Gawai's Ngiling Bidai promotes unity, cultural heritage, says PDP man
BINTULU (June 14): The Ngiling Bidai ceremony, which marks the end of the Gawai Dayak celebration, serves as a meaningful platform to showcase and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Dayak community, said Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Samalaju chief Hillary Mawan Antar.
He highlighted that the event, which brings together people from diverse backgrounds, plays a vital role in strengthening community ties and promoting mutual understanding among Sarawak's multi-ethnic population – reflecting the spirit of Segulai Sejalai (Together in Unity).
'This reflects the importance of unity and national integration, which are essential in building a peaceful and stable nation,' he said in his welcoming remarks at the Ngiling Bidai 2025 Dinner, at Dinner World, Bintulu Sentral on Thursday.
The event, themed Segulai Sejalai, was officiated by Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, who is also Bintulu MP, Dudong assemblyman, and PDP president.
Hillary also stressed that such gatherings offer valuable opportunities for people of different ethnicities to connect and engage with one another.
'This event is in line with the unity initiatives under Malaysia Madani and helps to foster a spirit of togetherness, symbolised through Segulai Sejalai,' he said. Gawai lead Ngiling Bidai PDP

NCR land: Activist tells Nurul Izzah to back up words with action
Peter John Jaban KUCHING (July 1): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar should follow up on her comments on Sarawak's Native Customary Rights (NRC) lands by engaging with affected communities and other stakeholders, said Peter John Jaban. While thanking Nurul Izzah for her concern, the rights activist however said such issues have existed for decades, yet has drawn little attention from the federal government. 'If these are the same concerns Nurul Izzah is raising in 2025, the question that must be asked is, why only now? 'For years, NCR landowners have fought alone in the courts, on logging roads, in far-flung longhouses, without legal access or media coverage. Where was the federal attention then?' he told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday. He was asked to comment on Nurul Izzah's recent statement calling for faster action on surveys and ownership approvals of NCR land in the state, and for a halt to the issuance of new licences on disputed land. Peter said despite Nurul Izzah having held public office and speaking out on various national issues, her engagement on indigenous land issues, particularly in Sarawak, has been minimal. 'Still, her concern is valid to NCR landowners, but concern without clarity is not good enough.' He said without meaningful engagement with Dayak-based organisations or other land rights defenders, her words risk appearing 'superficial, a headline rather than a helping hand'. Nurul Izzah, stressed Peter, ought to meet with NCR landowners and civil society organisations, while also pushing for the reform of state-federal frameworks to ensure that native land rights are respected and 'not just surveyed for administrative convenience'. 'For her advocacy to matter, it must now be backed by real engagement,' he said, adding that Nurul Izzah's influence at the federal level could amplify the realities that local communities have long been trying to highlight. He went on to say that since the perimeter survey programme under Section 6 of the Sarawak Land Code began in 2010, civil society groups, lawyers, and native leaders have raised serious questions about its transparency, implementation, and implications. Iban community the heart of Sarawak's heritage and soul, says Bawang Assan rep
SIBU (June 30): The Iban community represents the heart of Sarawak's heritage and soul, said Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh. Wong, also the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice-president, highlighted that the culture, spirit, and strong family values upheld by the Iban community continue to strengthen the broader community. 'Let us continue to work together beyond race, religion, and region for a more united, prosperous, and harmonious Sarawak,' he said while officiating at the Ngiling Bidai ceremony at Rumah Munie, Bukit Besai here on Saturday night. The ngiling bidai which marks the closing of the Gawai Dayak celebration is not merely a custom but a reflection of the identity, resilience, and dignity of the Iban community, he remarked. 'It is a reminder that even though times have changed, our cultural roots remain our guide and strength, and as a Sarawakian, I am very proud that we live in a society of various races and religions, yet we remain united. 'We not only celebrate our own festivals, but also appreciate and celebrate the cultures and festivals of other communities with great respect,' he added. Wong expressed his appreciation to the Iban community in Bukit Besai for their dedication to preserving and continuing this cherished tradition. 'Culture is not just history. It lives, it grows, and it unites us. While we value culture, we must also look forward,' he emphasised, while reaffirming his commitment to supporting rural development. 'As long as I am given the trust to serve, I will continue to champion inclusive development and ensure that no one is left behind,' he reiterated. Approximately 500 residents from the Bukit Besai area attended the event.
