble. The Dodgers bullpen, which has logged the most innings in baseball, only recently got Blake Treinen back from the IL and has been undermanned most of this season. Evan Phillips is out for the year after Tommy John surgery. Injuries have limited Michael Kopech to seven innings. The team is still holding out hope that Brusdar Graterol could be an option after offseason shoulder surgery. Now, a painful back issue Roberts said has plagued Yates for weeks adds another variable into the mix.

The Commanders are coming, one way or another. Pony up, taxpayers.
I'm not in the predictions business, but to those of you hoping and praying that the Washington Commanders will come back to D.C., I offer this: Let not your hearts be troubled. The Commanders, who can't wait to flee Landover, Maryland, will undoubtedly come to rest on the last remaining large, undeveloped tract of District land, to wit: 180 acres commonly known as the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium Campus. Yes, Washington's football team will, like the Prodigal Son, come back to the city it abandoned in 1997, settling into a first-class, 65,000-seat, state-of-the-art, spanking-new stadium with a roof and supporting facilities and infrastructure for use as a franchise member of the NFL whose total value has been estimated at around $190 billion. The Commanders franchise alone weighs in around $6.3 billion as of August 2024 — so, unlike the Prodigal Son, it won't return spent and emptyhanded.

Jake Retzlaff still loves BYU but expresses faith in his fresh start at Tulane
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jake Retzlaff is embracing some new nicknames. 'BYJew' is an endearment of the past. Now, 'Kosher Cannon,' 'Shabbat Shotgun' and 'Bayou Jew' are among the monikers mentioned by the sizeable Jewish community at Retzlaff's new school, Tulane. It's a fresh start for Retzlaff, but one the former BYU quarterback wasn't necessarily seeking until May, when he was named in a since-dismissed civil sexual assault lawsuit. Retzlaff maintains that he loved playing for the Cougars, despite being one of very few Jews on BYU's predominantly Mormon campus in Provo, Utah. 'BYU was an amazing place. It made me into an amazing human being. I feel like it helped me grow in so many ways on and especially off the field,' Retzlaff said, wearing a Star of David on a chain around his neck. 'It helped me connect stronger with my faith than I did before, because I was in a place where it was so faith-oriented that it was just right in front of you.' Retzlaff went 11-2 as a starter for a 2024 BYU team that finished the season at No. 13 in the final AP Top 25 Poll. His decision to withdraw came while he reportedly faced a suspension for acknowledging what he described as a consensual sexual relationship while defending himself against the lawsuit. The university's honor code requires students to abstain from premarital sex. Speaking on Friday for the first time since arriving at Tulane about a week ago, Retzlaff declined to address the factors that led him to leave BYU, where he spent the past two years. 'I'm just worried about where my feet are,' Retzlaff said. 'I'm just worried about this next chapter, being at Tulane, winning football games.' Tulane coach Jon Sumrall said the university's administration vetted Retzlaff before clearing the way for Sumrall to bring him to the Green Wave, where he'll now have to outperform three other transfer QBs — Kadin Semonza from Ball State, Donovan Leary from Illinois and Brendan Sullivan from Iowa — to win the starting job. 'I was very transparent with the guys in the (quarterback) room. I was also very up front with Jake,' Sumrall said. 'None of them were promised anything in regards to who's going to start.' Retzlaff said he had other offers, but remembered fondly his recruitment by the then-coach of Troy in 2023 — Sumrall. Retzlaff recalled telling his father, Steve, that he could envision playing for Sumrall one day. 'I knew he's a guy I want to be around,' Retzlaff said. Tulane didn't have a scholarship available for Ratzlaff, but the 22-year-old graduate transfer said that being a walk-on suits him because he plays with a chip on his shoulder and doesn't want to be short-sighted about money at the expense of setting himself up for long-term success. 'I know that I'm going to get what I deserve, hopefully, at the next level,' Retzlaff said. 'If that means sacrificing a little bit of money on my side (now) .. so what? Let's go win football games.' First, he has to learn a new offense, which he said has meant a lot of late nights. He also is working to acclimatize himself to oppressively hot, heavy air of swampy south Louisiana in the summer, even wearing a sweat absorbent wrist band on his throwing arm for the first time. 'I'm soaked right now,' he said after practice, contrasting his new home to the cooler, mountainous, semi-arid Salt Lake area. 'I haven't sweat this much in my life.' One adjustment he won't mind is being on a campus where around 40% of students are Jewish. 'It's a cool deal. It's so opposite' from BYU, Retzlaff said. 'My faith is super important to me. So, that fact just made it that much sweeter to come here.' He said he's felt welcome in the locker room as well. 'The guys have been nothing but great to me — every guy on the team and especially the quarterback room,' Retzlaff said, noting that he has tried to eat each meal of each day with different players in an effort to get to know them better. Whoever plays quarterback for Tulane will do so for a team that has appeared in three straight American Conference title games, but also had a lot of turnover after last season — including the loss of one-year starter Darian Mensah to Duke in the transfer portal. Sumrall not only isn't projecting Mensah's replacement, but said he might play two quarterbacks in the Green Wave's season opener against Northwestern in New Orleans on Aug. 30.
