'I put Poundland's £1 milky toner promising 'glass skin' to the test against a £15 K-beauty buy'
Milky textures in skincare have become a trend this year, with hydrating serums, toners, and micellar waters popping up everywhere. Having already tried out a few formulas, including BYOMA's Hydrating Milky Toner, £11.99, Curel's Moisture Facial Milk, £20, and Beauty of Joseon's Glow Replenishing Rice Milk, £15.50, I love the glow they give and how much they moisturise the skin, especially when prepping it for make-up.
Even Hailey Bieber swears by a drop of her rhode Glazing Milk mixed into foundation for the ultimate dewy look.
However, retailing usually between £10 - £30, they can be a pretty pricey addition to your skincare routine, especially if you are opting for higher-end ones like rhode, Tatcha or Curel.
Luckily for us, Poundland launched its Body Stories collection at the end of last year, a range focusing on affordable, effective, and everyday skincare essentials. Jumping on the milky formula trend, a Milky Micellar Water is included in the range and retails for only £1.
I decided to test out this affordable buy against Beauty of Joseon's Glow Replenishing Rice Milk, which is one of my current favourite products in my routine. They are, of course, slightly different in the sense that Poundland's is a micellar water, so it aims to remove make-up and impurities while providing a glowing base. However, I wanted to see if Poundland's glow could live up to a pricier purchase.
Poundland Body Stories Milky Micellar Water review
Pros
Fragrance free, gentle and great for sensitive skin, great price
Cons
Not as glowy as other milky products, doesn't remove make-up as easily as other micellar waters
Upon first use, I was really impressed with the thick consistency of the micellar water. I prefer a richer formula with these types of products. I was a little conscious that this would leave too much of a glow, one that borders on shiny, but was pleasantly surprised to see this was not the case.
Infused with ceramides and watermelon extract, this formula injects a boost of hydration into your skin immediately after use, which you can immediately see on the skin.
Plus, being fragrance-free gets some brownie points from me. My skin can be pretty sensitive to added scents or harsh ingredients, but this soothing, moisturising formula didn't cause me any issues. And I was sceptical considering the price is so low.
My main criticism was that the results were just not quite as glowy or as much of a long-lasting glow as I would like. Or compared to other milky products, such as Beauty of Joseon's Rice Milk. However, if you prefer a more subtle radiance, this will work well for you.
Considering the £1 price tag on this Poundland buy, I would absolutely purchase it again. It may not have provided super long-lasting hydration and radiance compared to other pricier buys, but it worked as a fantastic base under make-up for that 'lit-from-within' look.
It's currently not available to shop online but is available in your local Poundland store.
Beauty of Joseon Glow Replenishing Rice Milk review
Pros
Ideal for oily skin, gives that "glass skin" effect, radiant rather than shiny
Cons
Very watery consistency
I'm already an avid user of milky toners, so it was unsurprising that I enjoyed using Beauty of Joseon's one so much. However, what cemented this one in particular as my new go-to is how well it works for oily skin.
Other milky toners can sometimes lean on the side of shiny, rather than radiant, but that wasn't the case with this rice milk.
Not to mention, I got literally stopped in the street and complimented on my "glass skin", which hasn't happened to me with the other milky toners I've used.
It definitely gives that luminous, "I drink three litres of water a day" glow, and because it's infused with rice extract and rice amino acids, it actually feeds your skin with a whole load of vitamins and antioxidants.
My only criticism is that I would prefer the consistency were slightly thicker; it is far more watery than other milky toners I've used in the past, and that leads me to pouring out a bit too much product every time I use it.
Overall, however, I think it's the perfect glowy but not greasy base for under makeup or those makeup-free days when you want your skin to do all the talking.

From 'glazed donut' nails to 'cinnamon cookie butter hair' (yes, really), the influence she has on the beauty industry is undeniable. In a recent video that amassed 8.8 million views, the model and entrepreneur shared her summer makeup routine, in which she was spotted using Morphe's ChromaPlus Outer Spice Palette - and now you can pick it up yourself for just £16. Featuring six rich, warm shades from cinnamon to burnt orange, this palette creates effortlessly smouldering looks that work from day to night. In fact, beauty fans have called it the 'ultimate little palette' for adding a pop of warmth and drama without the fuss. £16 Shop Combining six ultra-pigmented shades, the palette blends both timeless and trending shades for everyday or bold makeup looks - and customers are as obsessed as Hailey. 'This is a great on-the-go palette if you want a soft glow,' said one shopper. 'It's great for a daytime look, but even better for a night out. For a bold look, wetting your brush does give it that strong shadow you may like. The colours are amazing!'. 'I've been loving this! The pigmentation is super rich, and it shows up beautifully with just one swipe,' said a second customer. 'It's also incredibly easy to blend, which makes creating different looks so effortless. Whether I'm going for something bold or more natural, this palette delivers every time. Definitely a go-to in my makeup routine now!'. 'There is no way to truly express how beautiful this palette is just through a review,' said a third shopper. 'I already liked Morphe, but wasn't a super fan so I really was unbiased when using it. First, the colours are stunning. Perfect for summer! It swatches so smoothly and blends impeccably. Lasted without setting spray for about eight hours'. The latest in a flurry of incredible new launches from the brand, the ChromaPlus palettes come in six colour ways - though OuterSpice is perhaps the most wearable for day-to-day use. The palette combines two neutral matte shades, as well as one shimmery pink and one shimmery chocolate brown shade, and two otherworldly metallics. In Hailey's video, she combines her signature glowy complexion routine with a swipe of shimmer on her eyelids, using a primer underneath for longer wear. She finishes her look with faux freckles, and, of course, her signature Rhode lip products. Created with a brand-new formula that delivers all-day, creaseproof wear, each shade boasts a buttery-soft texture that makes blending a dream. For the best results, the brand recommends applying matte shades with a fluffy blending brush for a seamlessly diffused effect. For a more precise application, use a smaller detail brush - this is particularly effective when using the Dash of Cocoa shade as a liner or to define the lash line. To create depth, blend in darker shades to the crease of your eyelid with a medium-sized brush, before pressing in shimmer or metallic shades to your eyelid with your fingertip or using a flat packer brush. Top tip - for an ultra high-impact finish, wet your brush before going in with the metallic shades for a more intense colour payoff and incredible vibrancy. Ready to follow in the footsteps of Mrs Bieber? Buy the palette for £16 here - though if you want it, you'll have to be quick - as it's already sold out elsewhere. Run, don't walk!

‘I tried five Korean sunscreens on holiday and this £15 one came out on top'
K-beauty is having a real moment, and it's now easy buy here in the UK. I tried out five lightweight Korean face SPFs, available on the high street – here's how they performed As a beauty editor, even when I'm on holiday I'm never completely off-duty, as I'm always bringing new products with me to test while I'm away. And a recent trip to Spain proved to be no exception, as I used the hot weather to test out five new K-beauty face SPFs that had caught my eye recently – and they're all under £16 and easily available to buy here in the UK. Korean beauty formulas are known for being especially hydrating with a dewy finish, yet incredibly lightweight. This makes them ideal for laying up and for use in summer, when applying heavy cream in hot weather might not be that appealing. Here are the ones that impressed me the most... Best Korean beauty sunscreens tried and tested Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ Currently £12.40 from Lookfantastic (usual price £15.50) This and Beauty of Joseon's other facial sunscreen (see below) are perhaps the best known of the bunch here, having recently launched in Boots and Lookfantastic, and going viral on TikTok. It's a creamy lotion-type consistency but one that's very thin and quite runny, almost like a milk, and really lovely and soothing to apply. It sinks into the skin almost immediately yet still leaves a lightly hydrated feel and a very slight glow, and it may not have enough of a moisturising feel for dry skin types. The tube is also a bit messy to use. Another member of our team also loves this, saying, "I found that my skin felt so quenched that I didn't need to use a separate moisturiser, and it also sits really well underneath make-up, which can be a challenge to find with sunscreens." Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisture Airyfit Daily Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++ Currently £15.30 from Boots (usual price £17) Haruharu Wonder is one of the newest Korean beauty brands to land on my beauty desk, which calls itself "a minimalist K-beauty brand" that "blends gentle rituals with cutting-edge fermentation tech to support visible skin health over time". Airyfit Daily Sunscreen has more of a luxe look and feel than some of the others here, from the handy pump packaging to the elevated texture – nourishing yet absolutely non-greasy, with zero white cast. This one feels more like a nice moisturiser, and my skin would be happy if I skipped my usual face cream and just used this. It's my favourite out of the bunch. Green Tea Fresh Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++ Currently £15.99 from Stylevanna (usual price £19) I can tell that sunscreens are going to have a lot of appeal for younger shoppers (and that can only be a good ting) because of their cute circular bottles; granted, these don't stand up very well on your dressing table, and aren't very easy to squeeze once they're nearly empty, but they're easy to pack and fun to use. This one contains green tea and cica extracts to soothe sun-stressed skin, and leaves a refreshing feel and a nice glow to the skin. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-fresh Rice + B5 SPF50 PA++++ Currently £12.40 from Lookfantastic (usual price £15.50) This is Beauty of Joseon's other SPF 50, and the one that's perhaps better suited to oily or combination skin types. It is actually very similar in consistency to the Rice + Probiotics one, but has a bit more of a watery, more cooling feel, and leaves a slight 'drag' on the skin. It's not quite hydrating enough for my skin (I definitely need to apply it over the top of a moisturiser), but I can see it really appealing to anyone that hates the usual feel of sun cream – or even any skincare – on their face, or maybe with male shoppers. Aqua Glowing Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++ Currently £15.99 from Stylevanna (usual price £19.19) If it's natural-looking glow without greasiness that you're after, this is the one for you. It's very similar to Green Tea SPF above – and, actually, all of these – in that it's super lightweight and so easily absorbed, but with niacinamide and a ceramide, it gives more of a radiant finish, which I loved.
