Senate session turns critical over budget
Issues affecting minority communities in Sindh and the ongoing situation in Balochistan also featured prominently in the session.
The house, chaired by Deputy Chairman Syedal Khan Nasir, briefly witnessed a boycott by opposition members due to the absence of any minister.
Debate on the budget resumed after the arrival of Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Chaudhry.
Senator Dinesh Kumar highlighted the alleged kidnapping of three girls and a boy from the minority community in Sindh. "It is being heard that these girls were being forcibly converted," he told the house, urging the Sindh police chief to take immediate notice of the incident.
Responding, the deputy chairman directed the Sindh chief secretary and inspector general of police to submit a report and further instructed that the officers meet Senator Kumar to address his concerns.
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Waqar Mehdi informed the house that "the girls had been recovered" and would be presented before the relevant court in Karachi. He assured that "there would be no discrimination against minorities".
Maulana Attaur Rehman endorsed Senator Kumar's concerns and called for accountability from the Sindh government. Senator Raja Nasir Abbas added: "There is no compulsion in religion and kidnapping of girls is wrong."
Senator Khalil Tahir Sindhu pointed out that the budget contained no allocations for minorities or interfaith harmony. The deputy chairman responded by advising him to take up the matter within his own party, since he belonged to the ruling coalition.
Senator Khaleda Ateeb raised the issue of a tragic dumper accident in Karachi that claimed the lives of a woman and her daughter. "Why is the dumper mafia so strong in Karachi?" she asked.
Senator Mehdi replied that the provincial government was making efforts to enforce traffic laws.
Senator Jan Muhammad Buledi urged the government to play a greater role in efforts to stop the Iran-Israel conflict. He warned that "Israel wanted to change the government in Iran and bring its puppets there".
He also criticised the budget for ignoring Balochistan, saying: "Balochistan cannot be ignored. We should have had a plan to fix the situation in Balochistan. Take Balochistan seriously."
In response, Law Minister Tarar reiterated that Balochistan was a high priority for the government and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

It is a challenging task owing to an uneasy peace at the 900 km long porous borders infected with insurgency. The signing of 12 agreements and MoUs amid an intention to go for a free trade agreement by 2027 needs walking the talk. Moreover, the desire to see connectivity flourish in wider regional interest, and to choreograph it through structured channels like the Joint Economic Commission (JEC), regular B2B exchanges, and sector-focused delegations was on the spot. Pakistan and Iran have been embedded in regional alliances and an unshakable political determination for decades to make strides, but they have fallen short of expectations. Pezeshkian's visit at a turning point of history when both the countries share common denominators of security and economic distress is a great feast, and must come to fortify ties to new heights, and that too without any prejudice to realpolitik.

Iran sets up new defence council after war with Israel
TEHRAN: Iran's top security body has approved the creation of a new defence council, state media reported on Sunday, more than a month after a ceasefire ended a 12-day war with Israel. 'The Supreme National Security Council approved the establishment of the National Defence Council,' state television said. The new body – which will be chaired by the president and include top military commanders among other senior officials and ministers – will be tasked with 'reviewing defence strategies' and 'enhancing the capabilities of Iran's armed forces', it added. 'Indo-Pak, Iran-Israel wars increase importance of Pakistan' On Friday, the Fars news agency said the decision comes as part of broader structural changes to Iran's security apparatus. The move comes in the wake of a conflict with Israel that, according to official figures, left more than 1,000 people dead in Iran and 29 in Israel. The war began on June 13, when Israel launched strikes on military, nuclear and residential sites in Iran. Iran responded with retaliatory attacks on Israeli territory. A ceasefire announced by the United States has been in place since June 24.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Sunday said Pakistan-Iran Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and platforms like the Business Forum are vital for strengthening bilateral trade and promoting collaboration across key sectors, including energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and technology. The foreign minister said this addressing the Pakistan-Iran Business Forum in Islamabad, in the presence of President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian and the accompanying high-level delegation, the Foreign Office said. Reaffirming the deep-rooted brotherly ties between Pakistan and Iran, the FM underscored Pakistan's commitment to enhancing economic cooperation and regional connectivity. He welcomed the positive momentum toward finalising the Pakistan-Iran FTA. 'The economic diplomacy is a cornerstone of Pakistan's foreign policy,' he emphasised. He also highlighted the importance of deepening people-to-people linkages to ensure the shared prosperity of both countries.
