Liverpool's secret WEAPON in unlocking deals for Isak and Gordon

Yahoo21-06-2025

Liverpool's summer transfer plans could end up being seriously entwined with those of Newcastle United. First off, the Reds are known to be interested in Alexander Isak.
The 25-year-old forward hit 23 goals for the Magpies in the Premier League last season. That helped propel the North East club back to the Champions League and establish Isak as one of the finest strikers around.

He is in many ways the dream forward for Arne Slot but it is not going to be easy to arrange a transfer. Newcastle would want over £120m for the Swede, who is out of contract in 2028.
And Liverpool have also got their eye on the £75m-rated winger Anthony Gordon.
The club were close to doing a deal for the England international last summer but the move hit a last-minute hitch owing to Newcastle requesting Jarell Quansah to be part of the deal.
Liverpool looking at Newcastle for Isak and Gordon
24-year-old Gordon is well-known to several Liverpool squad members from England duty and last summer was reported to be keen on a return to Merseyside. And Newcastle have got a few Liverpool players in their sights.

It will be too late to add Quansah - with the defender now close to Bayer Leverkusen - but there are others in the squad they have been looking at.
Diogo Jota is now reported to be of interest to the Geordies, with the Reds willing to cash in on their Portuguese talisman.
Harvey Elliott's name has come up, meanwhile, as a potential Magpies target. Then there's Joe Gomez. The long-serving defender could be available for the right price this summer and if the right offer appeals to him.
But Newcastle are in some off-field turmoil currently, which could make negotiations difficult. Paul Mitchell has just stood down from his post as sporting director, according to a new report in the Daily Mail.

The club are now setting about interviewing various candidates for the prestigious role and there is a very familiar name among the potential appointments.

Julian Ward on Newcastle's wishlist
'Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell has stood down from his sporting director role with immediate effect - and Andy Howe has been asked to step up to work alongside head of recruitment Steve Nickson,' a report reads.
'Nottingham Forest chief Ross Wilson is among the candidates and former Arsenal assistant sporting director Jason Ayto will be spoken to by Nolan [recruiters]. We can also reveal that Julian Ward, Liverpool's technical director, is another name in the frame.'

Julian Ward first joined Liverpool back in 2012 after leaving Manchester City. He became European scouting manager for Spain and Portugal before a promotion to loan pathways and partnership manager.
He was anointed as assistant sporting director to Michael Edwards in 2020 before taking on the sporting director role in 2022.
Ward walked away from the club a year later but was convinced to return as technical director when Edwards rejoined FSG as CEO of Football. He now has a broad remit across FSG, including player development as well as the academy and loans.

Two York City related fathers celebrate sons' England under-21's European glory

England under-21's won the European Championship on Saturday, featuring Jack Hinshelwood and Charlie Cresswell. (Image: PA) ENGLAND under-21's are European Champions - which has brought much pride to two York City related fathers. York manager Adam Hinshelwood and former player Richard Cresswell watched on as their sons, Jack Hinshelwood and Charlie Cresswell, started and played 120 minutes in a 3-2 victory over Germany. Advertisement England, under the management of Lee Carsley, had finished second in Group B after defeating Czech Republic under-21's 3-1 on the opening day, drawing 0-0 with Slovenia under-21's, and a rare 2-1 defeat at the hands of eventual runners-up Germany. That brought a quarter-final tie with Spain under-21's, where goals from James McAtee, Harvey Elliott and Elliot Anderson ended with a 3-1 win. A narrow semi-final clash with the Netherlands under-21's followed, but an Elliott brace sent the Three Lions deservedly into the final in Slovakia. Germany were their opponents on Saturday night, where England had a fantastic start, going 2-0 up after 24 minutes thanks to strikes by Elliott and Omari Hutchinso. Advertisement Goals from Germany's Nelson Weiper and Paul Nebel brought the game level, which is how it would remain until the end of the 90 minutes. Jonathan Rowe was introduced for extra-time, and made an immediate impact when his diving header beat goalkeeper Noah Atubolu - gifting England European glory. Jack Hinshelwood started the contest at right-back, playing the entirety of the match and looked comfortable with his father, York manager Adam, seen in the stands. Jack has made 26 appearances in the Premier League for Brighton & Hove Albion, scoring five times and assisting twice. York-raised Charlie Cresswell is the son of former City icon Richard, with his father making 106 appearances for the Minstermen, including one match as interim manager in 2015. Advertisement He would also go on to play for local side Tadcaster Albion, whilst his son, Charlie, came through the ranks at Leeds United's academy. Charlie now plays his football in the top tier of France, having accumulated 31 appearances, three goals and one assist for Toulouse. Josh Thewlis on his spectacular try, gaining confidence and key defensive play

Josh Thewlis touches down for the opening try against Hull FC after breaking from deep inside his own half (Image: Paul Currie/ WARRINGTON Wolves needed a good start against Hull FC, and Josh Thewlis provided it in spectacular fashion. With The Wire tasked with coming off their own line early in the game, the winger – back in his regular position after two games at full-back – burst through the Black and Whites defence and streaked home from almost the full length of the field. Advertisement From there, his side never looked back and secured a victory that keeps them alive in the play-off race, when defeat would have all but ended their hopes. 'It was just a yardage carry, I got my nose through and away I went,' the older Thewlis brother told the Warrington Guardian post-match as he completed another game alongside younger sibling Jake, who was on the opposite wing. 'We've been working hard lately and sticking to process and it showed today. 'It was a pretty easy switch – we do two or three training sessions a week so it was just picking up my job again. I spoke to Sam (Burgess) and it's a case of wherever the team needs me. Advertisement 'It was good going back to full-back – you see the game a lot differently – but it's good to be back on the right edge and building some connections with Rod (Tai) and George (Williams).' On the victory, he added: 'We did need it. Closing that gap between us and the six is definitely something we spoke about this week. 'It was either going to be seven points after today or three, and we've made it three so we're back in touch. Hopefully we can charge now for the rest of the season. 'It's been tough recently – we've been putting a lot of effort into games without coming away with points and wins. 'The players have been frustrated more than anyone – I get fans are frustrated as well – but it's good to see us get the benefits out of our hard work. Advertisement 'I think we can gain a lot of confidence from that.' Thewlis the younger joined his brother on the scoresheet shortly afterwards as Warrington struck out into a 12-0 lead, but a nervy second half appeared to be in store after the visitors narrowed the gap to two points with a surge late in the opening period. However, The Wire nailed their start again after the break and back-to-back tries from Sam Powell and Lachlan Fitzgibbon stretched them out to an unassailable lead. 'We spoke about our start all week – Hull have got a good starting pack that come hard with Herman Ese'ese leading it,' Thewlis said. Advertisement 'Our three middles got after it this week and we got a 12-0 start. 'They pegged us back with some unanswered points but in the second half, our emphasis was on going hard again and I think we delivered on both of them.' Warrington kept Hull pretty much at arm's length for the rest of the game, but there was time for a scare when Lewis Martin crossed on Thewlis' right edge. However, video referee Jack Smith chalked the try off after replays showed centre partner Rodrick Tai had done enough to force Martin into touch before he grounded the ball. 'We spoke about moments and winning more of them,' Thewlis said. Advertisement 'Our system works but it's about making one-on-ones and Rod getting around and making that kind of tackle is part of our system. 'It was a massive effort – the game could have been in the swing there but that popped their bubble a bit.'

Photo byThe 18-year-old was introduced at the start of extra-time with the final level at 2-2. Moments later, Jonathan Rowe headed in Tyler Morton's cross to secure the title for Lee Carsley's side. Nwaneri replaced James McAtee and played the entire additional period, helping England close out the tense match. Advertisement Harvey Elliott and former Arsenal youngster, Omari Hutchinson, had given England a commanding first-half lead before goals from Nelson Weiper and Paul Nebel forced extra-time. Germany struck the crossbar twice in the final stages, but England held on. Nwaneri featured in all six of England's matches during the tournament, starting twice. His most significant involvements came in the group stage defeat to Germany and the goalless draw with Slovenia, where he played over an hour in each.
