
This New Test Could Diagnose Parkinson's With AI

A new artificial intelligence (AI) tool analyzing short smile videos achieved high accuracy in screening for Parkinson's disease (PD), according to research published by Tariq Adnan, M.Sc., and colleagues in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Thursday.
The model was trained on the largest known video dataset of facial expressions to date, enrolling 1,452 participants, including 391 living with PD.
An 87.9 percent overall accuracy in detecting PD using only smile video analysis, the NEJM AI study reported.
Researchers reported that the AI model could accurately distinguish between individuals with and without PD based on the analysis of their smiles, even when applied in diverse population samples from North America and Bangladesh.

The Parkinson's Foundation says an estimated 90,000 more people will be diagnosed this year, with the number of those suffering expected to be around 1.2 million by 2030.
Diagnosing Parkinson's disease early remains a significant challenge because of limited access to clinical expertise and in-person evaluations.
AI-driven remote screening tools promise scalable, cost-effective solutions to bridge these healthcare gaps.
The findings align with the growing demand for digital healthcare solutions that remove geographical and economic barriers to early neurological disease diagnosis, which is especially relevant to rural and underserved American communities.
What To Know
The new screening method invited participants to record themselves mimicking facial expressions—including a smile—using an online platform.
Research teams then extracted facial landmarks and measured action units to quantify hypomimia, a common motor symptom in PD where facial muscle movement is diminished.
Machine learning models were developed using these features, distinguishing people with PD from those without.
The approach relied on a broad recruitment strategy, involving participants from North America via social media, email, wellness centers, and research registries, alongside a high-risk cohort from Bangladesh.
Trained solely on smile videos, the model achieved a 10-fold cross-validated accuracy of 87.9 percent, a sensitivity of 76.8 percent, and a specificity of 91.4 percent. Validation in external test sets revealed 80.3 percent accuracy in a U.S. clinic dataset and 85.3 percent accuracy in the Bangladesh cohort.
While the negative predictive value remained above 92 percent in all settings, the positive predictive value dropped to 35.7 percent among the Bangladeshi participants, reflecting variations in population characteristics.
The study found no significant differences in model performance across sex and ethnic subgroups, except for marginally higher accuracy in female participants in Bangladesh.
The authors emphasized the generalizability and fairness of the approach, key considerations in the development of clinical AI tools.
The video-processing and machine-learning code supporting the study is available to the public on GitHub.
However, the study authors noted that raw video data sharing is restricted to comply with U.S. healthcare privacy law (HIPAA), limiting access to de-identified derivative features only.
The research received funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health, among other sources.
The work was a collaborative effort involving academic and clinical partners such as the InMotion Parkinson's Disease wellness center and the University of Rochester Center for Health and Technology.
The research process also benefited from contributions by staff at Google Research and the University of Rochester, particularly in statistical analysis.

In his 1986 book "Engines of Creation," engineer K. Eric Drexler — often called the godfather of nanotechnology — made a prediction. "The coming era of molecular machines will mean the end of many limits: the limit of scarcity, the limit of slow development, the limit of ignorance enforced by the lack of tools," he wrote. Reading those words a few years later, when he was 16, Matthew Putman started thinking. "Our bodies work as these little micro-machines where you have ribosomes and enzymes and things that are working and replicating and making things all the time, but our factories work the way that they've worked for the last hundred years," Putman told Business Insider he thought at the time. He wondered how a world would look "where you don't have large assembly lines, you don't have smokestacks, you instead just make things so perfectly," he said. Putman became fascinated by the possibilities of machines that are "atomically precise." It wasn't until the recent AI boom, however, that the idea really took off with fabrication plants. Putman, now 50, is the CEO of Brooklyn-based Nanotronics, which he cofounded with his father in 2010. The company started out building microscopes and tools to detect defects in semiconductors, among other materials. Now, it builds small, modular semiconductor manufacturing plants called Cubefabs. While the biggest fabs in the country are often millions of square feet in size, Cubefabs measure anywhere from 25,000 square feet for the smallest units up to about 60,000 square feet for a full-sized fab. They're adaptable, and the company says they can be assembled in under a year in most places on Earth. They're also smart — thanks to the power of AI — so they can self-monitor their production and improve in real time, the company said. And they're relatively cheap, costing a minimum of $30 to $40 million, compared to large fabs that can cost billions to build. With President Donald Trump back in the White House and pledging to reinvigorate US manufacturing, a new opening has emerged for Nanotronics — even as sweeping tariffs challenge companies that produce or depend on semiconductors. Putman says that in the long term, the tariffs will bolster domestic innovation. Tariffs "should be a wake-up call — a push to create something better than what either the US or China has done before," he told BI in a video interview from the Nanotronics headquarters in Brooklyn Navy Yard. "If we get this right, American innovation won't just protect our future — it could help redefine global progress in a way that benefits humanity." Putman says compact, modular factories are exactly that. "Your factory should be incredibly small," Putman said, gesturing to the room behind him. "Eventually, it could be the size of this room." The 'Ikea of factories' Semiconductor manufacturing has surged since the launch of ChatGPT. Global annual revenue for the industry is expected to reach more than $1 trillion by 2030, according to McKinsey & Company. In the US, despite legislation subsidizing domestic semiconductor production, fabs are more expensive to construct and maintain than those built in places like mainland China and Taiwan, McKinsey says. The US also suffers from a shortage of qualified labor, which can delay construction timelines, according to the firm. To attempt to solve some of these issues, Nanotronics teamed up with architecture firm Rogers Partners and engineering firm Arup to design compact factories. Each one runs with 37 people, but Putman says the ideal setup is four factories — about 180 workers total — which allows them to scale up without halting production. "It's like the Ikea of factories," Putman said. The company has raised $182 million to date from firms including Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. Cubefabs can be used to produce chips that span a range of uses across electronics applications, electric vehicles, and photodetectors for cube satellites, Putman said. "The more precise we make things, the more abundance we bring to the world," he said. "The business of making things grow bigger and bigger starts small — molecular small." Building on the foundational research of scientist Philippe Bove — now chief scientist at Nanotronics — the company also uses gallium oxide — a type of semiconductor that can handle more power than traditional materials like silicon — to produce advanced chips. The company plans to have its first installation set up in New York within the next 18 months. "These fabs do not require billions in capital expenditure or large populations of highly trained workers," Putman told BI in a follow-up email. "The vision is that any region — whether in the Global South or the United States — should be able to produce what it needs locally."

That worked... until it didn't," she said. Things "unraveled" after her daughter was born, after a traumatic start which involved the NICU along with general postpartum recovery and everything else that comes with becoming a parent to a newborn. Each day, the bot would suggest one challenge for Allan to save or earn money, from cancelling one subscription, selling items on Facebook Marketplace, filing for any unclaimed money, and even searching for coins in old purses and between couch cushions—which earned Allan over $100. A major win for Allan was the bot suggesting she look through every app and account—and between a brokerage account she wasn't aware she had, and finance apps such as Venmo, Allan discovered more than $10,000. I've essentially paid half of my debt off," she told the camera, revealing one aspect of the challenge was to create a meal plan for the rest of the month based only on the food she had in her pantry. She had saved almost $600 in a month, having previously spent around $800 a month on groceries. TikTok users had a big reaction, one calling it "so impressive," and another writing: "I might need to do this as a single mom, that would be life changing money in savings." Allan is now planning to take up another challenge, this time changing the prompt to pay off the remainder in 30 days. "It wasn't some big financial hack," Allan told Newsweek. "It was the act of facing it every day—of tracking it, talking about it, looking at it every day. I stopped being afraid of my numbers. I built a debt tracker. "I started sharing my journey publicly. And for the first time in my life, I didn't feel ashamed. I felt empowered, like I could conquer anything." I Flew to London to Donate My Bone Marrow, Then I Discovered Who It Was For

Years after signing up to be a bone marrow donor, this woman was finally matched with a transplant patient—and she couldn't believe who it was for. Back in 2017, Mya Linklater signed up to the Anthony Nolan register, a charity that was set up in 1974 by Shirley Nolan to create the world's first stem cell register. As of 2024, they had over 909,000 potential donors who can be called upon to donate their bone marrow or blood stem cells for lifesaving transplants. Eight years after signing up, Linklater, 24, was stunned when she received an email in May 2025 to notifying her that she was a potential match for a patient on the list. Having been on the register for so long, Linklater, of Aberdeen, Scotland, wondered if she'd ever actually need to help. But when she finally got the opportunity, she told Newsweek that she felt "really excited" to save a life. "I filled in a medical update form and then a medical examiner came to my house to collect a blood sample to ensure that I was the perfect donor," Linklater said. She was curious to find out more about the patient she was donating for, and that's when she learned that it was for a young baby with leukemia. Learning that made the process even more rewarding, as she could give this baby a shot at a fulfilling life. Soon after, she was on a 2-hour flight from Scotland to London for a preliminary medical appointment before proceeding with the all-important surgery in June. "It's a surgical procedure done under general anesthetic where doctors extract liquid marrow containing stem cells from the back of your pelvic bone, using a needle and syringe," Linklater told Newsweek. Bone marrow donation is used to obtain blood-forming cells (stem cells) to help someone with blood cancer or a blood disorder. Bone marrow is the liquid tissue in the center of certain bones, and it makes more than 200 billion new blood cells every day, according to The Cleveland Clinic. Unfortunately, approximately 18,000 people are told every year that they have a bone marrow disease which requires a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. While 30 percent of people in need of a donor can find a match within their immediate family, 70 percent of patients need donors from a register. People in the U.S. can register for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) by attending a donor center or requesting an at-home test kit. Not everyone can be a donor, as certain conditions (such as HIV, cancer, diabetes and heart disease) will disqualify people, and being over the age of 60. While millions of people around the world are registered donors, there is still an overwhelming shortage. That's why Linklater decided to document the entire process to raise awareness and encourage others in the U.K. to join the Anthony Nolan register too. She then shared the video on her TikTok account (@myalinklater) in June, and it's gone viral with over 733,00 views and more than 112,600 likes at the time of writing. "The online response has been absolutely crazy. I have been inundated with kind and warm messages, and so many people love that I shared my story and have now joined the register themselves," Linklater continued. This has led to more than 2,500 comments on the viral post so far. To her delight, many people said they joined the register as a result of her video.
