On 27 July 2015, India lost one of its most beloved public figures. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam collapsed mid-lecture at IIM Shillong and died shortly after from cardiac arrest. He was 83.The news hit hard. Not just in government offices or scientific circles, but in schools, homes and colleges across the country.Today marks nine years since that moment. A day people still recall with clarity and sorrow. As India pauses to remember him, his legacy remains more relevant than ever.Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. The youngest of five, his family led a modest life.
To support them, Kalam sold newspapers as a boy. He studied by lamp-light, often late into the night. He wasn't just a curious student, but a determined one.He earned a physics degree from St Joseph's College in 1954, then studied aeronautical engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology. Those early years weren't easy. But they shaped the man who would one day launch missiles and shape young minds.Kalam joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958. In 1969, he moved to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). That's where he led the team behind SLV-III, India's first satellite launch vehicle, which successfully placed the Rohini satellite into orbit. He returned to DRDO in the 1980s and headed the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. It was here that he helped develop the Agni and Prithvi missiles.
This earned him the title that would stick for life, the 'Missile Man of India'.
He also played a key role in planning and executing the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This put India firmly on the world's nuclear map. In 2002, Dr Kalam defeated Lakshmi Sahgal to become India's 11th President. He was the first Muslim to complete a full term in the post. And more significantly, he redefined the presidency. He made it about people. He travelled constantly, spoke to students, wrote books, and pushed conversations about science, education and development. He had a message, especially for the young:"Dream, dream, dream. Dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action."Many still call him the 'People's President'. Not as a label, but as a lived truth.Even after leaving Rashtrapati Bhavan, Kalam never slowed down. He kept writing, teaching, and speaking. His books like Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, and India 2020 remain popular.
He didn't just talk about change, he tried to make it happen. He worked with Dr Soma Raju to create a low-cost stent for heart patients, named the Kalam-Raju stent. He also championed rural healthcare, sustainable development, and youth leadership.Between 1992 and 1999, he was the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister and served as DRDO Secretary. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1981, the Padma Vibhushan in 1990, and the Bharat Ratna in 1997.Forty-eight universities and institutions awarded him honorary doctorates.Recognition never changed him. He remained simple, accessible and focused on the next generation. On the evening of 27 July 2015, Dr Kalam was at IIM Shillong, speaking on "Creating a Livable Planet Earth".Midway through his lecture, he collapsed. A massive heart attack took him away. His body was flown to Rameswaram. Thousands, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid their last respects. But he never really left. Not in spirit. His ideas still echo in classrooms, laboratories and policy debates.Dr Kalam believed in action. In learning. In resilience. He often shared this with young people. Here are some of his most memorable quotes, in his own words: "Never stop fighting until you arrive at your destined place, the unique you. Have an aim in life, continuously acquire knowledge, work hard, and have perseverance to realise the great life."
"Determination is the power that sees us through all our frustrations and obstacles. It helps us with building our willpower, which is the very basis of success."
"If you want to shine like a sun, first burn like a sun."
"Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success."
"Let us sacrifice today so that our children can have a better tomorrow."
"Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough."
"To succeed in your mission, you must have single-minded devotion to your goal."
"If you fail, never give up because FAIL means — First Attempt In Learning."
"Youth should not accept any compromise or lower their sights. A society that makes its youth crawl in conformity and enforces dogmas on their aspirations can never flourish."
"The best brains of the nation may be found on the last benches of the classroom."
"Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work."
"Those who cannot work with their hearts achieve a hollow, half-hearted success that breeds bitterness all around."
"Educationists should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurialism, and moral leadership among students and become their role models."
"We will be remembered only if we give to our younger generation a prosperous and safe India, resulting from economic prosperity coupled with civilisational heritage." Dr Kalam was a scientist. A teacher. A president. But above all, he was someone who believed in potential — especially in the potential of India's youth.Nine years since his passing, the country still draws strength from his life and his words. His vision was always bigger than the moment. And that is what continues to move people, to think, to act, and to believe in something better.

'Nazi' BJP Targeting 'Bengalis': TMC MP Mahua Moitra's Explosive Interview On Gurugram Crackdown

/ Jul 27, 2025, 10:47PM IST In an exclusive interview with TOI Bharat, TMC MP Mohua Moitra tore apart BJP for allegedly picking up Bengali migrant workers in states where the party rules under the garb of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. In a freewheeling chat with Aditi Prasad on the recent crackdown on Bangladeshi immigrants in Gurugram, Mahua Moitra alleges that due process have not been followed while detaining Bengali-speaking migrants despite showing identity proofs. Moitra says legal migrants are being picked up on the basis of language, hinting at a sinister ploy to persecute people from Bengal. She has also issued warning that the issue will blow up in the face of BJP which aims to wrest power from Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal in the 2026 assembly elections.#mahuamoitra #mahuamoitrainterview #mahuamoitraspeech #tmc #bjp #pmmodi #narendramodi #amitshah #mamatabanerjee #bengal #bengali #gurugrambengali #gurugrambangladeshi #bengalimigrants #bengaliimmigrants #bangladeshi #bangladeshiimmigrants #illegalimmigrants #rohingyas #bsf #murshidabadviolence #bengalelections #bengalassemblypolls #toi #toibharat #bharat #trending #breakingnews #indianews

Kalam's rise in life is a lesson for the nation, says ISRO chairman V. Narayanan

'From a paper delivery boy, late President APJ Abdul Kalam rose to become a nuclear scientist and missile man of India,' said V. Narayanan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation, here on Sunday. His remarks came on the occasion of the 10th Remembrance Day of Kalam. Mr. Narayanan said the prestigious Bharat Ratna award was not simply conferred on Kalam, but earned by the late President through his sincere hard work. Tracing his journey, he said the year 1969, when Kalam joined ISRO, was the same year when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. ISRO was at its nascent stage, when NASA was trying out various space projects. 'But we can proudly say that India, which began taking baby steps when America completed its space mission, is now looked upon by the world due to its space projects. Speaking about the situation at the time of Independence, he said about 97.5% of the population was in Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, and the average person's life expectancy was 32 years. 'It has increased now to 72 years, which shows our desire and will in developing our country.' The people's dreams at the time of Independence made the impossible possible. Kalam's rise from a village boy to one of the important personalities in the country was one such dream. It was not just his dream, but his country's dream. 'Kalam's success gave courage and lessons to many people like me to dream big and think big. If not for him, many of us would have just dreamt of distant targets,' he added. The book Wings of Fire, penned by Kalam, was the important reason for completing his Ph.D degree, which became one of the important technologies to operate the rockets of ISRO. The life lessons of Kalam should be taken seriously by students to not just work for themselves but also for their country, he added. 'The upcoming launch of NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar [NISAR] satellite from India is one such example the students should watch closely,' he further said. Mr. Narayanan paid tributes to Kalam's memorial at Peikarumbu near Rameswaram. Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon also paid his respects at the memorial.

Is India's good friend cheating it over jointly developed air defense system? The friend is..., it is selling DRDO's...,

New Delhi: India and Israel have had a strong defense partnership for the last several decades. But this is the first time that questions have been raised on the intentions of the friendly country. Allegations are being made that Israel is marketing and trying to sell this air defense system alone, which it had made in collaboration with India's DRDO. What is the advanced air defense system in question? Barak-8 is an advanced air defense system. This is the same system that intercepted and shot down a Pakistani missile in the sky in Sirsa, Haryana. It has been developed jointly by India's DRDO and Israeli company Israel Aerospace Industries. According to the latest reports, Israel is now trying to sell this missile to some countries of the world by giving it a new name of 'Barak-MX'. Barak-8 was an important milestone in the strategic relations between the two countries, but Israel's attempt to sell this missile alone is going to trouble India. Why could it affect DRDO's credibility? A website named has claimed that Israel has not included the technology developed by DRDO in the export variant of Barak-8 air defense system. Especially the dual pulse rocket motor has not been included by Israel in the variant being sold. Israel's attempt to do so hurts the hard work of DRDO, its capability and the name it is building in the defense sector as it has made many weapons based on indigenous technology for India. What is the contribution of Indian entities in this project? India started this project in 2006 with Israel at an initial cost of Rs 2500 crore with an aim developing advanced air defense systems for both countries. This air defense system was designed to intercept ballistic missiles, advanced drones, cruise missiles and fighter aircraft up to the fourth generation. Major Indian defense companies including Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) were involved in the production of essential parts of this system. In collaboration with Israel, India has developed an advanced air defense system, which has also proved its capability by shooting down the Pakistani ballistic missile Fateh-2 in the air. DRDO developed a special dual-pulse rocket motor for the Barak air defense system which gives the missile fired from this air defense system the ability to maintain its speed and change direction suddenly until it hits the target. Israel also got a huge defense market like India for this missile defense system. Why is Israel selling this system unilaterally under a different name? Despite this, Israel is selling this system unilaterally under the name 'Barak MX' for which it has signed a deal with Azerbaijan for 12 Barak air defense systems. In 2022, Israel had signed a deal worth $ 500 million with Morocco. The main point of contention is that the Barak air defense systems that Israel is selling do not have dual-pulse rocket motors, which have been developed by DRDO. Reportedly, Israel is talking to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) about the sale of Barak defense systems. Is Israel trying to bypass India? According to by using its propulsion system in the export model of the Barak Defense System, Israel is bypassing the help that India has provided at the technology level. Due to this, India is not getting any benefit in the global defense market. Apart from this, the situation is also not clear regarding the intellectual property and data rights related to this project, which raises questions on India's technical and economic participation. According to the report, Israel's doing this has put New Delhi into action. It is believed that if Israel tries to make partnerships on a unilateral basis, then both future strategic cooperation and trust in Israel may be affected. This may affect future defense agreements between the two countries.
