1 Cyclist killed, 2 injured in car crash during Okanagan Granfondo
Penticton RCMP say the crash happened Sunday on White Lake Road near St. Andrew's Drive — a route that's part of the popular mass cycling event, which draws thousands of riders to the city each year.
Police say the incident involved a motor vehicle and multiple cyclists. One cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The road was closed as investigators analyzed the crash, and a traffic detour was put in place.
In a statement, Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield said the city is grieving with those affected.
"We are devastated by the news of this tragedy and our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected," he said. "On behalf of Council and our entire community, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and every individual who has been impacted."
"In times like these, words often fall short. It's a time to come together with compassion and kindness – and to show support for those in need."
The City of Penticton had issued a traffic advisory ahead of Sunday's event, warning drivers to expect delays throughout the region and to watch for cyclists along highway routes.
In a statement Sunday afternoon, organizers of the Okanagan Granfondo said they were "heartbroken" by the fatal incident.
"Our prayers are with all those impacted today," the statement read. "We are fully cooperating with the authorities at this time."

Police ID woman, 71, fatally stabbed in North York parking lot
Toronto police have identified a 71-year-old woman fatally stabbed in a North York parking lot on Thursday in what has been called an "unprovoked" attack. Shahnaz Pestonji, of Toronto, died in hospital, police said in a news release on Thursday. Police say she was attacked while loading groceries into her car. No arrests have been made, but police have released images of the suspect who fled the scene. Police said officers found the woman with stab wounds after they were called to the area of Parkway Forest Drive and Sheppard Avenue E. at around 9:35 a.m. Earlier on Thursday, Duty Insp. Phil Sinclair told reporters the incident was an "unprovoked" attack, judging from surveillance video. "We do understand this is a very deeply concerning incident. It happened during the daytime hours in a busy plaza when many patrons were out simply just shopping, getting their groceries," Sinclair said. Sinclair said the woman had come from a supermarket in the plaza. Pestonji is the city's 22nd homicide victim of the year. At the scene, a car was seen with its trunk open and evidence markers all around near Iqbal Foods, the only grocery store at the plaza. Police said they don't know if there was any relationship between the victim and the suspect. Sinclair told reporters that police believe there is no ongoing threat to the public. When asked how that's possible considering no suspect has been located, he said police are taking the situation seriously. "We do encourage you to be aware of your surroundings. We are treating this investigation with the utmost of seriousness," he said. Some residents fearful after stabbing But some residents are worried. Sruti Mohnty, who shops at the plaza weekly, said she was "freaked out" by the stabbing. Mohnty said she walks her two dogs with her mom every day. "People are just going about their day and to think that someone can just come and kill you here, it's a bit scary," she said. "We should be living in a safe country," she said. "It makes me very sad to see anything happen to anyone living in the community." Nasrat Sarwary's family doctor is in the plaza. He said he's scared too. "This area was very, very safe area. And people are very nice here too," he said. "I'm totally surprised." Sarwary said it's especially shocking that the stabbing happened during the day time and in a busy plaza. Coun. Shelley Carroll, who represents Don Valley North, where the incident took place, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that community members should not hesitate to reach out if they need support. "I'm heartbroken to learn that a woman was killed outside of Iqbal Foods this morning," she said. "This is a devastating and senseless act of violence, and my thoughts are with her family, friends and everyone in the community who has been shaken by this tragedy." Sharp weapon used in attack, police say Sinclair said a sharp weapon was used in the attack, possibly a knife. The suspect is described as a male between five-foot-seven and five-foot-ten-inches tall, wearing all dark clothing and a balaclava at the time of the stabbing. Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Alouettes sign veteran lineman Shawn Lemon after reinstatement
MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes signed Shawn Lemon to a contract through the rest of the CFL season Thursday, one day after the veteran defensive lineman was reinstated from a gambling suspension. Lemon played in parts of the last two seasons with the Alouettes and helped Montreal win a Grey Cup in 2023. The 36-year-old was suspended indefinitely on April 24, 2024, for wagering on league games in 2021 while a member of the Calgary Stampeders, including one game in which he played. Following an appeal, an independent arbitrator upheld the suspension. His reinstatement comes with specific conditions. Any future violations of the league's match manipulation policy will result in a lifetime ban. Although Lemon can resume his career, he still needs to serve a two-game suspension under the league's drug policy after testing positive for the banned stimulant phentermine, which is prescribed as an appetite suppressant. The Alouettes announced his signing an hour before kickoff Thursday against the Toronto Argonauts. Lemon was seen exiting Montreal's Olympic Stadium wearing an Alouettes hat and backpack Wednesday. 'We're very happy to have Shawn back with us,' Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia said in a statement. 'With him, we're a better team. Shawn has taken care of his body throughout his career, he knows our system and most of our players, and we're confident he'll help us win games. This is a fresh start for him with us.' Suspended players can't participate in regular-season or post-season games. It is at the club's discretion whether to allow players to participate in other team activities, such as training camp, pre-season games, practices or meetings. The CFL's original suspension of Lemon came two weeks following his retirement after helping Montreal defeat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24 in the '23 Grey Cup. Lemon initially signed a one-year deal with the Alouettes in December 2023 to play a 14th CFL campaign. The league said at the time no evidence indicated games were impacted by Lemon's wagering and that Stampeders coaches, teammates and team personnel were unaware of his actions. Lemon appealed his suspension in May, which allowed him to report to Montreal's training camp and play with the CFL team. He helped the Alouettes open the '24 season with four straight wins before another arbitrator ruled July 4 to reinstate the league's original indefinite suspension. The six-foot-two, 242-pound Lemon is a three-time Grey champion who has recorded 262 tackles, two special-teams tackles and 102 sacks over his CFL career. The native of Charleston, S.C., began his pro career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as a practice-roster player in 2011 and has spent time with every CFL team, some on multiple occasions, except Hamilton. His other Grey Cup wins were with Calgary (2014) and Toronto (2017). This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 17, 2025. The Canadian Press
