Premier: Ngiling Bidai brings Sarawak's multiracial communities closer

KUCHING (July 1): 'Ngiling Bidai', a ceremony to mark the closing of the Gawai Dayak celebration, serves as an important platform to strengthen the unity of Sarawak's multiracial communities, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The Premier pointed out that at the same time, the ceremony—steeped in tradition—also enhances efforts to preserve the Dayak culture and ethnic heritage in Sarawak. 'This ceremony is not just a closing ceremony for Gawai Dayak as it is also a symbol of appreciation for the harvest, a spirit of kinship, and the strength of unity among the multi-racial communities in Sarawak,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit report. The text of Abang Johari's speech was delivered by Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee at the closing ceremony of the Gedong District Gawai Dayak celebration 2025, held here on Sunday. In his speech, the Premier said the involvement of 55 villages under Gedong District in the celebration showed the community's high level of cooperation and commitment in making the event a success. He also called on all parties to continue fostering the spirit of tolerance, mutual respect and cooperation for the development of a prosperous and peaceful state. During the ceremony, guests also participated in prayers to pay respect for Abang Johari's wife, the late Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma'ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, who passed away on June 23. Iban community the heart of Sarawak's heritage and soul, says Bawang Assan rep
SIBU (June 30): The Iban community represents the heart of Sarawak's heritage and soul, said Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh. Wong, also the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice-president, highlighted that the culture, spirit, and strong family values upheld by the Iban community continue to strengthen the broader community. 'Let us continue to work together beyond race, religion, and region for a more united, prosperous, and harmonious Sarawak,' he said while officiating at the Ngiling Bidai ceremony at Rumah Munie, Bukit Besai here on Saturday night. The ngiling bidai which marks the closing of the Gawai Dayak celebration is not merely a custom but a reflection of the identity, resilience, and dignity of the Iban community, he remarked. 'It is a reminder that even though times have changed, our cultural roots remain our guide and strength, and as a Sarawakian, I am very proud that we live in a society of various races and religions, yet we remain united. 'We not only celebrate our own festivals, but also appreciate and celebrate the cultures and festivals of other communities with great respect,' he added. Wong expressed his appreciation to the Iban community in Bukit Besai for their dedication to preserving and continuing this cherished tradition. 'Culture is not just history. It lives, it grows, and it unites us. While we value culture, we must also look forward,' he emphasised, while reaffirming his commitment to supporting rural development. 'As long as I am given the trust to serve, I will continue to champion inclusive development and ensure that no one is left behind,' he reiterated. Abdul Karim proposes annual MySED sports carnival to promote unity

KUCHING (June 29): Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MySED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has proposed that the MySED Sports Carnival be made an annual event, following the success of its inaugural edition. Speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today, he said the event has proven its potential and should be expanded to other major cities in Sarawak such as Sibu and Miri in future editions. 'This inaugural MySED Sports Carnival should not remain a one-off event but must be held annually and hosted in various major cities across Sarawak to further promote unity, fitness, and healthy competition among state agencies. It should only be the beginning. 'An event like this should not just be limited to Kuching every year. By rotating the host city, we allow more participation from other regions and foster closer ties between different zones and agencies under MySED,' he added when speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today. Abdul Karim said organising the carnival annually would help instill a consistent culture of sports and wellness among civil servants while providing opportunities to engage the public through friendly competition and recreational activities. He also extended his appreciation to the organising committee led by MySED Permanent Secretary Morshidi Frederick, as well as the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), for successfully delivering the event. 'I believe this is something we can consider funding through existing event grants, such as those under the Ministry of Tourism, to help support and sustain it in the coming years. 'This carnival is also not only about winning or losing. It's about togetherness, maintaining good health, and creating positive energy among our agencies,' he said. He concluded by saying that sports serve as a subtle yet effective means of reminding civil servants of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially when they are no longer involved in competitive athletics. 'To those who won, congratulations. But to those who didn't, your presence and participation made this carnival a success,' he said. The MySED Sports Carnival 2025 took place from June 27 to 29 at the Sarawak Sports Village and featured four zonal teams: Kras Panthers (Southern Zone), KMSS Midforce (Central Zone), Northern Crocs (Northern Zone), and Hornbill X-Troopers (combined SSC and MSNS). PBDS gears up for next state election, eyes suitable seats based on grassroots support

SIBU (June 29): Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) is preparing to contest in the next state election by targeting constituencies deemed suitable, based on grassroots support and the aspirations of its members. PBDS president Mejar (Rtd) Moses Ripai said the party is in the process of identifying potential candidates who meet its internal criteria and are capable of serving the people effectively. He said this during the PBDS Ngiling Bidai gathering held at his residence in Taman Permai here last night, which was attended by over 100 members and their families. Among the senior leaders present were deputy president Julius Enchana, secretary Kipli Ayom, Selangau PBDS chief Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun, Kanowit chief Datuk Paduka Michael Lias, Saratok chief Dato Linang Chapum, PBDS Orang Ulu representative Dr Elli Luhat and PBDS Bidayuh representative Dr Bayang Teron. Sarawak to prioritise critical, technical courses under FTES for now, says Sagah

While acknowledging the importance of other academic fields, Sagah said the initial focus must be on areas crucial to the state's economic development. 'I cannot make the decision myself, but what I can say is that next year's FTES will only cover critical courses. 'This is because we are seriously considering the urgent needs of Sarawak's industries,' he said. He was responding to a proposal by i-CATS University College Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emeritus Datuk Ts Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, during the institution's Gawai Celebration today, who had earlier called for the scheme to be expanded to include more disciplines. Sagah said the state government hopes to see tangible results from the initial phase of the scheme, particularly in workforce development and income growth for Sarawak. 'If successful, the scheme may be expanded. Hopefully, as more students enter the workforce and help boost the state's income, we can eventually look at including more courses beyond just the critical ones,' he added. Earlier in his speech, Mohamad Kadim proposed that FTES be extended to non-technical fields such as economics, business, hospitality, and tourism, arguing that these sectors also play a vital role in Sarawak's development. He highlighted the hospitality industry's ongoing reliance on workers from outside Sarawak, stressing the need to develop more local talent for the sector. He said by strengthening education in hospitality and tourism, there would be more opportunities for Sarawakians to fill the growing vacancies The FTES, set to be implemented in 2026, will initially cover undergraduate programmes in STEM fields, law, medicine, accounting, finance, and psychology.
