Supreme Court extends stay on summons against Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government has accused Lok Sabha leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi of deliberately indulging in "spread of hatred and enmity within the society through pre-planned actions". This has been submitted by the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government in the Supreme Court opposing a plea filed by Gandhi seeking quashing of summons issued to him by a Lucknow Magistrate for making alleged adverse remarks against Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar Urging the SC to dismiss Gandhi's plea, the UP government, in its response, submitted that the magistrate "properly applied judicial mind to facts and evidence, determining a prima facie case under Section 153-A and 505 IPC". The said summons were issued by a Lucknow Magistrate on December 12, 2024.Meanwhile, the top court on Friday extended the stay of summons issued to Gandhi in a criminal case initiated against him for his remarks against Savarkar. A bench headed by Justice Dipankar Datta listed the case after four weeks after the complainant, Nripendra Pandey, a Lucknow resident, sought time to file his response to the plea filed by Gandhi. The SC in April this year had stayed the summons issued to Gandhi but took strong exception to his remarks that Savarkar was a "collaborator" with the British who received pension from them.A division bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan had (in April) remarked that Gandhi's statements were "irresponsible". The bench had also warned that if Gandhi repeated similar remarks in the future, the bench will initiate suo motu action against him.

A day after Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde extended support to his party colleague and Minister of State (Home) Yogesh Kadam, who has been facing flak over connections with a dance bar, opposition Congress Monday questioned whether Shinde's Hindutva allows running dance bars. 'How can Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde justify supporting a dance bar? Kadam had landed in controversy after a dance bar named Sawali in Kandivali was being operated under a licence held by his mother. 'Shinde shamelessly defended a minister who is linked to a dance bar This is the height of brazenness. If not for public decency, at least have some conscience,' said Sapkal. Sapkal said, 'On one hand, they claim to be brothers to their beloved sisters benefited under Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme, and on the other hand, they support dance bars that shatter those very sisters' lives—how can they do this with a straight face? Minister Yogesh Kadam must be dismissed from the cabinet.' Meanwhile, Sena leader Sheetal Mhatre slammed Sapkal saying he should not dare to talk ill about Shinde. 'Sapkal should avoid making such unsubstantiated allegations. His words have no truth and if he keeps on making such statements then he will face the wrath of Shiv Sena's women wing,' said Mhatre.

Punjab CM Mann seeks peoples support in war against drugs
Agency: PTI Khatkar Kalan (Punjab), Jul 28 (PTI) Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday urged people to support the state government's efforts to make Punjab drugs and corruption free as a befitting tribute to martyr Bhagat Singh. Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation for Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Heritage Complex here, Mann said the state government has launched a crusade against drugs and corruption. 'The big fish involved in these crimes have been put behind bars," Mann claimed. The war against drugs and corruption has also exposed the 'ugly face of the traditional parties which have been hand-in-glove with each other to plunder the state", the chief minister said. According to an official statement, Mann said the war against drugs and corruption can only be successful if the people of the state play a proactive role in it. The state government is making concerted efforts to realise the dreams of 'Shaheed-e-Azam' Bhagat Singh to ensure that the fruits of freedom are percolated to every household, the statement quoted Mann as saying. It is unfortunate that even after more than 75 years of Independence, the benefits of freedom have still not reached every household, he said. 'Those in power misused freedom to spread the tentacles of 'chitta' (adulterated heroin), amass wealth by plundering the masses, and encouraged corruption along with other menaces," he said. Mann also said that the nation will always be indebted to Bhagat Singh, who sacrificed his life at a very young age for freeing the country from the clutches of British imperialism. 'We must follow his footsteps for the progress of the country," he said.
