Gujarat: Death toll in Gambhira bridge collapse rises to 18, two still missing
Speaking to reporters, Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya said that the rescue and recovery operation is still going on to find the two missing people and remove the debris from the incident spot.
A section of the Gambhira bridge connecting Vadodara and Anand collapsed on July 9 and fell into the Mahisagar river below.
The official noted that the five victims of the incident are undergoing treatment in the hospital and are in stable condition.
Dhameliya said, "...Rescue and recovery operation is going on. Day before yesterday, we recovered 12 bodies, and yesterday, we recovered 6 dead bodies. 5 live victims are undergoing treatment and are stable. The remaining dead bodies are trapped under a slab and efforts are underway to recover them. The driver of the truck which is trapped is also missing, we are trying to find his body. In the middle of the river, there is a 3-4 metre layer of quicksand..."
"Soda ash is being released into the water, which is causing irritation and itching to the rescue team... Our team is working after neutralising it. A tanker of sulphuric acid is trapped inside, so we are making sure it does not get released. The basic objective of today's operation is to retrieve the dead bodies and remove the debris... The death toll stands at 18, and 2 people are still missing..." he stated.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered a high-level inquiry into the recent bridge collapse on the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge connecting Vadodara and Anand.
The Chief Minister has entrusted a team of experts to conduct a detailed investigation and prepare a report on the repairs, inspections, and quality checks carried out on the bridge.
According to the Department of Information, based on the preliminary investigation, four officers have been suspended with immediate effect. NM Naikwala (Executive Engineer), UC Patel (Deputy Executive Engineer), RT Patel (Deputy Executive Engineer) and JV Shah (Assistant Engineer) have been suspended with immediate effect.
The Chief Minister has also directed that thorough inspections be carried out on other bridges in the state to ensure public safety.

India is in "touch with some friendly governments" over Nimisha Priya case
New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs made comprehensive remarks on the Nimisha Priya case during the weekly press briefing here on Thursday. The 37-year-old nurse from Kerala was set to be executed on July 16 after a trial court in Yemen convicted her of killing a Yemeni national, a decision that the country's Supreme Judicial Council upheld in November 2023. Speaking to reporters on the case, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the various steps which the Government of India has taken to provide support to the family. This includes legal assistance, regular consular visits by family and also the Indian government being in touch with governments on this case. Jaiswal said, "On the Nimisha Priya case, this is a very sensitive matter and the government of India has been offering all possible assistance in the case. We have provided legal assistance and also appointed a lawyer to assist the family. We have also arranged for regular consular visits by her family and we are also in touch with the local authorities, as also the family members to resolve this issue. This included concerted efforts in the recent few days to seek more time for the family of Ms Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party. The local authorities in Yemen have postponed the carrying out her sentence that was scheduled for July 16. We continue to closely follow the matter and render all possible assistance in the case. We are also in touch with some friendly governments in this regard." When asked about the role of the Grand Mufti in urging for the postponement of Nimisha Priya's sentence, the MEA Spokesperson said, "As for the role of the entity that you have mentioned, I have no information to share on this account." The remarks by MEA come after the Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad Kanthapuram said on Tuesday that he spoke to scholars in Yemen to urge them for the release of 37-year-old Nimish Priya, convicted of murder and set to be executed. The Grand Mufti claims that after his talks, the news of the execution being postponed also came in. "In Islam, instead of killing, there is also a practice of giving Diya (compensation). I requested them to accept Diyaat as the party is ready here for it. There are talks going on about whether my request has to be accepted. The date of execution was tomorrow, but it has now been postponed for some days," the Grand Mufti told ANI. The Grand Mufti had said that he is not considering the religion of Priya, but rather her humanity as he requested for her release. The Mufti's remarks had come after sources told ANI earlier that the execution of the 37-year-old nurse from Kerala was postponed following the "concerted efforts" by the Government of India. The execution was earlier set to happen on July 16. According to the sources, the postponement provides additional time for her family to negotiate a mutually agreeable solution amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts by Indian officials as they maintained regular communication with Yemeni jail authorities and the prosecutor's office while navigating the sensitivities of the situation to secure this reprieve. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday expressed relief and optimism over the postponement of the execution of Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse sentenced to death in Yemen. He described the development as "comforting and hopeful," noting that it provides additional time to secure the termination of her sentence. Vijayan acknowledged the persistent efforts and intervention of Kanthapuram AP Abubacker Musliyar and others, including the Action Council, who have been working tirelessly to seek justice for Nimisha Priya.

Iraq: At least 61 dead, several missing after massive fire at hypermarket in Kut city
Baghdad: A massive fire in a five-storey commercial complex in Kut city, eastern Iraq, has left at least 61 people dead and several others missing, according to the country's Interior Ministry, Al Jazeera reported. The fire broke out late Wednesday night in a building that had opened just a week ago. It housed a hypermarket, a restaurant, and other shops. According to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry on Thursday, civil defence teams recovered 14 charred bodies and rescued at least 45 people. "We have compiled a list of 59 victims whose identities have been confirmed, but one body was so badly burned that it has been extremely difficult to identify," a local health official told Al Jazeera, quoting Reuters. Wasit province Governor Mohammed al-Mayahi confirmed that the fire began inside both the hypermarket and a nearby restaurant. He said many families were inside the complex, dining and shopping, when the flames spread quickly. "A tragedy and a calamity have befallen us," Al-Mayahi said, adding that firefighters managed to rescue several people before putting out the fire. Videos shared on social media showed flames engulfing the tall building as emergency teams worked to control the blaze and reach those trapped inside. Al Jazeera, citing Iraqi News Agency (INA), reported that lawsuits have been filed against the owner of the building and the mall. The governor has ordered a full investigation and promised that the findings will be made public within 48 hours.

Theft, assault in US may lead to revocation of visas: Embassy states
New Delhi : The US Embassy in India has issued a warning stating that committing an assault, theft, or burglary in the United States will result in the revocation of a person's visa. The warning further stated that such an act could also prevent the person from entering the US again. In a post on X, the Embassy said, "Committing assault, theft, or burglary in the United States won't just cause you legal issues - it could lead to your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future U.S. visas. The United States values law and order and expects foreign visitors to follow all U.S. laws." This move comes as US President Donald Trump is on a quest to deport illegal immigrants and other criminals from the US. As per the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, 1,42,000 people were deported from the US between 20 January and 29 April. According to the official website for US federal legislative information, stealing property likely violates numerous state laws that criminalise theft in various forms, and, depending on the circumstances, it may also run afoul of federal criminal law. The US Code uses terms like larceny, embezzlement, robbery, and burglary in the titles of code chapters or statutory sections. According to the US Department of Justice, in all but a few States, the right of a merchant to approach and detain a suspected shoplifter is addressed in the event of an incident of shoplifting. In several states, the owners of stolen merchandise are granted a civil right of action against the shoplifter. Many States classify shoplifting as a misdemeanour or felony according to the value of the property taken. Fines and maximum sentences also vary greatly from State to State.
